Great Video, I love the design of the new D series. As i'm from a General Motor family the D series is like a Chevrolet and the J series is a Cadillac.
Both the D models (commuter and touring/charter) share the same 410 horsepower Cummins X12! Just happened to be looking at brochures just as you started talking about them hehe (Nicely done too MCI! the new D model looks amazing!)
Great video James! After driving the D45CRT variant for Indian Trails in actual service (we needed the center lift but spec’d it like a D4520 otherwise) I can say the design is decent. We did have some issues with exterior lights almost immediately burning out. The mirrors are like those found on a transit bus and took some getting used to. There are a few significant blind spots and less overhead luggage space than before. The fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired. The 4 coaches we received have the swing door rather than the bi-part door. It’s very hard to get it adjusted and it’s an electric design so if you don’t have power for some reason you can’t open the door from the outside. So while it looks like a Van Hool door it’s an entirely different design from other coaches. Just some observations after working with them. Feels a lot like a J that shrank a little in the wash. 😂 Apparently MCI has changed things and now you can get a D4520 with the midship lift. To be honest the D4520 Vs. D45CRT designations seem to be pretty interchangeable. The rep who came to train us on the new coaches said lift position was the big difference. The next set of D’s we get will be D4520’s in all likelyhood but they’ll be the same specs as these CRT’s.

The D45 CRT LE is an excellent coach for the transit agency that I'm working for. Excellent for highway travel and easy accessibility for mobility devices. However we demand the luggage compartment area for airport routes. Let see how MCI solve this problem
Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff between the luggage space and the vestibule area. There is some below floor luggage capacity, but it is only accessible from the roadside. As you already pointed out, this is not ideal for some applications of the D45 CRT LE.

That new D model seriously looks like a bus that could be build currently by a european manufacturer. It looks so modern! Well except from the windshield but still...
I Like the D Coaches Dash with the Part Digital/Part Analog Gauges and the headlights they are sort of like the J Headlights but Slightly Modified. I Mainly Like the 1 door variant Because it is most Simular to the J even with the sliding door. And i think one of those in PCC's Livery would look Sick!
Let's hope the digital clusters don't have the issue where they don't turn on along with the bus like some older J series buses had. Gotta say so far our 2023s are fine, but our 2019s do that once in a while for whatever reason
Congratulations on your promotion James! Been awhile since I have commented on one of your videos, I am still watching though! Despite not having driven a coach for about 2years now, still enjoying phlebotomy!
Hey Katherine. It's good to hear from you. I was just thinking about you the other day. I was wondering if you had maybe gone back to driving lol. Thank you for the comment. Hope you are well.
Good video James! I've seen a couple of these on the road with Southeastern Stages out of ATL. The cockpit is still very much MCI but slightly more modernized (I only have the 4505 to compare to).
I got to drive for my first time a 2010 MCI D twice earlier this week, for the new company I now drive for.. For the rest of my week, I drove MCI 2013 J model. I think I prefer the J models so far. I do like it so far.
Yeah James those are some classic buses. I'm a bus riding person. And you know I've ridden in your company a long time ago. I rode Burlington Trailways a couple of months ago to Omaha nebraska. And you know Van galder bus. So I'm always kind of just interested in learning about what types of buses I write on.
I have been watching your videos for a while and I love the fact based presentation, other channels should learn from it. Keep up the good work, I will keep enjoying the videos and driving "my" MCI MC12 6V92T-5spd. Cheers.
I’ve always loved MCI coaches, but these new D models just don’t do it for me. I think the front ends look horrible. Congratulations on your CEO position and I love your content. I am a big time bus nut and have been from a young age. I was a Transit Bus Operator for 10 years and I am going into my 2nd year as a Motorcoach Operator and I LOVE IT!!!
8:52 was a good bus. I even have pictures of it up in the air, no wheels touching the ground, and a few with it burred in snow when the engine blew a head gasket. It looks so tired there...Back when I drove it and its sisters, they all still had the new coach smell and drove so nice. One day Id like to buy one and restore it. But it will have to wait in line lol. Also, you missed a D model. The D4000N. (I wont mention the D4000H or the other electric prototype), but the N was a 96 wide D for the Holland tunnel lines that NJ Transit wanted. Until they said no, and went with NovaBus. I never drove those, but I was told it was a rocket. The power of the D4000, with the maneuverability of an MC9. One thing Im curious about. NJ Transit was really UPSET when they did the G style headlights on the D model, that MCI had to made the D4005 Classic, with square sealed headlights, just like an old D, with the new funky rear (thats now old). At some point I guess they took delivery of some of the G nose buses, but Im curious what model MCI will build for NJT. They are the largest fleet in the US, and its majority coach, and they are very picky. I dont want to say bad things about a mans work, but after designing the D series, and the Renaissance, its hard to top those. Man had his work cut out for him. I guess I got used to that space between the headlight and the base of the windshield. So thanks. Thanks a lot. I wanted a MC9 in my fleet, so now I have to find a 102D3 as well! And of course I want one that I drove before. Great video!
