I am a recovered Heroin Addict. Clean for 13 years. Enabling an addict in any way is what keeps us from stopping. I had to hit rock bottom. Lose everything and everyone. No money for drugs and it wasn’t easily accessible.
Once you hit a point like I was in. I had no choice but to seek help and start rebuilding my life.
In no way is enabling drug use doing anything but keeping them on it.

Yup. Harm reduction does make sense though. Unlaced weaker substances, shouldn't be as much of a main concern as rehabilitation and acces to it, mental health, prosecution of those who are commiting crimes like selling fentanyl. You shouldn't be able to do drugs in the street ,Portugal actually has a good system for it.

I run an SRO in Vancouver on Granville street. I got brought in here to clean it up after a machete incident. I have been here for about 2.5 years and it's finally gotten to where it should be. I have the safest, cleanest, and quietest SRO in Vancouver and it's all because I don't believe in Harm Reduction as it is right now. I believe that everyone has a right to a safe environment to live in and I won't budge on NOT renting to heavy addicts. If I think it's going to be a problem then it's not going to be here.
Solution: Consequences for actions: Hold people accountable for what they do... STOB ENABLING NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR: no where in history has enabling EVER helped anyone.

Thank God for you. There are literally no places for people to go if they don't do drugs. You can actually overdose from inhaling someone else's fentanyl and it's not safe to live in a building with people who are using drugs. There are no resources for people who are homeless but not on drugs. I think that's more sad than anything else down there. So I applaud you 👏

My mom was a nurse and believed that you could just pour more love and hugs on just about anything to heal it. When my sister, at age 15, left to live with a 22 yr old who was in the throes of alcohol misuse, they finally decided to say no to me. I had tickets to go to a Metallica concert. I was going to go with friends down to the states, at age 14, no parents, for sure lots of drugs. They said if I went, I would be kicked out of the house. While I was furious at the time, I look back and wonder if that one "no" changed the direction of my life drastically. I had been searching for a limit. I have never been able to even potty train a puppy without the word "no." Without it, it's confusing for the puppy and there is dog poop inside the house.

I'm from the US so am not familiar with an SRO. It sounds like dorm living, is that about right? Or like the housing Salvation Army and YMCA/YWCA used to have. It doesn't sound like a full on government housing where you have to take anyone. I managed a medium sized apartment complex near a University. I didn't discriminate but I told people that I was on site, most people want it quiet who live there, and it isn't just all students. That kept like 99% of any loud or somewhat troublesome tenants away. Sure, everyone wants to let loose once in a while but adults with schedules don't want to live in dangerous, noisy, dirty places in exchange for their payments.

    • @BobeBradlee
      @BobeBradlee 12 дней назад +3

Accountability is the solution in my opinion. I think we use blanket solutions to try to solve individual problems. We can't look at an addict and assume all addicts are the same. We can't say oh you need a safe way to do drugs and that's how we solve drug addiction. These safe injection sites help people keep poisoning themselves. End point. As you said an enabler is an enabler, no matter who or what they enabled. This stuff about the rodents who switched to chum when in a positive environment, tells me enough. The apartment lifestyle choices study was so important. Intensive 1 year treatment program, sounds like it would work. But the government says NO, we got our own plan that we are implementing, and you must burn and scrub your data. Just FN wow. Completely not shocked, but still wow.
We don't treat people. We mistreat people.

The woman interviewing me said that most if not all of these people are too far gone to change and that this system simply allows them to live a little longer but trying to help others become sober and free of the lifestyle is counterintuitive to the SRO's and harm reduction model which is in place.

