The eclipse was surreal. Drove 10 hours through the night to plop myself on the side of road in SW Texas. Waited around in the humidity and flies for over two hours watching clouds pass over the sun until right before totality they parted and it was immediately so worth it. Just being a young man with my dog the empty green land of texas and the eclipse. Probably the single greatest experience I’ve ever had.
hells yeah
Sounds awesome man
Yeesh sorry you haven't had too many experiences in your life:/
@@chowderman8888Sorry you don't have wonder in your heart. Lighten up and let people enjoy unique experiences ❤️
@rubydown3329 anyone who puts down watching a total eclipse clearly hasn't seen total eclipse. ... I also saw it, my second eclipse, truly amazing ... Truly "awesome". Chowderman probably thinks Marvel Phase 4 is high art, lol/smh/lmao
Glad that Dan got to experience the total eclipse.
It is hard to convey how awesome they are through words or video.
i lived in the path of totality also my whole neighborhood was out... neighbors talking it was a wonderful celebration and brought me pure joy.
Warms my heart to think of Mara, Dan, Sam and Rachel just hanging out
Would love them to start their own Schmoedown or collaborate on something
Isn’t that just crazy that they do that??
While apparently filming the whole thing 😂
The eclipse was amazing! Drove down with family the night before to Plano, and then the next morning went on the hunt for a place where the clouds were breaking. Lucked into a perfect spot at a park in the small town of Wolfe City, TX.
Glad you guys were able to enjoy the eclipse, it was pretty spectacular!
The title reads like Godzilla is collabing with Kong & his pal Monkey Man 😅
I am really enjoying the uncanny run of Marky Mark and Sydney Sweeney being positioned on the chart so their posters are staring at each other.
Awesome to see the two greatest power couples of the Schmoedown hanging out! Glad you got front row seats for the eclipse!
Between Dune 2, Late Night with the Devil, GxK, and Monkey Man, 2024 so far is all about worms and monkeys!
Don't forget about the nuns too! 😂
You somehow forgot Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which contains the most primates. LOL
…And assuming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has a sandworm….
@@Moreiniushas it come out already?
@@menacetocommunity fall of 2024,I think...
0:20 In The Path Of Totality will make a good title for my next prog rock album.
That’s so cool you got to see the eclipse. It was too cloudy to see it in my area. I’m so glad you pointed out that the posters for “Monkey Man” and Omen look the same!!! Thanks for the charts Dan. You are awesome!
The Old Oak is about a pub owner and a Syrian refugee attempting to open a community kitchen amidst an atmosphere of prejudice, not about trying to keep the pub open. It's excellent, one of the best films of 2023
cant help but notice the eerie similarity between Monkey Man and First Omen posters. Lol
I drove to Melbourne, Arkansas, and watched the eclipse. It was spectacular. And we got really lucky and ran into a bunch of guys that had some massive telescopes, and got to see the solar flares and everything.
I drove to Hot Springs with my kid from where they live with my ex in LA. It was my first time in Arkansas and I was pleasantly surprised. I saw totality 7 years ago in SC and both times were just amazing. An absolutely indescribable experience.
Oh, and afterward we hit up a local theater to catch Dune 2. My kid hadn’t see it yet, it was my 3rd viewing. I even forgot that the first scene is durning an eclipse. 😁
So many monkey movies this year. If a certain wise old turtle saw this, he would say the following...
"Mmm, monke"
and
"There are no accidents"
Gorilla =/= monke
I *just* finished my yoga! I thought "oh well, no soothing Dan voice" and *then* you upload, oh well
The Inglorious One and The Crusher!! So great to you all together, such power couples! Gosh, if Samm & Rachel were a team, Shazam would've seen some trouble lol. Gosh I miss Schmoedown
Caught Monkey Man and First Omen yesterday, I can say I liked Monkey Man more than 'Kong... but let's see what happens with Planet of the Apes in the whole Primate themed films this year.
I was lucky enough to essentially be on the X of where the last eclipse and this one passed in Illinois so I had a pretty good view of both. Definitely a cool experience
A couple of days late, but I'm here for the charts! Glad you got to catch thr eclipse. I also live in tha path of totality and got to share the experience with friends who traveled to see it. So amazing!
Seeing Dan watching the eclipse dressed the usual way he does was… shocking to me
How did you think I dressed, haha?
19:40 I remember the Lost In Space movie, but mainly because I saw it in the cinema.
Not a great film, but I did like the re-mix of the original theme song.
Playing this like a radio show whilst I clean the house. Informative & calming. *Hoping to make it to Monkey Man, or Kung-Fu Panda 4 this weekend.
Brilliant video as always Dan!
I also live in what was totality. My husband and I went to a nearby park to watch it. It was amazing to see it with a crowd. Every cheered when it got pitch black and cheered as it got light again. But the most interesting thing was the wildlife.
This was my 2nd stand in the path of totality and it was glorious
To comment or not to comment, that is the question the algorithm poses
Scream 2 dethroned Titanic half way through its run for one weekend in Australia. Probably the week of going to the cinema I remember most fondly.
