    My husband and I did an audit this year of how much we spent per year in all our categories- my clothes was about 1200 per year on average, which blew my mind. That is a good start to a vacation or a home improvement project. Or 1200 to get our mortgage paid off early! So I just decided to try to go a year without buying any clothing this year. I’ve made it to month 4 and so far so good! I’ve even had friends who didn’t know I was doing this give me a few pieces that they do not want any more that I loved and made me feel like I had some new variety.

    I call my capsule wardrobe my daily uniform 😮. Basic is jeans, leggings, t shirts, tank top and cardigan sweater. I dress in layers year around. There are items I never wear, shorts, capris or dresses. My go to dress up is black jeans, nice blouse. I started doing this wardrobe for about 5 years, took awhile to get it downsized and my rule is nothing is stored, accessibility is key to having what I want or need to wear at any time. I wear Birkenstocks, tennis shoes for walking and flip flops in house. I am now decluttering handbags, totes and purses down to a small selection. Jewelry is in one container (divided) necklaces hang on small rack! This took time but watching your channel encourages me to keep downsizing more and that is OK 👌🏻

      You must live in the North. My idea of layering is a bikini under short shorts and a tank top, LOL. 😂 In N FL it’s miserably hot and humid at least 6 months of the year so slacks are out for me. Calf length dresses, no stockings, when I go out, so I don’t pass out. Truly! A couple months a year I can wear long sleeves, slacks and sweaters. It was cold enough to wear my lightweight wool coat about five times this year. If I want to dress in winter clothes, I book a flight to New York to see my son. I would love a cooler climate and I’m trying to work towards that.

    In my season of life (retired, Granny to 2), my wardrobe is all about comfort! I've always been a Plain Jane and stick to black, gray, red & white...along with jeans in cooler months (I live in central Ohio) & shorts/capris in summer. Yes, I have a few dresses...and I love wearing dresses & do a lot in the summer...but my staple wardrobe is jeans and a nice t-shirt-style top most days. We moved 3 years ago & I got rid of at least 3/4 of my wardrobe, along with probably 2/3 of the 'stuff' in my house. I've missed NONE of it! So...I wear what I like & am comfortable in & it's always appropriate. I look nice whether in jeans & a nice top or a dress. I really don't care what others think!

    Sometimes trends come in and I hate them (looking at you, skinny jeans), but sometimes they come in and it feels so much like my style. I’m loving the wide leg jeans and trousers with belts and tucked in tops, so I’m trying to replenish my very very sparse closet with these items. I hope they’re timeless enough to last for a long while. I also realized I really don’t like patterned tops and like neutrals best, so I’m focusing on buying staples that I can wear on repeat and feel good on my body.

    Hearing you talk about 'your now body' a couple of years ago really helped me. As someone who changes size relatively frequently, I do have a drawer of my favourite pieces which don't currently fit but I'd like when I'm next at that size (both bigger or smaller!) but I use the container method to keep it at a manageable level. Otherwise most of my items are favourites BECAUSE they fit me at more sizes. I recommend youtube Leena Normz for how to identify what will work at multiple sizes - she talks about things like having more room at the armpit which is a game changer!

    For the past few years I've been pretty set on buying only good quality forever pieces, but with so much being online only and with the extra cost of such high quality, I did find that it was pretty tedious and challenging, especially for casual wear. I forget why I went ahead and walked into an Old Navy one day last summer, but I found that they have a line of shirts that are 100% and come in a variety of colors. They still aren't my perfectly ideal quality, but for the price it was pretty hard to argue with when at the time I so desperately needed just some simple everyday shirts! I did end up keeping one that wasn't as good a color for me as I thought, but two of the shirts I bought have become my absolute favorites! I'm learning more and more about myself (fabrics I prefer, colors I avoid, and cuts that suit me best) and so it's actually turned out to be a great place to test things out first before selecting those pricier pieces :)

    Something it’s really helped me gain confidence and comfort in my shopping and wardrobe is something I actually gleed from a comment on one of your clothing videos about three years ago, where someone recommended looking at “dress your truth“. That somehow pinged for me and I looked it up and it really gelled. It has helped me become much more aware of my own natural energy, a process of discovery and learning to love me for who I am and wearing things that express that energy quality in harmony.
    And a really cool side effect: then a “capsule wardrobe“ where things are interchangeable with ease comes pretty much as a matter of course! 😊

