    Man, the sound design team in Elite carried half of the game’s environment. Just awesome.

    • @danlowe
      @danlowe Год назад +61

      The environments were arguably better before the expansions. To make them explorable or useful for ground content they made them a lot less interesting. Then again so did No Man's Sky and they straight up deleted people's planets out from under them. I've played almost 600 hours in No Man's Sky and half that time trying to find a world like the one I was exploring in the release version of the game.

      @@ha1ban3 Not sure if they had basebuilding yet back then. But they've regenerated the planets more than once to add new features. I do know that if you used terrain manipulator to sculpt around where you put your buildings that the ground will sometimes be regenerated when you come back, even inside whole buildings. Some objects automatically sculpt their shape into a flat plane which shouldn't refill but many object just inhabit the same space so you have to terrain edit to access them. Those ones seem to refill at random. Why it's probably better to find game generated caverns or only build on bedrock you can't cut with the manipulator.

Ships that are up-to-date are called 'Gold Standard' ships. Gold Standard ships have entirely automated doors, however they also have physicalized buttons, handles, switches - you name it - for everything. Even light switches and door locks work. • @metalvox89
      @metalvox89 Год назад +76

      I’m okay without the transitional landing for Starfield because I think it would make it much more buggy based on the amount of content on some of the planets, but traveling and being able to walk around your ship while traveling to another planet would’ve been nice. Like I know someone tested it and it took them 7 hours to reach a planet on Starfield, but it was simply a place holder. If they had the ability to, not necessarily do a grav jump, but a faster traveling like in NMS to cut the time down and allow you to walk around, etc in the ship to craft, etc, and the planets not being a place holder and it acts like the planets you arrive to normally, then that would have been enough for most I think

      @@metalvox89 then for the planet it doesn't load the random generated place until you get close or pick it so its easy to put in, then space can be left as random generated nothing as is but at least there is some kind of flying in/out so immersion isn't broke. I wonder if modders could add a "sandbox" of atmosphere you could fly in for a bit once you click to enter planet then after you travel down a bit it puts you to floor like normal. Id even be 100% fine with that which would be easy, another loading point but worth it . Plus you could leave a option for fast landing if someone doesn't want that

      Keep in mind, Starfield is an RPG first and foremost, running on an old (albeit, updated) engine. I think a lot of the - let's be honest - uninteresting gameplay was cut, giving them more resources to use elsewhere.
      I love Elite and Star Citizen to death, but flying around Supercruise or in Quantum takes up a rather large portion of game time. Everyone was constantly looking for ways to shorten those trips, because they wanted to get to the meat of the gameplay. More Immersive? Yes, which is great for a sim. But good gameplay for a video game? No.

Triple A games cot way more to play when you can play Star Citizen for only about $40 if you want, you don't have tons of money on the game yet people still always open their mouths, when you have crap games like COD copying and pasting the same game yet people still spend tons of money on them.

    The systems in Elite are seriously polished. FSD is so cool how you can play orbital mechanics and have to deal with entry. Then just punching fsd and flying off towards a dot you thought might be a planet. The way coms with towers work felt like actually flying a ship and the landing mode on the radar meant you never felt like you needed to go into 3rd person to tell what you were doing with your ship. Star citizen has so much more in it than Elite but what Elite had in it was really well done. Powering down so your ship went cold and just drifted invisible to radar. Rushing back to a station on light air cause your canopy broke. So many cool systems.

      its ok to bitch about a game developed by a trillion dollar corporation when they have had over 7 years and near endless resources and they still chose to use an engine that is decades old at this point; have a lack luster story that honestly just rips no mans sky and just is overall underwhelming. Sure you might like it and thats ok but having low standards for games is the reason why big corps pump shitty games is because of people like you having low standards for what a game should be.
      How is it possible that a crowd funded game like star citizen with a smaller team and lower budget is able to accomplish so much more in 9 years, in terms of immersive space exploration and multiplayer mind you, than a multi billion dollar corp. Instead we just get a reskinned space fallout 4. Idk about you but I think holding big corps to make a good game that BEATS everything else is only fair since they have so much more in terms of resources and creative potential and 7 FRICKEN YEARS to make a decent game. I wish Starfield had that feature while I enjoy the landing cutscenes which I don't mind and still enjoying the game with all of the content it offers me especially building your own ship and outpost while I think No Man's Sky has the best building outpost options to me which I think the only thing that both Star Citizen and Starfield are probably missing, the best building options. I surely want to play Star Citizen after I'm finished with few playthroughs of Starfield. Lol.

      it has to be, because Star Citizen (like E:D) is nearly a pure space sim, so flying the ship is most of what you do. That's not a criticism, just, that's where the focus is. One of the most memorable times I've had in Star Citizen was an especially hairy landing, in a blizzard, on a planet with a barely-habitable temperature, with a ship full of salvage, while running out of atmospheric fuel because I had to do a go-around due to a mix-up with the spaceport tower.