I saw Titanic twice, and Scream 2 back to back that weekend and it was absolute madness.
The independent theatre I used to attend wasn’t opposed to oversell tickets to people so eager to see Scream 2 they happily payed to lay down the front and fill the aisles with people using the steps as seats.
Both classics in my book!
Dan's puns are on fire today 🔥
Nice one with the eclipses
Love the Charts video!
Was only 8 at the the time but I remember that ridiculous run by titanic. Four records I don’t see ever being broken , the force awakens domestic total, Endgame’s opening weekend , avatar’s ww gross and titanic’s fabled 15 week no.1 run
The equivalent of Grease in 1998 would be the 20th Anniversary of musicals of 2004. *Phantom of the Opera, Polar Express, Mulan 2, or Barbie - Princess & the Pauper.
In the end monkey man from a review standpoint. Monkey man starts out a little slow but the pay off is amazing.😊
Super interesting to see these stats, love it. Keep em coming Dan
Props to that thumbnail Dan! Made me chuckle when I saw it!
Always enjoyable! Been following your work since Screen Junkies
So great that you and Mara could host friends for some eclipse watching, right at home! I was only able to see a partial view, but hope to catch the total in 2044.
I didn't really want to drive that far but maybe I should. I would feel lucky to be alive in 20 years!
I went to see that 1998 rerelease of “Grease”! It was totally new to me at the time.
Hey Dan, I'd still love for there to be a domestic/international split number added to the Worldwide Weekend chart. It's always interesting to see where the bulk of a movie's gross is coming from and where it's being more successful, and a quick line like "(65% international)" below the worldwide weekend grosses would communicate this rather efficiently, instead of having to skip back and forth between the international and worldwide charts to compare the numbers.
Surely the plural of Bigfoot is Bigfoots, right? I've never considered this. Now it puzzles me deeply.
Very excited to see some of the limited release movies-- La Chimera, People's Joker, Hundreds of Beavers --roll out a bit. April is shaping up to be a pretty great month for movies even the box office might not always deliver.
BIGFEET!
Would have bet everything that Dan was going to comment on the similarity in the posters for MM and TFO
Thank you for the video
I only saw Lost In Space because it came free with a package of 5 dvd's when you bought a DVD player.
It always looks like Wahlberg and Sweeney are looking at each other.
It's a shame that Dune 2 looks like it's going to just miss out on hitting $700m worldwide :( Expected Godzilla x Kong given its very good audience scores to have slightly
It opened higher than expected. So the drop is relative.
@@thedarkemissary But even so, its audience scores usually indicate a
I think it will reach $700m worldwide, especially with it starting to re-enter IMAX and other premium formats after temporarily being kicked out for Godzilla x Kong. It has been consistently seeing a drop of about 30% each week for the last few weeks (and at this stage in its runtime, it is likely to stay at that rate if not improve with the premium format reopening), and if it holds at that rate it will only take another 6 weeks to reach $700m, and I think that is likely. I don’t think it will stay in theaters as long as Oppenheimer, but I think it will stay for at least 2 more months, if not longer. Now it almost certainly won’t reach $750m, but $700m is likely and an incredible achievement for this type of movie.
@@jadencasto It made roughly $18.5m worldwide in its 6th wkend, will need roughly another $35m to get to $700m worldwide, will be tight! Rooting for it!
@@AllInTheGame01 the day on day drop in its opening weekend showed that GxK was quite frontloaded, way more than Dune 2, even though the overall first weekend was similar. I was expecting a >60% drop and I actually believe that good scores helped GxK to have a 60ish% drop instead of a 65ish
15:15 The Old Oak (which I saw when it came out here in the UK last year) is about a bit more than just a guy trying to keep a local pub open - it's also about refugees in the UK and social attitudes around them, with the protagonist trying to recapture the community spirit from when the town was a coal mining town.
Interesting to see it get any release in the USA - no doubt the MAGA brigade would see it as "woke" or even Communist (the protagonist, gasp, is a "union man").
Holly cow the Boy and Heron is back, that is seriously cool, also happy but sad GXK drop that much but still keep doing money, hope next week be a better hold.
It was a brilliant business decision for “The Boy and the Heron” to have their official Chinese release date, during the Qingming Festival. The Chinese holiday basically translates to “Ancestor’s Day” in which families visit the gravesites of their deceased relatives and loved ones to pay their respects and spend the entire day together as a family, doing whatever fun activities, which includes going to the movies together. Themes regarding death of a family member, respect for the elderly, and preserving one family’s legacy made “The Boy and the Heron” the perfect movie for families to spend time together during the Qingming Festival holiday!
I'm slightly curious, how could No More Bets be a new entry onto the Worldwide Box Office 365 Chart, and move down one spot at the same time?
I went to see grease twice in it’s opening week in 1978. The first time it was a great experience for the entire audience. The second time not so much and I think it was because a couple of people laughed at the beginning of summer nights breaking everyone’s suspension of disbelief. I would go to see the 50th anniversary release in four years if there is one.