    What helped me the most with my closet was finding out about ‘dressing your truth’ - it completely removed the guilt of why something fits me and something doesnt! It’s a system that helps you understand your natural energy and how clothing corresponds to that 🥰

    • @bitrudder3792
      @bitrudder3792 Месяц назад +1

      I'm glad the system worked for you, I was personally typed by Ann Tuttle as a 4/1. probably the biggest waste of money because I purchased too many things in black and pure saturated color. Not a spendthrift but still. On the plus side, it got me examining details a lot more. The clarity of the color palette of those two types is just too harsh on me though. I think I got bossier as well, "Giving myself permission to be direct like a type four." 😂
      it's when I wear my summer colors, like I was originally typed a long time ago, that people tell me that I look radiant and glowing. I just happen to be a high contrast summer that often gets confused with a winter. Similar to a four, I do better in solids, but I can absolutely do without wearing a bold print or harsh stripes like a four. And I have a baby face still, and so I do like to incorporate Some aspects of type one, that gives a little lift without feeling too crisp. Usually some kind of movement detail at the helm of a tunic top, or wearing a necklace with tiny pieces of Seaglass in different shades of aqua and sea green. it gives a hint of warmth and clarity without going all the way there.
      I still have black in my wardrobe, it's useful enough for winter and easily accessible. But I'm definitely Planning to phase it out almost entirely (because my fuzzy black boots are going to probably last a really long time, and they were born to go with black leggings). I just wear a deep muted plum or navy top with it.

    • @jessicaray1418
      @jessicaray1418 Месяц назад +1

      I was typed a one also. I think I'm a 1/3 but I still think three colors look good on me the lighter ones I often think I'm 3/1

      @bitrudder3792 Месяц назад

      @@jessicaray1418 - it's interesting because they type off of the face and my personality, and they gave me two clear seasons (One cool and one warm) and those are just too startling on my coloring. You were typed with two warm seasons, and it sounds like you're finding the more muted Warm colors to be best on you, right? Very interesting. did you find that any other details made sense to you? Type one is very perky, animated, small print, dainty, lots of circles. Type three is heavier, more substantial, triangles, heavy textures. Other than the warmth the only thing they seem to have in common is that they are both good with busier print.

    Clothing continues to be my nemesis! These videos help, but man I have so far to go. The problem is mostly that I am unsatisfied with my body, so nothing looks great. I have discovered that spending time on my hair and makeup so that looks nice, gives way more confidence than clothing. It goes along with the smile. It is what people really look at and the clothing is secondary. I continue to be a work in progress.

      @@HoneyBee-pc3xi - it's very fun to do online quizzes, but the common thread whether I'm looking at fashion or decor quizzes, is that they don't give enough options. Once you've been around the block a little bit, you can see that they are trying to herd you into a set number of choices. But there are examples of types that I actually like or sometimes images of things I don't like. It's only because I've studied so many different types that I catch that. So it's really easy to go wrong if you don't know the intention behind the quizzes. But they're still fun!

    I've had good success getting rid of clothes that are uncomfortable, even if they fit and even if I like them, if they're itchy or the waist is weird or whatever then they have to go. But recently I have expanded that: I have some clothes that are comfortable most of the time, but every once in a while I put it on and I just can't stand it. I don't know the reason but this is a real thing for me. So I decided that I would also get rid of all the pieces of clothing that are uncomfortable sometimes (as opposed to the ones that are never comfortable lol).