Congratulations on your promotion. I love the J Model chassis. I'm more interested in the operations of the loading/unloading doors on all coaches. I have always been fascinated by them. Bi fold, sliding, etc.
Awesome looking coach! Now you should make a video about the J3500 if you haven't already. I also have a question? Do you know why Prevost doesn't make any 35-foot coaches?
Main issue with LE model that my company identified, was the luggage bays were only accessible on the closed (street) side. We service the airport, so luggage is a thing, and loading in traffic is an absolute non-starter.
New Jersey Transit was gonna order these but we canned the order, but before I explain why, I need to discuss the way NJT does things. When NJT orders buses they like to order buses in bulk, as shown by our 7 year contract with MCI for over 1,000 D4500CTs! Anyhow, because we always order in bulk, we always give a couple hundred to private contractors who run contracted routes in the state of NJ, these buses being operated by the contractor but owned by NJT. With these buses comes some rules from the DOT of NJ: 1. The bus must be used for contracted operations only 2. The buses can not leave the tri state area (NJ, NY, CT) With these rules, everything should be fine, right? Nope. After a few years, it was becoming apparent the contractors could simply not be able to keep these coaches because of financial issues and breaking the rules that I just mentioned. Before we got to that point, NJT ordered 172 D45CRTs, however, when we realized what was up with those contractor run D4500CTs, NJT forced the hand of the contractors to hand a lot of them back (It’s important to mention that NJT themselves operated most of the coaches on their own routes but the contractors operated a good lot of them). So when one contractor ended operations, DeCamp, NJT got the D4500CTs they operated returned to them, fulfilling part of the D45CRT order. When CoachUSA and Academy stated downsizing operations due to financial issues, NJT got a good bunch of the D4500CTs they ran returned back, which fulfilled the remaining part of the D45CRT order. Realizing that the order was no longer needed because of all the former private contractor coaches being returned, NJT indefinitely put the order on hold. NJT won’t replace the D4500CTs yet given how the oldest one is from 2016 and the youngest one is from 2023 (NJT actually got the last ever D4500CT built).
@nck5000 I really do need to do a video on Prevost. All of our Prevosts are based at our Peoria facility. I should make a video on them next time I'm there.
After I drove transit I learned on a 45' foot Van Hool T945 rocketship with a Cummins M11+. When I later encountered the 102DL3 I didn't like it as much because they turned "like the Queen Mary" and the driver seat wasn't an air seat. Also in that early 2000's era there were a slew of modern-look coaches including the E & J, the Setra S417, etc, and your passengers would be envious along side them at a big event somewhere. But, they were solid busses and made lots of money for their operators while plenty of fly-by-nights bled themselves dry leasing newer equipment.
Thanks for the informative video. Has MCI ever built a bus with turning tag wheels? My old beef with the D model was the excessive wear on the tag tires when turning sharply. I had a better turning radius with my Setra and Neoplan CityLiner.
@@amuroray1085 I have been out of the business for 25 years, so thanks for the answer. I am giving up my CDL when it expires in 2 weeks. 70 years, end of the line. 48 years of fun.
For the next bus on the market I want an istv with the Volvo toilet setup except with a bigger waste tank and fresh tank that does not take DEF and runs like a scolded cat and rides like luxury. Oh yea and the push button wheelchair ramp and extra luggage bay for the driver.
@@MotorcoachWorld Think of the money you could make. Telling a redneck they can go to Niagara Falls and Myrtle Beach on a badass prison bus with really nice hotels. They would drop the season tickets and ROLL.
Yes, the new D-coach models have an option for Bendix Fusion - adaptive cruise/collision mitigation/lane departure warning. Fun fact - The J series coaches also have an option for Bendix Fusion. The MCI legacy D-coach models also had an option for adaptive cruise/collision mitigation, but it wasn't as capable.
The 40 foot range looks more proportional for that north american wheelbase configuration. The design of this new MCI model is the paradigm shift for north american motorcoach we’ve all been waiting, maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s a good start.
