    Hi OP, Another excellent review, you always brings us back to our childhood days with lots of memories and why we now love the Railways in real life and in model form. You are absolutely great to watch, you are so unique in the way you present the blog, even showing the Catalogue year of release and the price list they were in, when they released the item and then a great pickup and look all round the items in question, inside and out. Keep doing what you do Oscar and in the same way you present the blog. Alway a huge Thumbs Up 👍

    The coaches you were showing today are Hornby's 1st attempt at Gresley coaches. The ones they were replacing were there attempt at Thompson coaches! The othes on the same pages of the catalogue were Maunsell for SR, Period 3 for LMS and Collett for GWR, all inter war coaches to match the locos. They all had the same chassis and bogies, later, as you say, the Gresleys got Gresley bogies. They still make these coaches as part of their Railroad range and the main range has far more detail and accuracy, and little bits that can fall orff, especially the Gresleys! Great video, reminds me of when I was a kid with these trains. Keep it up. I await with anticipaion every week!

      Definitely all change on the coaches at this point David. I think they were all quite well received at the time. It's amazing that these teak coaches have lasted this amount of time and still in one of Hornby's ranges. Great to hear you enjoyed the video.

    Oscar, another thought provoking enjoyable video.
    About 25 years ago I converted some of these coaches to North West Shortline H0 scale 42inch wheels on pinpoint axles. In 00 scale this scales to 36.8 inches.
    These solid wheels gave very good running on my club layout. The sound of these wheels combined with their good running qualities, due to the NMRA standards and RP25 wheel profile, combined with the close coupling design drew many favourable comments from a usually picky audience of club members.
    Downside of these wheels was that I immediately wanted to convert all my coaches to these wheels.
    With these wheelsets being insulated on only one side it would be easy to arrange low friction wipers on each axle to arrange pickup for lighting. Wipers on the axle, such as some phosphor bronze wire, can have much less friction than the R449 Coach lighting unit or wheel back or tread wipers due to lower speed of the axle. Lesson learned cleaning my rotating bicycle wheel at the hub compared to the rim.
    I am surprised the R449 remained in production as long as it did.
    Having a Tri-ang open axle box, high friction background I was always looking for means of keeping friction down in my model choices.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 года назад

      Good morning John sounds like you put these models to good use. It does seem like an odd choice by Hornby to pursue this high friction method of pickup for their new range of coaches at the time. As you say amazing the kit remained available for that period even more amazing the numbers produced 51800 full thirds and 42000 brake thirds 1970-71 and from what I've read! But these are numbers produced, numbers sold may well be very different. Sadly I've not come across that information.
      Thanks again for watching glad you enjoyed the video.

    Always a treat watching your videos Oscar, although here in Aussie (NSW) it’s a windswept Sunday afternoon, rain bucketing down, yard flooded after recovering from hot days and bushfires over the past weeks!! What a way to relax to see your review of these coaches and lighting effects. When I look nowadays at the sophisticated electrics with model railways, I’m even more convinced Triang/Hornby Railways of that era were certainly innovative!!👍🏻

    Hello Oscar. Well I did something different this week. I read all the comments first, 23 of them. It heightened my anticipation of what was to come. Once again I compared my coaches to yours. I had never noticed the bogie difference before. Only one of mine has the incorrect bogie and it has the black corridor ends and silver seal wheels. This one was made in England. Another. one made in England has plastic wheels with white rims and teak ends. The other two were made in China and have the newer style three hole wheels along with the teak ends. There are three distinctly different roof colours amongst them. My Flying Scotsman is a tender drive version. Thank you for another great Sunday morning video. Regards, David.

    Thank you Oscar for another enjoyable video. I've actually still got my rake of those style Gresley coaches with black ends that I bought back in 1978.. 2x brake, 3x Composite and a Sleeper. Not in original condition as I've given them a sepia wash and new metal wheels which helps them blend in a little for background with newer stock but not bad for 4O+ years old..

    Another great video. John Menzies had a large store in Glasgow Buchanan Street that had a large toy dept in the basement . They had a large Hornby section from about 1974 to the time it shut , I think about 81/82 . There may have been other larger Menzies stores selling Hornby . But it was great as unlike model shops with everything behind glass cases the models were simply stacked on the shelves where you could go and examine box . I remember rows of loco boxes with the black insert line drawing , 2ps , Flying Scotsmen , Panniers all lined up . Lots of places to buy Hornby in Glasgow back then, only Hamleys now (and you’d need a second mortgage)

    Hi, Great video. You are certainly right about the drag caused by the lighting set. I used the pickups in conjunction with an LED lighting strip, bridge rectifier, resistor and stay alive capacitor for my DCC layout in a Hornby mk 1 composite coach with Silver Seal wheels. A waste of time. Now it is put aside whilst I look into alternative pick up methods.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 года назад

