- How are holographic projections made ?
EDIT: To answer the most FAQ - I'm talking about "Voile", a silk like material. It's cheap, it's great, it's being sold (not exclusively though because there are many manufacturers) by gerriets (a sponsor of some of my projects; so keep that in mind, even if I don't make money from the link: www.gerriets.com/de/trevira-c....

The holographic projection of a 3D body on stage is nothing that can be achieved with ordinary video projectors and the means of classical theatre. But there is an agreement between audience and creator that an elaborate arrangement of layers on stage and a convincing 3D like lit projected content could be accepted as a „hologram“.

If you please, how do you SPELL the name of this material? I am trying to Google for it. Hual? Gual? It sounds like French, and for me, it is impossible to spell a French word from only the sound.

Yup we did a similar thing for a magic intro of a corpo event a couple year b4 covid .
Phillip, this stuff is *SO* amazing!
Now, I need to dream up how it could be applied to a rock show touring basketball arenas! I see how the stage lighting for the artists _must_ be completely separated from the 3D F/X. But in arenas, you have audience members that are seated high and to the right and left of the stage. Your example shows how to pull it off in a more narrow venue such as a theater. My only solution so far is to have the F/X projection curtain being built as an arc, with a media server sharing the projection feed (split between 3-4 projectors) upon the 1/3 of a circle facing the audience, and then build the stage (also in an arc) much more shallow than normal to allow the spill to land on the arena floor behind the band There would likely still be some spill witnessed by the audience, but with some fiddling, it could be minimalized, and only seen by the audience seated high and to the left-right of the stage.
Any thoughts?
You could research on Circus Roncalli. They use projected holographic illusions instead of live animals. But for stadiums there are many more implications.
@@philipp7pc Thanks, Phillip! I will look into them! Indoor, 17,000-seat arenas were what I was speaking about. As for outdoor stadiums, where the band is usually presented much higher off the ground,, I would think that you could use that as an advantage to hide the spill. But .... now we'd have to figure out how to get the projectors high enough to aim down on such a huge set-up. Cable suspension perhaps? This is all so fascinating! I love a challenge! I can't wait to see this circus application!
Outdoor use the sky to hide the spill. ;] (up)
Indoor we usually use additional material to dim the spill.

I'm writing a stage work and some situations require things like these, so if you have a moment and if I may ask:
What are the clips at 0:20 (dancers with letters and top-view camera/mirror?), 0:24 (water ceiling), and 0:29 (dancer in clouds) all from?
Furthermore, if you'll indulge me:
Is the top view with the dancers at 0:20 just a mirror?
Why is there a reflection of the door and the woman at the top of 0:24?
And is 0:29 a real dancer suspended and lit behind a scrim?

Hi. Thanks for watching and sorry for the delayed answer.
All the clips used for projection are tailor made for the venues. In the case the first is "Alice in wonderland" at the Hanover State Ballet. The water might have been (can't watch right now) the Flying Dutchman at the Saarbrücken State Theatre. And the dancer suspended behind a scrim projection of clouds was at the Basel Ballet.
There was a huge diagonal mirror in the back of the stage in Hanover and also in Saarbrücken (You're quite observant;)
And, yes, that's a real dancer.

It would really help if you used supertitles or something for the technical terms, because I cannot understand what some of these materials are that you're mentioning. I recognize "scrim" and "toile", but what the heck is (what sounds like) "wll" (00:35), or "oah" (01:46)?

@@philipp7pc I've been following you, I'm really learning a lot from your videos, I have worked in a couple og Broadway Musicals and Cirque Du Soleil shows where we have used holographic scrims, and your knowledge about it are really great help for me. I know this is not a Blender channel, but I wanted to ask you (once again, and sorry about it) How did you make the translucent scrim material, I can't make it work.

I'm trying to simply project a animated 3d video from the ceiling to the table, the people seated at the chairs around the table, would they see it as 3d ? if not what can I do to make it appear 3d to all the viewers around the table? and what kind of projector do I need for this. Hi. Thanks for watching. As I mention in the first video of this series, there are no true projection holograms (as yet - maybe some good attempts). Therefore you will need a medium to project on. Mostly those are semi transparent cloth that shows the projected image while being kinda invisible itself. If the image is convincing 3D you might get away with the illusion.
@@philipp7pc I'm not going for the hologram stuff, im just thinking of creating the illusion on the table by projecting a video for each person seated at the table and predicting their view angel, that way the illusion works. however, i'm not sure what type of projector i need for this, do I have to use 3d projectors or normal ones for this ?
@scuddkidd4017 you could Google "le petit chef" they did a really nice application.
That was my inspiration, problem they didn't share any of their used equipement. I've emailed them but I don't expect them to reply :O)

What do you mean "wøl"... "vœl"... vüūl... wœll... , that is not a term I am familiar with.
Yea sorry. Sometimes I forget how used I get to certain products and just mention them casually. It's "Voile". A fine textile mostly used in the clothing industry or for decoration.
@@philipp7pc ah yes polyester / linen sheer net curtain. Usually grievous flammable even when hosed down with polybrominated bottled cancer.
There are a bunch of projection-specific low cost curtain nets also, usually with the carbon nanotubes or mica-ish mineral additive to the plastic yarn, or a coating on the fiber, often metallised nylon is employed, and vapour deposition has potential for active materials in the future. These are usually classified as types of gauze rather than net curtain, and brought up to tension on a frame rather than left free to flap about or get tangled up in performers.