It's nice to see the D series isn't gone, but ever since I first saw the LE prototype, I always thought it was pretty awkward how the vestibule is both lower and secluded, separated from the rest of the bus. I'm confident that a lot of disabled people wouldn't feel comfortable being set "apart" from the rest of the crowd or charter group. Seems to me that the best offered option is still to have the rear exterior wheelchair lift along with the moveable seats in the back. At least people using these are still sitting along with everybody else. Still hope to see one in real life eventually, curious how it compares to the J series
I am surprised that MCI is not offering the ZF or Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission. I've seen a video of the Eaton in action at their test track and it was mind blowing although they were using trucks with the Cummins X15 engine. That would make one hell of a drive train for an MCI or any other motorcoach.
Interesting to see the new generation of the venerable D series bus. I would like to see a more detailed and thorough review of the wheelchair section of the bus including how the public actually uses it. And to find out how it’s actually working out in field use. I am somewhat concerned it is a bit of a road block to access and egress of the rear of the bus and may be a congestion point for entry and exit from the bus. As such, it will increase stage length times due to slower passenger boarding and exiting the bus.
I love buses, always did as a child, people ask me why do I love them so much, and my answer be I don't know I just do and I'm gonna continue to love them. I hope to start driving them one day soon. James I guess you can consider me a bus nut LOL I am a Fan of yours

If you want me to tell you what their specifications are DD13 with B500R.

Manual definite no, automated maaaaayyyyybe but honestly I've never come across anyone who actually wishes and enjoys driving an automated manual, so I doubt it

Hello PC CEO 1IYT..........James that stands for Peoria Charter Chief Executive Officer One interesting you tuber.......Loved those early photos of you, looked like a pro then, look like a pro now...........Keep the videos coming, they are really great the way you put them together, looks like it would take a lot of your time......Thank You James .........Jeff Thompson Rockford Illinois
Hey thank you! Much appreciated Jeff.
The 'Legacy' D-Series is my favorite type of bus, and NJT has 1,222 D4500CTs in service.
I do too lol hmmm 🤔
Let's hope the digital clusters don't have the issue where they don't turn on along with the bus like some older J series buses had. Gotta say so far our 2023s are fine, but our 2019s do that once in a while for whatever reason
Great looking bus. I haven’t seen any big coaches like that used as public transit here in Calgary Canada.
Banff Roam have 4 MCI D45CRT LE
@@titanxing3514 that’s more long haul though right?
@@DMSparky For route 8 or route 10 those long route
In Banff roam transit uses theses buses and I have been on them few times
Congratulations on your promotion James! Been awhile since I have commented on one of your videos, I am still watching though! Despite not having driven a coach for about 2years now, still enjoying phlebotomy!
Hey Katherine. It's good to hear from you. I was just thinking about you the other day. I was wondering if you had maybe gone back to driving lol. Thank you for the comment. Hope you are well.
@@MotorcoachWorld I am doing very well, thank you James!
Good video James! I've seen a couple of these on the road with Southeastern Stages out of ATL. The cockpit is still very much MCI but slightly more modernized (I only have the 4505 to compare to).
I was hoping to see some in grayhound liveries... But I believe they don't buy MCIs anymore is that correct?
@MotorcoachWorld currently no, our new buses will be Vanhools
That's a cool bus, my company I work for here in Florida has Volvo and Temsa coaches
Cheers.
Fantastic, very informative, James.🎉
Hello from India 🇮🇳 ♥
The state of CO just took delivery of some new D45CRT’s. Spotted one today.
I haven't seen a Peter Pan coach in decades. Didn't know they were still around.
Peter Pan still going strong up in New England,I see them almost daily.Shout to Peter Pan!
I still remember my first mci D, gold line number 523, chartered dc to Disney world, 1983❤❤❤❤❤
I see these a lot on Xpress bus runs hello James!!
Hey how you doing!
Bi fold, sliding, etc.
now i wonder if they'll make a hybrid version?
I love a mci bus
Awesome looking coach! Now you should make a video about the J3500 if you haven't already.
I also have a question? Do you know why Prevost doesn't make any 35-foot coaches?
Hmmm 🤔 interesting question I'll have to look into that lol Thank you
No they don't
With these buses comes some rules from the DOT of NJ:
1. The bus must be used for contracted operations only
2. The buses can not leave the tri state area (NJ, NY, CT)
With these rules, everything should be fine, right?
Actually NJT And the private companies Didn’t like the CRT along with MTA Drivers voted against the buses also
love your video James but why you don have prevost bus in your fleets? star trek but wee see star war lol
No no no. Don’t give him ideas. PREVOST and MERCEDES-BENZ don’t have CUMMINS engines and I own stock in them. 😀
They do have several PREVOST’s
@@crabbymilton390lol 🤣
Yes. Some D's, E's and J's have steering tags.
@@amuroray1085 I have been out of the business for 25 years, so thanks for the answer. I am giving up my CDL when it expires in 2 weeks. 70 years, end of the line. 48 years of fun.
