A little late but here i am. Happy new year and hope your holidays were great. Hatchets…. I have a couple hatchets to include an old estwing that was my dad’s as a kid, as well as a couple Schrade hatchets, still havent found one i love tho. I got last year a Condor Clouburst Axe (a shorter axe) i like better than all my hatchets combined. Was just looking a better hatchet solution this morning (even tho its negative temps and there is a sheet of ice everywhere. Love the leatherwork.
Hello!, Philip and happy new year. We did have nice holidays. Hope yours were good as well. Just looked up the Cloudburst. Sure does look nice. Good heavens that sounds a bit cold. Stay warm and thatnks for watching.
I use a cold steel trail hawk or a old roofers hatchet i found at the flea market for 5.00. Both have wooden handles. I use the hawk more than the other one . the head comes off and I can put it in my back pack . And it has a hammer . and you can cut the handle to fit you .
Dang this review was just a little bit late for me, I just recently purchased an SOG hatchet which I'm kind of happy with but it does have shortcomings. Nice review though!
@@wobblyotteroutdoors my main issue is probably my fault, I purchased the survival hatchet midel which a bit too light to be a great camp hatchet. Cheers!
so crazy. I just received an estwing hatched this week when my father-in-law cleaned out his parents garage. His parents passed a long time ago and much of the stuff in their garage hadn't been handled in decades. I saw this 14 inch hatchet and the handle is amazing. I almost want to hang it on the wall. Seems like it would be a sin to use it.
The estwing is better, in fact any traditional hatchet is better at being a hatchet than the ono. The primary reason being that they have more weight in the head, they'll bite deeper and split better. There's very little reason for a hatchet's cutting edge to be spread out more than 3-4 inches, it just takes away from what a hatchet does. That said, the Ono looks a lot better at splitting than a nata, which it seems to be a hybrid of an axe and a nata. The only thing you have more room for is batoning, but hatchets don't need to baton to begin with, as they split kindling size wood in 1 stroke. The ono looks nice though and I don't think it'll ever break, so that's a bonus.
Wonderful job on the leather covering!
Thank you so much @Craw. That's the first time I've made something like that. I miscut the first piece of leather. The second one worked much better.

@Grampaw Terry, I looked up the Cold Steel Trail Hawk. It looks like it can do pretty much anything you ask of it. Nice, all-purpose, quality design.
Awesome content. I’m planning to get both. Ordered the Estwing already and saving up for the ONO. ❤️ from Jasper Alberta 🇨🇦 (Liked and subscribed)
Thank you kindly, Philip! So cool that you are getting both. Appreciate the sub.
Well done. I just purchased a Fiskars splitting axe for camping (X11). That Silky ono might be the perfect companion to the Fiskars.
Thank you. Fiskars makes good stuff. The little Ono is fun to use. If you get one, I look forward to hearing what you think of it.

SOG makes beautiful hatchets. Sorry to hear it has shortcomings. Thank you for the kind words about the review.

Awesome sauce! (and condolences to the family.) Congrats on inheriting an amazing hatchet. It will serve you well, how ever you choose to use it.

I wonder how a carpenter's hatchet or tomahawk axe would compare to both of these.
That would be an interesting comparison. Might give that one a go some time.
Nice video 👍
Thank you kindly.
