Thank you. I was looking for this, especially the multibands
Great selection David!
Thank you for the video... please do a similar video for eq, saturation and reverb
Totally agree with your choice of 3 from Softube... TLA-100A is unbeatable!😎 and not only as a compressor...😈
These are great compressors for vocals. I need to get a few of them!!!
Neat. I had almost forgotten about the 1973 Drawmer. The 176 sounds very interesting. This is likely the most interesting compressor to put on my list to check out. It‘ll be a short while though. Just picked up a CL1B emulation/expansion by Kiive, which gave me very interesting action and harmonics. Less grabby than the Softube and more like the CL1B I heard 20 years ago when a friend of mine was recording R&B vocals with it. The Kiive KC-1 does really well on the voices I threw at it.
My favorites are a very limited bunch. I mostly do dialogue. Pro-C2, Uad 1176, Kiive KC-1.
Dude I love the Drawmer hardware, I have seven already. Really would love to add the 1973 to my setup ❤
Thank you David!
The Drawmer and the SMB are definitely going on my shopping list!
Bella's Goodbye is a great song!! I know I have already said this many times but could not help myself by saying it again!!!
Thank you!
This!
👌👌 she's amazing
My favorite too!
is it okay to roll off to 50hz of the bass when the kick is playing?
Excellent video. I usually use the UA 1176 Rev E or AE then LA2A combo but I'll have to try the 176 now...
You won't touch the 2A ever again
@@mixbustv What if I need extra compression after the 176? It's usually what happens on aggressive vocalists. I never compress more than 10db with the first compressor.
Gotta get those UAs while on sale!
Dave, Not to change the subject but what do you think about using mic/line pre-amps on your master bus for getting that transformer color such as Capi/API FD312 Heider H2?
I think we have dedicated color boxes for 2bus which are all a much better option. Leave the preamp for microphones
Hey David! Between the Audient iD14 Mk2 and the Ssl 2 which interface would you recommend for vocal recording and for mixing? Or recommend an alternative in their price range
Interface won't make any difference in your mixing unless you have analog (which I assume you don't because you won't have enough channels with those). I'd advise Motu M4
Trying the TLA-100a right now, this is sorcery.
David, what do you think about Softube Tube-Tech CL 1B? Thank you
It's the best CL1B emulation available, yet I feel their multiband is closer to the real deal than the 1B
Nice video from Musklor
If u only had the option to only get some 500 series pieces for mastering due to lack of money for rack versions what would you suggest? Are there 500 pieces good for mastering? Thanks
Sure they are, some of them. 542's and Wes Audio 500 series would be your best bet
What do you think of the Softube fet compressor mk2 versus the uad 1176 plugin?
It's rounder, not as snappy as the UA, still great 👍
15:23 How did you link those three threshold bands together? Thanks for all your helpful videos David.
I don't remember, it's muscle memory for me but it's either shift click or CTRL click
@@mixbustv just confirmed it’s shift + click. Thanks.
When you did a video like 3 months back on the Softube TubeTech Blue Tone I slept on that plugin. Then when I demo’d the plugin had to buy it right away especially since it was on sale for $69. I never thought no plugin company can do a better job of emulating hardware better than Acustica Audio but Softube defeats them this 1 time with Blue Tone beating Titanium 3 to my ears. Thank you for that video. I’m still going to buy the Warm Audio version of the Cb-1 though to compress whole tracking my vocals
Hi David, when we want to keep a strong body on our vocals how can we do that without making it muddy? For exemple, when using a cheap Mic inside an untreated room, that 250hz range gets boomy and taking some 3 to 4db with EQ solves my problem, but if I wanted to add a lil bit more body and chest tone to my vocal is there any good tech to use? Like maybe some saturation or upwards compression like an MV2 ?
Your best bet is either maxxbass (yes you read right, corner frequency high enough to hear it, then pull it back a bit) or Ozone exciter only the low mid band. With that said, you laid out the problem: cheap mic in a non treated room.. you can't fix that. If that's your situation get an sm7 and you won't have those issues
@@mixbustv Thanks a lot, when you say the "corner frequency" you mean the "Original Bass" frequency?