    Elite Dangerous' sound design is just at a whole new level in comparison to the other games. It really lets you feel the weight and size of your ship.
    I especially love how your engines are muffled when you're in space, get loud and clear when you land on a planet or fly in an area with oxygen, and echo when you're inside of a space station. I also love how you can hear the sand and grit hitting against your ship as it's creaking during a burn in on a planetary landing. It's just so damn satisfying feeling and hearing those immense engine rumbles in your ears when you have 5.1 surround sound and a bomb ass sound woofer.

      Land and take off from planets 50+ times per play session and tell me how you like it? Bethesda playtested it, but it was found to be much too tedious. I'm thinking through something I just did. I was crafting at my home base, ran out of materials. Left the planet to try vendors a, b, c, d, e - all on different planets. All were out. So, I travelled around scanning planets to find the ore I needed, landed and mined some. Got back in my ship, picked another place on the planet, travelled there and mined some more. Repeat two more times. Flew back to home base to finish crafting. Decided I would do some research into another crafting. Needed materials and components. Back to checking vendors and/or mining/gathering/haversting/scavenging. A dozen stops later and I'm back and able to do my research. I then decide to do some quests, pick one, leave current planet and go to new planet for quest. Once I get there I scan it and think it's a good idea to go see if I have a better set of gear with better resistances to this planet's climate, pick up my minigun, and swap companions. So I go back to home base, get gear and companions better suited to the quest and planet and head back. I could go on, but you get the idea. Those long landing cycles may work for those games, but they would render Starfield unplayable, tedious, and frustrating. You'd spend 2 hours landing and taking off just to do a thirty minute quest. I don't want a landing and taking off simulator. That would get obnoxious very fast - which is why Starfield doesn't have it. They COULD have it, but they chose not to for the reasons I stated above. It would be infuriating having to do that menial task 50 times a session when you're just trying to get somewhere and/or get things done. You know, real rpg things?

    As an ED veteran, to me it's the best at it. Although the gliding re-entry is a little "loading screen" trick, because there's no point on re-entry if there is no atmosphere. With Odyssey they implemented thin atmospheres for some planets, but the re-entry has been always there and still is for non atmospheric planets. But still, it's the best.
    The stellar forge is a technical miracle. It's amazing how you look at the stars, and it's not a skybox, but the actual stars that you can visit. And although the jump is another loading screen, technically you can fly from star to star if you had enough time and fuel. In fact there are systems that are a month/light or so from each other, and you can do it without jump, because the Alcubierre engine allows the ship to fly hundreds of times the speed of light, so the travel would last a few real hours. It's been done and proven.
    But everything has its own downs, Starfield, NMS... and ED is not an exception. Everything becomes boring and repetitive after a while, no matter if the approach is over the top like in NMS, or realistic like ED. The lack of variety and objectives can kill the fun. But I have to say, that for ED it took me thousands of hours to get bored of it. Sadly, they abandoned the stellar forge development because its creator left Frontier.

    • @phoenixcraft9940
      @phoenixcraft9940 11 месяцев назад +1

      It's a bit of a nitpick, but the stars are actually a skybox. What Stellar Forge does is it takes a snapshot of the surrounding area of the galaxy you're in and then places it in a procedural skybox. And an Alcubierre Drive, while technically allowing you to reach speeds faster than light, cannot in practical application as it would violate causality - it is impossible for information to travel faster than light. Thus, Star Citizen's method of performing 25% of the speed of light with an Alcubierre Drive is the most realistic, as they provide a physicalized seamless system where there is no supercruise and no loading screens. That fact alone makes the system feel larger than Elite ever did in my opinion, as like you said, Elite gets boring after a while. I remember exploration being very repetitive, system after system, you eventually see all that there is to see. For me, Star Citizen has not been like that at all despite there being only one system, as most of the gameplay comes with unique interactions with players, the physics system, dynamic events, etc.

    Elite Dangerous has some of the most gigantic missed potential I've ever seen in any game. The game is so close to being the best space-sim out there, but the devs have practically given up on it and it's just not quite there yet. Out of all of the space games I've played, Elite (imo) has some of the best flight mechanics which make me feel like I am actually a starship pilot, and it also has phenomenal sound design. Coupled with the fact that the entire Milky Way galaxy is in the game, and you have limitless possibilities. I just wish they could have somehow implemented proper atmospheric flight / landings, and done a better job with Odyssey, which imo was a massive letdown. That and the content in the game is extremely repetitive.

    • @yvannenikolainethercott5709
      @yvannenikolainethercott5709 Год назад +2

      True. At the time that Elite was new, it was the best sounding and piloting game I've ever played. I can't exactly say it's realistic, but the deep piloting mechanics were so great. There's a learning curve for "assisted" flight, but once you master that, you can go full manual and the piloting just opens up so much. Being able to out-manuever stuff even if I am just using KBM was so satisfying, what more if I had a full-blown HOTAS setup.
      My first ever landing was also the most memorable. It wasn't quite like the other. The sound effects REALLY made it so immersive and nerve-wracking, and it was a real complex task at first.
      It's such a missed potential, I absolutely agree. If the idiot devs didn't hire contractual developers to develop the first 20% of their game (bare systems, sounds, physics, etc.) and just literally hired the developers of Elite permanently, the game could've grown much larger and could've made them more money. But alas, they let go of the core team that made the game, and had to work with people who weren't familiar with the systems in place, leaving it in its basic form and having to improvise from it.