I worked in law enforcement for a decade and some people ARE too far gone to help. We had maybe a dozen people amassing 100's of convictions for nuisance stuff like shoplifting, handling, being intoxicated in public as a danger to themselves or others. They'd be arrested, plead guilty 1st appearance, sentenced to a few months' sentence, released and repeat. They lead a chaotic lifestyle and didn't have the ability to keep appointments with counsellors, social workers or literate enough to access social welfare government supports. I'd spend 90% of my day dealing with these folks, who by and large, brains had turned to mush after decades of abusing intoxicants.
All they knew was drink and drugs. We used to have 'wet hostels' in the 80s that would allow them to stay off the streets, get a meal and drink in relative safety under the eye of care workers and doctors. They were shut down and these people were just thrown out to get lost in the streets and waste huge amounts of police/court/prison time with no hope of changing their ways. The wet hostels weren't pretty, but they at least gave those lost souls a bit of dignity. Pretending that every hardened addict can be changed is not reality.

You’re surrounded by dozens of other people who were also ready for change. Honestly rehab was a really great experience for me and it helped save my life. 2 years clean and sober, working full time, living in a nice little 2bdr apt with my also sober girlfriend whom I met in rehab. We’re both living completely different lives than we were a couple years ago. We do change we do recover. God I pray you please help that woman in the chair who wants to get married. As someone born and raised in Vancouver, the situation is a little more complex than people are brought to believe. One of the biggest contributing factors is a huge increase in the cost of living, a lack of affordable housing, and a decrease in access to work, are driving people to homelessness, and then to drugs out of desperation. Harm reduction is a bit of a double edged sword, it decreases the chances of transmission of diseases, and decreases the likelihood of laced drugs, but people who are too far gone abuse the system, and give it a bad name. It would be interesting to see you come back and assess the situation again in a few years

The depth of all these people is astounding. To see them speak so eloquently about their experience and in addition their opinions being so mature and educated. It adds a whole new level of visceral emotion. I wish I could hug each and every one of them. With proper steps put in place for access to rehab and recovery the method is possible. Look at other European countries that have done the same. It’s so sad that when we as a country attempt to make a change it’s half winded and ends up causing more harm. These people know why they use, they also know that based on their options it’s sometimes the only choice. My heart breaks for all of the vulnerable people that want to get clean and do better but may never have that chance or opportunity. As a Canadian I hope that in the coming years we can be proud of our contribution to bettering the lives of each and everyone one of these people.

Even when people are strong enough to get away from this, as soon as you go for medical help in a hospital for example, as soon as they see your history your often stigmatised by the staff. Treated terribly by " care" staff because you had a mental health crisis years ago. And it happens a lot. You also agree with that?

Her family and group of friends stuck together doing "harmless" drugs at first, making excuses for each other, figuring out ways to feel like victims and get free re$ources. I have watched her path through her life, and it is the enabling and excuses from the family, and now society that enabled and supported her downfall. STIGMA used to exist, and discouraged a lot of people from my generation from trying hard drugs. We were afraid of the consequences... Legal, health and social consequences of hard drugs. Life is hard for everyone. Why not give up and be coddled when things get hard? Why bother trying? What is wrong with Stigma?

It’s just sad… I’m from Alberta (Canada) and we lost my father in law about a year and a half ago to OD. These videos can be a hard watch sometimes. But I appreciate how raw and real they are and how kind you are to the people you speak to. My father in law died surrounded by naproxen kits that were useless, the fentanyl he was given was laced with something else that made it pretty much a guaranteed death :( he was so proud to be a grandpa and was always making us and our kids little trinkets and things to show us love. I could go on and on but I won’t clog up the comments 😅 we love and miss him very much though. And I know he hangs out with us. Im a stay at home mom and feel him with me a lot. Fun fact about him: He’s from the Vancouver area and He waterskied to the hospital the day my partner was born 😂

Vancouver has changed a lot and it’s a really scary place to be now due to addiction. I moved 30 minutes outside of downtown because I no longer felt safe walking my dog. The homeless and housing crisis has ruined a lot of peoples lives and our government doesn’t care, they now push MAID on people as a way of population control because it’s easier to kill people off than help with their mental health, addiction and housing. Vancouver BC is not the same city I knew it to be even 5 years ago. Our government has put more money into helping immigrants than it has helping the homeless drug epidemic. Unpopular opinion, but here goes: If it was fully legal, it would be sold by the government and TAXED, this is not the case. Instead they fucked up big time by not tackling the SUPPLY of the drugs. A lot of addicts would prefer to get actual heroin instead fent or even worse tranq. The government "could" facilitate this and at the same time wipe out the cartels and a lot of the crime that is associated with the drug use. But for some reason, they won't. What they're doing here is just idiotic and a goldmine for the cartels, get those addicts proper narcotics and they'll be able to get their shit together, let them rot on a dodgy supply and well, this is the result. That's just how I see it, I'm probably wrong, but until I've seen something convincing policy wise that actually works better then Switzerland, I'm going to keep that opinion.