      I love your successes! And I suppose you could save time and money in the future if you spent a little time thinking about what it was you couldn't stand about the outfits you got rid of. Make a note of it and see if those trends continue.
      I have spent a fair amount of time on "systems" that help you decide what colors to wear, what lines look best on my body type, what my "energy" style is. I don't actually recommend doing that because it can be a time suck, but it was informative. You are probably a faster learner than I was.
      but one thing really helped me a lot. When I was at the mall I took a couple of afternoons to just hold clothing up to myself and ask myself my own opinion about all the little details. Obviously, that I like how this color looked on me. One of my favorite questions as someone from a muted color palette was "do I notice the clothing first or I do I notice ME first when I look at myself with this in front of me?" If the garment was hogging all the attention, instead of bringing out my natural beauty, it was a thumbs down. It's helpful if you can figure out a good question to ask yourself like that, a question that is suitable for you and what you like and what feels right on you.
      On each trip I looked at slightly different things, like the level of light/dark contrast, did I like stripes that are bold or delicate or not at all, did I like polkadots, what size, did I like them in regimented rose or blobs or in tiny speckles like little stars sprinkled across the field? I asked myself if I liked the different florals, plans, and again I focused on the scale and the contrast and the color and the amount of negative space. When I held up eveningwear I asked myself if I liked the intense sparkle of sequins and Lamé or whether beaded things were nicer. Bouffant or sleek? Strapless or not? And I just talked into my phone all of my observations as quietly as possible so as not to look insane in a public place.😂
      I continued that a little bit when I was going through the things in my wardrobe.
      After a long way off I did it again and compared the two sets of notes.
      They were pretty much the same and now it really helps me to walk right past things in stores and not even bother with them. I know what I don't like. I can focus on what I do like.

    I have been working on reducing my wardrobe since I started watching your videos and am happy to say that EVERYTHING in my closet fits! I've come to realize that I need variety in my tops, so for me to be happy I can't have a truly minimalist wardrobe. When I really pared down I got tired of everything I owned really quickly. I have more tops now and am happier having choices but I always feel this tension between having too much and being tired of my clothes.

    I am hypersensitive to pressure, types of fabric, etc. I keep things simple with wide legged pants a basic top, and a duster. Sometimes the top is long sleeved, sometimes it's short sleeved, depending on the weather. Having these layers helps to keep me comfortable in our ever changing weather. One thing that I practice is a LOT of grace, because sometimes I will think that a color will work well for me, and it just doesn't and then it becomes a distraction. So I give myself permission to let the item go and like you I try to donate where I can.

    May l suggest you wear medium to light colors? They look beautiful on you!! Try warm tone light pastels. The light blue is fabulous too. Then choose shallow V necks, or boat necks. Stay away from crew necks and horizontal stripes. (Black seems to look too harsh for your caramel blonde coloring.) But your smile is terrific and supersedes everything you wear! 😍

    You do have a capsul wardrobe! Having one can mean that you don’t have to put a lot of energy into your cloths! All of your tops match all of your jeans so that is a capsul!! I have a very nice capsul wardrobe in our apartment in town. I put a lot of energy and time on it in late fall, winter and early spring. The rest of the time I have a leftover wardrobe in our house, that is tiny and I still can’t manage it. I garden most of the time or are out walking the dog. So I don’t put any time or erfors in to it. I just want cloths that can take a beating and funktion when I garden. What I want to say it doesn’t have to be the season of life. It can be different at different seasons within one year! ❤️

    I tend to wear jeans and a t shirt everyday. I will add a sweatshirt if its chilly, or wear a dress if its hot.I live in the UK, so dressing in layers is key for me. Dressing up is either a dress or smarter jeans and fancier t shirt. I lead a casual life, and don’t feel the need to impress or follow trends. I tend to buy thrift clothing, but stopped buying clothes the end of last year, as I have more than I need. I will be decluttering soon, as Im rearranging my wardrobe and drawers in time for summer. Im hoping with less choice it will give me more time and freedom.

    I saw a shorts or a reel last week somewhere, sorry can't remember but she was exchanging the cheapo and mismatched hangers for nice wooden hangers from Ikea..but she needed 36? 630? I'm old sorry...but it was mind blowing large number might as well been 1300 ;-) it wasn't but I think the bigger the closet the more one gathers. I don't have a built in closet ( it's not common in the Netherlands to have them) so I buy something like you have at Ikea a PAX or the like, a rack and full is full

      Wooden hangers are beautiful, but I rely on the very slim velvet textured hangers because it's so easy to dry things right out of the washing machine, or after a brief tumble, and just hang them in my wardrobe. They do look better, less cluttered than the white plastic ones I was using before and they stay on the hangers which is even better.
      Then my husband started stealing them. 😂
      i'm guilty of buying a lot more hangers because I'm still in the process of letting things go. But I'm sure I can find a loving home When I am done!

