Growing All of Our Fruit and Vegetables in the Forest: Amazing Transformation in 1 Year

  • Starting with a dense forest in March 2020, I clear 1/4 acre of trees and using native soil, leaves, natural compost and rotten logs, grow a huge amount of food for my family before winter hits in November.
Welcome to our homestead! Join us as we create a resilient, abundant and sustainable ecosystem that feeds our families from the land in Ontario Canada. Using permaculture as our guide, we strive to become independent in water, food, energy and shelter, focused on beauty in form and efficiency in function.
Our Self Reliance is a life of compromise between the women in my family and their preference for culture, comfort and formality, and I, with my love of chaotic and beautiful but challenging and often uncomfortable wilderness living.

Greetings from Finland. I find food production and preserving side of self reliance just as interesting as building and hunting/fishing. So I'm really happy to see this new sister channel which (I assume) will show more this side of things. In northernmost Finland some people were practically living self sustainable life still shortly after WW2 and all this is still in living memory. It was a combination of all these skills, even as food production was somewhat marginal due to the high latitude and cold climate.

Impressive progress in just one year! I first learned about hügelkultur from you it really helps keep the costs down when filling a garden bed and makes great soil! Have you always used it in your gardening before or was this (2020) the first year you tried it?

I remember most of this from when you were building the beds. I thought they did surprisingly well for a first year garden. I really enjoy learning about the how's and why's that your planting this or that. The hard part has always been that you don't tell us what things are. Different fruits and vegetables grow in different regions and planting zones and half of the time I have no idea what you are showing us. It may be that I've only seen a different shape or color but sometimes I have absolutely no idea what it is, what it tastes like. Hopefully you can either say what it is or add a name card to the video during editing.

During bug season for your chickens to eat bugs you could trap a bunch of bugs and collect them in buckets and they'll be your bug chicken feed? I don't know if that would help save some money on chicken feed. I was telling this other guy about a video I saw about ramming sticks in the ground and hitting them alot to make them vibrate and make worms come out of the ground like that. also making the ground wet while doing that may help them come out. I don't know if it works. I never tried it. I have put a large tarp on the ground though and tacked it flat to the ground on all corners and left it there over night and the next day when I took the tarp up there was all kinds of bugs and worms and snakes under it. That could be helpful.