Yes they did for the last 10 years or so
I retired from tour driving in 2001, so I’m outta touch.
the Photoshop guy at MCI really did a good job there.
For the next bus on the market I want an istv with the Volvo toilet setup except with a bigger waste tank and fresh tank that does not take DEF and runs like a scolded cat and rides like luxury. Oh yea and the push button wheelchair ramp and extra luggage bay for the driver.
That is quite a wish list lol I love it😅
@@MotorcoachWorld Think of the money you could make. Telling a redneck they can go to Niagara Falls and Myrtle Beach on a badass prison bus with really nice hotels. They would drop the season tickets and ROLL.
Last time I drove we had MCI 9, 8,7
8:26 Key word- TYPICALLY.
The state of Colorado has D45CRT’s WITH bathrooms onboard for its intercity line run service.
will their new bus have adaptive cruise control and lane departer warning like on our newer Freightliner Cascadia trucks at work?
Yes, the new D-coach models have an option for Bendix Fusion - adaptive cruise/collision mitigation/lane departure warning. Fun fact - The J series coaches also have an option for Bendix Fusion. The MCI legacy D-coach models also had an option for adaptive cruise/collision mitigation, but it wasn't as capable.
The 40 foot range looks more proportional for that north american wheelbase configuration. The design of this new MCI model is the paradigm shift for north american motorcoach we’ve all been waiting, maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s a good start.
Hi James , I hear form Cummins few day ago .
Cummins X10 will be have an similar power band of the X12 .
He's the CEO now❤
It's nice to see the D series isn't gone, but ever since I first saw the LE prototype, I always thought it was pretty awkward how the vestibule is both lower and secluded, separated from the rest of the bus.
That center door will make it so much quicker for people to enter/exit. It looks like there are stairs to get down to the center door.
I love buses, always did as a child, people ask me why do I love them so much, and my answer be I don't know I just do and I'm gonna continue to love them. I hope to start driving them one day soon. James I guess you can consider me a bus nut LOL I am a Fan of yours
2:37 Discovery Klingons. *rolls eyes*
The D series I believe is the only 40' coach still around. Others are standard in 45' including the Prevost X345
Have you driven any of the new body-style Prevost H3s yet?
Unfortunately no. I need to make that happen. They're not based out of the facility I work out of
@MotorcoachWorld Oh I see
Impressive and if you are wondering there were 2010 D4505s have a Detroit diesel engine EPA 10 compliant I've been on one of those Trans Bridge Lines Bethlehem Pennsylvania 363/365 Although on my return trip Trans Bridge Lines J4500 470 385. If you want me to tell you what their specifications are DD13 with B500R.
I thought the height of MCI J4500 was 13' that's what the plaques says ...but still a really cool video you produced
I saw a d model grayhound chouch 😆😆😆😆😆
Ventura county Transportation commission buses have alot of MCI d4505s.
Mr Wang do MCI have the alternative to use either cummins or detriot engines?
Not anymore. CUMMINS is the sole engine in MCI products. The only way to get a DETROIT is if you buy a MERCEDES TOURRIDER. DAIMLER owns both so it’s a proprietary issue.
6:43 Phoenix Valley Metro has a fleet of these type of buses.
I'm proud of you and your new duds. But you're still a baby your high school class in 2000 good grief son. Great video! But boy you said a mouthful letters. Your wife could stick them up through the school and teach an English class and a math class. Take good care of yourself.
Can they give you automataed 13 speed transmission woth engine brake or stright manuel
I think PREVOST still offers an automated manual. MCI discontinued that ZF several years ago. I think many were also swapped out for ALLISON because they were so jerky and slow.
Manual definite no, automated maaaaayyyyybe but honestly I've never come across anyone who actually wishes and enjoys driving an automated manual, so I doubt it
Nice video James. I kind of like the D4520. I wonder how many companies are going to order the 40ft D?
So......All of that space for only one wheelchair and a seat......😮
How often do you see 2 wheelchairs on a bus
@me-it9jn All city buses and wheelchair coaches have area's for two wheelchairs......
This coach also has room for 2 wheel chairs.
Yippee I’m early🎉
I just got my CDL. Thank you for all your videos and education. My question is, how much will commercial insurance be a month for a 2010 Coach, that sits 55 passengers. i’m in Las Vegas area. thinking of purchasing one soon.
✌🏾
Thats a very pretty bus. I like the second side door very much. It looks very subtle. Do you think they will stretch these newer buses to 49ft?
The number one rule for all drivers of all vehicles.....no fog , no fog lights.....like to see um implement a 500 dollar fine , left lane not passing , 1000 dollar fine