    Your question at the beginning about what is a capsule wardrobe got me thinking. I had never actually asked that question before. 😄 So I looked up the word "capsule" in Webster's 1828 Dictionary. This is his first definition for "capsule":
    "The seed vessel of a plant; a dry membranaceous hollow pericarp, opening differently in different plants..."
    So I guess a "capsule wardrobe" would be the seed form of a wardrobe: the simple essentials that contain and nurture us as we grow. 😊 I also like what he said about it "opening differently in different plants". In the same way, we are each uniquely designed by God and so our capsule wardrobes should be uniquely suited to each of us differently--tp support our own individual lives as we grow...🌱
    So thank you, Dawn, for your simple, fun question that sparked my very nerdy brain! I have a much better understanding of "capsule wardrobes" now! 😂🙌❤

They are expensive imo, so I try to wait for sales, but they are sustainably sourced and use mostly organic cotton. The clothes feel so good on my skin and they hold up well to repeated washings. For socks I like Darn Tough. They have a lifetime warranty so if your socks wear out you send them back and they send you a new pair. I only wear socks in winter but since you are in a cold state I thought I’d tell you about them. The merino wool fabric is great.

    At home it's all T shirts & capris or sweatpants. In public it's black pants & nice, button down work shirts.
    I don't wear jewelry at all anymore since it gets tangled in my hair, gets dirty (a lot of trips to the garden & feed store) or causes a breakout (nickel earrings).
    I have 2 pairs of dress shows, some cheap, foam flip flops for the house & a pair for outdoors & a couple pairs of running/hiking shoes.
    What stores need more of is non-plastic, airy, summer shirts that don't look like frumpy, granny clothes.

      🎯🎯🎯 I find jewelry a bit fussy for the most part and I've broken things when my Crossbody bag damaged necklaces. I will say that there are certain outfits where I like a nice elongating simple necklace but that's about it.
      🎯🎯🎯 I completely agree with you on the topic of attractive tops to wear in the summertime. All of my favorites are getting so worn out, for winter or for summer! But they don't look hard to make and I bought a couple of patterns and some light lovely fabric to make my own. It's hard enough finding fabric that isn't outright ugly on me. Finding a nice fabric in a shirt that I think is attractive like constructed is a whole other layer of difficulty.

    I've found that avoiding mistakes is easier with time. It's at least four years since I bought anything I didn't love and wear constantly. I've learned the hard way that however good something looks, if it doesn't feel right I won't wear it, so I never shop with anyone else as it's too easy to get pushed into buying something that looks great but that you don't feel comfortable in. I've also learned to ask if I'm buying this for my real self or my fantasy self! Mostly, I live in jeans, identical t-shirts in different colours and chunky jumpers. I have one skirt and top set and one dress for summer and the same for winter, for the rare occasions when I need to be a bit dressier. And I know that if it isn't made from cotton, linen, bamboo or wool, I won't wear it so there's no point buying it!

    A spin on having a solid resale shop to donate to. Buying at consignment shops has helped me find better quality clothing than I could afford or find new. I feel more empowered to experiment at that price point, see what works enough to hold on to and what I can let go (even if it fits & looks nice on me but I don’t end up feeling comfortable in all day long.) Routing nice clothing to my community college’s career center, the women’s center, or our local domestic violence shelter makes me feel good about my m̶i̶s̶t̶a̶k̶e̶s̶ learning experiences rather than feeling shame for wastefulness. It’s been a built-in grace grantor. ❤
    Also, this is how I learned that Börn shows ALWAYS fit me amazing in the more and fit the duration. I also learned Clark’s shoes don’t always, but quite frequently, fit me similarly.

    This isn’t everyone’s deal and I get it, but if you have any interest in sewing, the Brunch Blouse from Patterns for Pirates looks right up your alley. Sewing is how I broke out of the TJ Max cycle!