Great David! Im using Voca By sonnox… i have the Rockruepel and uad 175/176 and 1176
How do you like the Sonnox Voca ?
@@Studio22mix I like it a lot, It has an auto or optimized "vocal rider", then there is a with a very good compression combination, one more 1176 style and the other more La2, you can combine both, then there's Focus and Saturation and a Desser + Harshess reducer, here I rarely go above 25%, I prefer to use soothe2 for this effect, instead Regarding the plugin, it is quite intuitive, you can get to the objective quite quickly and effectively...
@@zanza_the_rewolverine thanks for sharing, I appreciate that 👍🏼
ive been using the SPL IRON on vocals lately. sounds incredible.
I think it's better on vocals than 2bus or mastering
@@mixbustv i'd tend to agree. really brought the vocal out in front for me lately. i ignored it but because i bought it, decided i'd try and was kind of wowed. maybe you should do a video on it to give people ideas.
Hello David,
Why you went for the Dangerous Music as your 2 channel AD converter?
Because it was the best after shooting it with others. Simple
@@mixbustv Thank you. If you get some time, would you please tell me which ones did you compared it with? Have you tried the Lynx Hilo?
You said that the drawmer is very musical, I never understood what it means when a comprsssor is musical or not. Can someone explain me the difference?
Everyone will have their own definition, that's why you neve understood. In the case of the 73 (and that's my definition here) it's three things: one, the crossovers don't give you the phase-y sound nor the dip/resonance that is very common with multiband anything. Two, the automatic release is very well designed and it's never "jerky" or nervous, it flows well with basically any material. And three, even if it's a FET compressor is quite warm and fuzzy.
Thank you These are definitely nice plugins. But there are many alternatives that can achieve a similar result. The only compressor for vocals that I have not found a replacement for is El Rey from Aсustiсa Audio.
We don't live in the "similar" world. Details are what makes the difference
I saw your video and many others pointing out that multiband compression causes phase shift, which is why I transitioned to dynamic EQ for the majority of my sidechain ducking uses. What are the best use cases for multiband compression where you avoid these negative side-effects?
Pro-MB in dynamic mode acts like a dynamic eq, it doesn't split the bands at the crossover points
Find one that sounds good. The filters in the crossovers are not all built the same. Also the main key is to set the xovers to your advantage...
Pro-MB does split the bands like any other MB, but in dynamic mode it only does it when it applies GR (upward or downward)
@@mixbustv I checked in plugin doctor and it doesn't split the bands in dynamic mode, only in minimum phase mode. Dynamic mode makes it a dynamic eq so it applies phase changes as typical dynamic eq plugin (like Pro-Q3 or TDR Nova) but you have the ability to set corner slopes of these shelves and bell filters any way you want
Dan Worrall mentioned in one of his videos that it was his idea to add that mode to Pro-MB exactly for this reason
🔥
solved.. if You know how the analog mixer work... I have here now some good results. -8 LUFS its easy now.. I can -5 LUFS, but no interpretation possible
Good that the Circle Audio 251 Comparision video was taken down . If you said the Evo was better than the Elam ; that would hurt your reputation as an Audio Guy . Circle Audio really need to revisit the Mic design to justify the hype . The Elam 251 was too good in comparison . The Evo 251 sounded so One Dimensional after hearing the Elam !!!
No, the reason is because we had an issue with the preamp. It wasn't my studio, I didn't hook the mics up, which originally were supposed to be tracked with my mt48 and the files did not represent the mic fairly. In fact not only we are going to reshoot it but there's an additional comparison available.
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
UVI Opal is the best La2A emulation in my opinion
Here am I using Pro-C2 for absolutely everything
This is the way ))) 🥷
Yeah, I have a rack of £££ hardware comps including a Urei 1176 Rev D and am finding myself using SSL X-Comp for almost everything these days