@JoelTGM I did. I was never able to quit no matter what I tried. No rehab, no NA, not even moving to a completely different state where I didn't know anybody helped. I didn't fear jail because I had only ever been going for a month or two which was long enough to get over withdrawal but wasn't long enough to get over the mental aspect I guess because I went right back to using as soon as I got out. But then I did 7 and 1/2 months and I don't know if it was the length of time that made me never want to go back to jail or to using, whether it was fear of jail or whether that was just long enough for my mind to clean up I'm not entirely sure but that seemed to work. But my main point is for a lot of us it's really difficult to get to the point to where you want to quit so some of us need to be forced. It sucked at the time but it ended up saving my life

As a social worker against all these measures to allow people to use easily without consequences, i can tell you that those who are in favor of safe supply and making drugs use legal aren't in it to help people. They couldn't care less. They have a background in government institutions or other fields with no knowledge of how challenging living like this can be. They lack empathy and are only there to get as much funding from our governments as possible. I have colleagues and even managers who are exactly what I just mentioned. They simply do not care. Unfortunately, they tend to hold the positions of authority.

I remember as a kid back in the 80s, Ronald Reagan used to talk about fighting “the war on drugs“ and now look at it, you don’t hear anything about it and it’s 10 times worse than it was then, and much more dangerous.. it’s also crazy that if you see paper money on the street you could die from picking it up. I live in a small town in Alabama, you would never think fentanyl would make it here. My wife’s uncle bought some pills out of the hood and took one, he never woke up. Another kid at a high school eating a piece of candy,dead.. it’s horrible and a really good friend of mine, a couple months back, I got a phone call from my mom saying he had passed away and it was fentanyl..Something really needs to be done about it. They’re targeting everyone who has a few dollars. even our children, this is also why we need to control our borders..

This is the Tyler Oliveira style I fell in love with some years ago! This is raw, talented journalism, amazing editing and storytelling, and most of all, taking risks in conflict areas to tell a powerful story. Keep up the amazing work, Tyler! 👏👏👏
May I also remind you of the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions.
Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION! A shockingly sad truth. 🙁
In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return to rightful owners Native American people.
Notorious global cardinal crimes the Christian West has committed, and benefited a great deal, such as centuries-long global Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 🤷

When people say 'get clean,' it often comes with an unspoken question: 'Clean, but to live in what kind of life?' For many struggling with addiction, the prospect of sobriety isn't just about giving up substances; it's about facing a world that feels broken, harsh, and devoid of hope. If the alternative to the high is a life of misery, isolation, or continued struggle, then the choice to stay addicted might feel like the only way to escape the pain, even if only temporarily. The world has fallen hard for so many, and perhaps for some, the high becomes the only glimpse of peace or freedom they can find.

@@JosephThomas-t3n "I’m really sorry to hear what you’re going through. It sounds like you’re in a really tough spot, and I can’t imagine how overwhelming it must feel right now. I just want to say that even though things seem incredibly difficult, you’re not alone in this. Reaching out like you just did shows strength-it’s not easy to open up about struggles like these.
If it’s possible, I hope you can find someone or a local resource to help you with food stamps or even just a ride to get things sorted. Sometimes there are local food banks, shelters, or outreach programs that can step in during times like this. Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re weak-it means you’re doing what you can to keep moving forward.
And as far as the court goes, I hope it leads to something that brings you closer to some stability, not just another cycle. You deserve to have the support to turn things around, and even though I’m just a stranger, I truly believe you’re stronger than you might feel right now. Hang in there, and please don’t give up on yourself."