    Everyone who writes that Starfield is like a game 10 years ago - you are optimists! Think about it, there's this old game called Freelancer, so how far is Starfield's space gameplay from that game? How much better is Starfield's engine than 2003's Freelancer. Of course, Freelancer did not make a poor shooter on the planets, only that's the difference. If the engine is patched up, then the same 4k textures and some post-processing, shadows, lights, etc. can be rolled onto it. There will be no difference, but that's because Starfield's engine is a slightly improved 2002 engine from Morrowind, even if you think about it, it will become clear from this position that Freelancer's engine is also newer by 1 year lol. Bethesda is stuck in gamedev 20 years ago and doesn't want to do anything about it. If Todd has been telling us fables about a super game for about 10 years and we got this piece of shit on the way out, then imagine what TEC 6 will look like. They don’t know how to make games anymore, their latest releases have finally made it clear that if there are no serious changes in the company, then it’s easier to close it, because apart from base shit they can’t do anything, and in the future with such a working staff they won’t will be able to make a normal product even more so. Worst of all, they made the latest games, realizing that they would release unfinished pieces of shit diluted with the work of some kind of neural network, arranged whole presentations telling us about how everything is wonderful with them and that they have been making the game not only for a year, but for a whole decade! And then they start selling this trash as real AAA games, wiping their feet on their fans and other buyers. Bethesda is a company of lying assholes who should already be tried for fraud!

      If you were expecting a massive space sim from Starfield, I don't know what to tell you. It's not Bethesda's fault you didn't know that it would be a Bethesda RPG set in space. Also, really disingenuous to say that the Creation Engine 2 and Starfield are shitty. You do realize it's a new engine, right? Have you played the game, or are you just parroting what all the other haters are highlighting about what's wrong with the game, and you don't actually know what the game does really well?
      Every engine in use right now is based on an older engine. GTA V and RDR2 are working with an engine that originated in 2006. That was used in a ping-pong game.
      As for the rest of your rant... I have no idea what some of the stuff you're saying even means. Todd hasn't been promising a "super game" for 10 years, it wasn't even revealed 10 years ago. It didn't even start development 10 years ago. It was announced in 2018. Starfield is also far from unfinished. It has content upon content upon content. It's overwhelming how many quests there are and places to go. You can pop into a settlement and get half a dozen quests that take you all over the game, not to mention the larger cities.
      Even though there are many problems with the game, the pros outweigh them. And most of the problems will be solved by mods, as with all of their games. Skyrim and Fallout 4 weren't particularly stable or outstanding at launch, but they're pretty damn good after years of modding. That's a big reason why they still use the Creation Engine. Because it gives unparalleled support for modders. There's even a mod out ALREADY that removes the borders of landing zones and makes the space virtually infinite.

      Remember that it’s the only one here that is in alpha state, and it’s away much better than the others even with bugs

      I've seen them walk around. One day when I wasn't doing anything, I just followed one on a Lagrange station. He just walked all around the galleria level, stopping every once in a while, to lean on the railing or sit on a chair, but most of the time they do just glitch on top of a chair.
      But that side glance the NPCs give... creepy AF.
      I can't wait until they get that completed and integrate the NPC dialog with AI. I think it will be fun to mess with them.

      @@aLovelyCookie Absolutely. I have all but Starfield, and I can't believe all the cutscenes happening just to go from one room to another, or even down a damn ladder. And the 'press X to land' made me laugh out loud. Like what? lol Then you're instantaneously on the planet - with a cutscene of the ship landing? :))

    A very simplistic comparison, Atmosphere entry wise in Star Citizen there are two methods for it. The quantum atmospheric jump that makes for quickly getting around the planet to a ground destination, and shown here which is complete manual entry.
    There's also the third method which is a bug that dooms the ship within the gravitational pull of the planet and you find yourself plummeting to the surface in your space suit spamming the medical emergency beacon before you go splat. XD

      or you QT straight through the planet lol only ever had that happen once to be fair. SC is still incredible.

      Hahaha, the third method sounds like fun. This was my first ever time playing the game. There was a quick tutorial, and then I was off. This is why it might not look super professional, but I gotta say the whole experience was amazing.

      @@GlarusGaming Definitely find yourself some companions or a beginner friendly org to help ya out in learning the ropes. It can get pretty lonely in the vast emptiness of Space.
      But all together, no matter your play style, Star Citizen gots something out there.

      You can do the same in Elite, but as the planetary bodies are much larger than in SC they probably wanted to do the quick version for elite for the purposes of the video.