      Good evening Robert I was surprised at how much drag there was. When you push the plungers with your fingers there seems to be very little resistance, but then x4 for a single coach with the full kit fitted I suppose it all mounts up. Dread to think how a whole rake of coaches would behave.
      Great to hear you enjoyed the video thanks for watching

    Incidentally the slight difference in colour finish between the Tri-ang & Hornby LNER coaches is probably pretty accurate. As David mentions below, the Tri-ang coaches with oval toilet windows are Thompson designs whilst the Hornby ones are Gresleys. Thompson was Gresley's successor and designed his coaches with steel side panels, whereas Gresley had used wood which was left varnished. So that the different coaches blended together when in the same train, Thompson painted his steel coaches in a 'faux-teak' colour to broadly match the varnished teak finish of the Gresley stock. Whether by accident or design, Hornby seem to have replicated this successfully! (Great video as ever - essential part of Sunday morning).

    There is no better way to spend a Sunday morning. Watching Oscar's excellent videos while drinking morning coffee. Excellent!
    The coach lighting kit is an interesting bit of kit. But sadly I think they would have had better luck making something similar to what Tri-ang had offered earlier. A wiper on the steel axle would reduce the friction considerably. The plunger setup is akin to the Hornby OO days of years past. The issue would have been with the fitment of the bogies. They would have to have kept the rivet method of construction for the bogie attachment to the coach under frame to use a snap in wiper assembly. Lisa

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 года назад

      Good evening Lisa, I think your right about pick up from the axle being a better solution plus a rethink on the design of the silver seal wheels. And definitely no square section axels! I think the early silver seal wheel could have been modified successfully but possibly too costly. I think they may have gone this way with the R.107 L.M.S. Brake Van with tail light of 1974 I will have to go and have a look.

    I always think of 1977-78 as being a time when Hornby really stepped up a gear in terms of what they offered the more serious railway modeller. I remember thinking that the 1978 GWR King class was wonderful at the time. :)

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 года назад

      Good morning I think you’re right in the later 70s that seems to been massive investment and a new focus from Hornby with a great many new models which today might look quite toylike. But looking back represents quite a step forward in technologies and detail. I think the will to improve detail and accuracy for modellers was probably there within the company in the very late 60s and early 70s but the financial climate at the time prevented the type of product development we saw in the later 70s.

    A nice video Oscar, thanks for making it. I have two of the early ones and about ten of the later ones. I know you like to keep your collection in as-manufactured condition. I have enhanced my ones using Citadel Seraphim SepiaToner and then I used a gloss Lacquer to finish them off. They do look a lot better. Hornby brought out another version of them, but although the Teak effect was better. It looked like the whole side had been made out of one sheet of teak. The lastest ones look really great, but at a price that is beyond my budget. I hope to change all the wheels over to the ones you have, some of mine have them and some do not. I wish i knew which ones are to scale. Gresley coaches were longer than other makes. 61.6 inches if I remember rightly. Martin (Dhaka, Bangladesh.)

    I had a pair of the Maunsell coaches form the same era coupled up to an SR livereied M7 from the Local Passenger Set (how I wish I still had THAT!) I used the coach lighting setup as extra pickup rather than just for lighting and it worked very well. I don't recall the braking effect that much, but I only had one set of contacts fitted rather than 2. Loved the long shopts and the double headed setup, now I really ought to be restoring a Seuthe fitted Britannia and fitting the South Wales Pullman headocde and not watching videos:-)

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 года назад

      Good morning Andrew, great idea using as an extra pick. The instructions indicate that using two pick-ups is to prevent the lights flickering! However, it does go on to point out that they will probably over points and diamond crossings and is essential to keep both track and plungers clean to reduce the effects of flickering. The Britannia with headboard sounds great. It's a shame they did not make a range of head and name boards.

  • @lfewell2161
    @lfewell2161 4 года назад

    Maybe worth repeating the rolling down the hill/gradient test with just one set of plungers, the lights should still work okay as the sliding action of the plungers should make good electrical contact. Just wondering as the steel track has a coating of some sort, could the plungers, if fitted to every coach, wear this coating away over time.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 года назад +1

      The lighting kit will definitely work with one set of plungers. As it seems to work really well on the rolling road that way. As to the coating on the rails, I am sure it was long gone before I got the track being at best nearly 50 years old. You make a good point the plungers may well contribute to the general wear and tear of the track.

    Great to see this on your layout. I think that the earlier tri-ang coach lighting pickup system was better. This plunger system seems very poor.
