    ABOUT DR JUSTIN SUNG
    Justin is an ex-medical doctor turned full-time learning coach. He's passionate about taking a very practical and evidence-based approach to learning and self-management. Unlike most study influencers, he has extensive experience actually working with real people, rather than just looking at theory or anecdotal tips to make videos about. He's worked with thousands of people around the world for over 10 years, teaching them to manage their studies and time more efficiently using novel and rigorously field-tested techniques. Justin is the co-founder of iCanStudy, which developed the world's first fully integrated, high-efficiency learning system using cognitive retraining approaches.

    First principles are deep knowledge which are gained through mastery in a related subject. Ie if i study English Literature to a high level I might be able to grasp many of the ideas behind writing a good history essay quickly. How did I get to that level of skill in English though, through quality study.

    to break it down Barney style for those of us who need an analogy to understand "getting to 1st principles":
    when you solve chess puzzles, there are moves that leave options for your opponent.
    But when you find few or even only one possible legal moves FORCING your oppoent into an end game forcing them into a mate, those are "fundamental truths" in a system of options in a strategy puzzle.
    And you can format many queries into logical/strategic puzzles where you examine the configuration of each element to find the most optimized solution and that becomes a "fundametal truth" where you don't need an opponent or a variable outside your control to fumble or align to your confirmation bias for you to win or get your way.
    its either "this piece of knowledge is true because it's self evident" or it "conditionally supports a point" in which case it's an anecdote or outlier from the truth you are seeking. If it's close but not fully there, it shouldnt be treated like a foundation for other bits of knowledge.

      @@oreo753Once you master the first principles, it doesn't take THAT much effort really, it will become more akin to doing something you already know, but practicing harder to become better. Laying the foundation is the tough part, but doesn't require much time if you do it properly.

    Here’s a first principle I have never understood: what is the point of getting an education? Everyone I’ve asked has told me something along the lines of salary for a job, or social status to get married, or to “learn about the world”, whatever that means, but I failed out of a prestigious university and have acquired all of those things outside of an academic environment, so what is the intrinsic value of being educated? Genuinely asking because getting back into it has been a serious struggle

    • @gokulhemanthkumar4556
      @gokulhemanthkumar4556 6 месяцев назад

      Dude, if you managed to acquire all of those outside of an academic environment, you ARE educated my friend! Rejoice! There are multiple ways to being educated, and you have managed to do it outside of the conventional way, much like a lot of people in our past and present, and definitely in future as well. The point of education IS to be a well functioning human being able to meet his needs and desires in our globalised world. It is a tough task in our modern era, what being information doubling and tripling at enormous exponential rates. It's not necessary to acquire this in an academic environment, but it can definitely help to be in that environment with a learning mindset, that's all. I hope I have made the first principles clear to you.

      I think you just do. Just try have that question, that concept in your head with a level of focus. I just think WHATS THE POINT OF THIS and like find patterns and connections? Like I learnt something in systems design about how a system is only “perfect” when there is nothing left you can to take away from it. And then while reading about theatre on my own time, an actress said that acting is misconceived as a process of adding on: wigs, costumes and emotions. But it is actually taking away all the things not necessary for the performance, which is much harder and more painful. So I go OHHHH and sort of deduce from there that the process of getting a good, sustained performance is subtractive, not additive. (I can probably word this more concisely lol) It’s a bit different because it was studying + hobby reading but I hope thats what he was talking about.