Love u Dan
It's been some time - but I finally saw Emily the Criminal - because you recommended it. Thank you! Really enjoy your take on all things movie magic. Kudos*
Very fascinating that Dune: Part Two had a stronger hold than Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire!
Of all the reasons that we don't get the best, most complete charts, I never thought that we'd be blaming the sun
Dan, you will experience another eclipse in Arkansas in 2045.
Surprising that Grease's re-release earned $54 million inflation-adjusted. I wonder if they decided to do it after the Star Wars re-releases in 1997 were such massive hits
I like these more concise charts videos. I'd much rather they stay like this with separate supplementary videos maybe released the following day when Dan feels a deeper dive on a topic is warranted. YMMV.
The eclipse killed the Monday box office should be better Tuesday
Charts with Dan fucking rules
Thank you!
🇿🇦 I know you probably do it in your records but you needed to show us the graphic of Super Mario Bros going on your list of movies that were on the TOP 10 for the entire 365 days.
Cool video
we must watch the godzilla x kong its required ❤
GxK is already about to break 400M worldwide. It is dominating.
1:20 The posters for Monkey Man and The Final Omen look very alike. Coming soon: Monkey Omen?
Edit: I see I wasn't the only one to notice this.
Wow so Wonka made over 600 million on a budget of 125 million and only profited 56 million in theatres. Does that mean most movies don’t earn a profit in theatres?
02:23 and both took it from the crow(1994)movie poster
Afterlife was a delight. Frozen Empire was just ok. Thus the divergence.
Wow that’s a super disappointing Flashback weekend: a re-release of Grease, I guess cashing in on Travolta in primary colors- which was not good. Who remembers mercury rising and lost in space? I can’t believe it overtook Titanic craziness.
We *need* a Godzilla X Kong X Monkey Man crossover.
Do we tho?
So Wonka really easily could’ve been a disaster
Nothing illustrates runaway inflation like Lost in Space being a $100 million movie in 2024 dollars.
Meh.
$70 million to an adjusted $131 million in 26 years isn't that crazy to me. Not that inflation isn't an issue, but inflation always goes up with time. People in the 60s and 70s were panicking about inflation about as much as people are today.
@@WaffleEBay12 Dude, I know - I was born in the 80s. I vividly remember that movie being a financial failure. Just goes to show that $100M box office isn't necessarily the achievement it once was.
I didn't intend to but I did see Godzilla Kong and then Monkey Man back to back. Dev Patel was the better kong in combat yeah.
It's weird that 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' is really bucking the trend here in the UK compared to everywhere else. It actually passed the total gross of 'Afterlife' this weekend and will pass the original (non-adjusted) total of the original 'Ghostbusters' this week to become the biggest Ghostbusters film in the franchise history over here!
Was the UK a big market for the various Ghostbusters cartoons? I've heard reviews that Frozen Empire is a bit like several episodes of the Real Ghostbusters or Extreme Ghostbusters glued together.
Personally, I'd like to see a giant slash of ticket prices. Sounds simple and maybe stupid, but if movies were cheaper, more people would go.
That Kung Fu Panda is a money-making machine... 💰
I’m actually sad that King of the Monsters is the lowest grossing film of the Legendary Monsterverse; it was my favorite
Monkey Man and First Omen deserved more.
14:29 are the per theater averages over the 3 days, or a daily average?
Great episode as always, although this time it makes me wonder some things:
Wouldn't the Mario movie have earned a spot in Dan's 365 Days Top 10 Hall of Fame?
Is Dan going to bring back the arthouse cinema honoring section?
Is Dan going to bring back the "Toni Collette needs an oscar for her role in Hereditary" request line?
Jokes aside, what do you think of the performance of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire? It seems like it's box office earning has stagnated overall.
Ghostbusters frozen empire, sadly will not to go $100 million domestically by the end of it’s run.
The next kong is being switched to a kangaroo, tilted king kangaroo (the new genderation)...
I fucking LOVE the lost in space movie!!
I liked lost in space movie. I wish they would’ve continued that series.
Hey Dan, your numbers for the chinese movies don't add up with the Maoyan gross (YOLO=497M USD, Pegasus=483M USD, Article 20=346M USD, Boonie Bears: Time Twist= 281M USD) and the Maoyan gross also matches Luiz Fernando numbers on his Twitter so i just wanted to ask if you may forgot to update these Box office results
I use several different sites to check numbers - particularly with international films, those numbers often don't match and I have to pick one for the show. They generally tend to settle correctly in the end.
I see what you did there.
What's your letterboxd?
"If you know the Schmoedown, you probably know Samm Levine."
Or, you know, Inglourious Basterds hahaha
Re the eclipse, I think it’s great if you happen to be in the path like you were and get to enjoy it as something special, but as someone who also experienced it, it is not worth spending thousands of dollars to travel for and make an event out of, because there can be a lot of environmental destruction associated with the places that people travel to and gather en masse to view. Also, lunar eclipses are also very cool, more frequent, and easier to view.
I'm sure everyone's experience may vary, but I found it to be something far beyond any description. It's a moment I'll never forget and I would/will likely travel to see one again in my lifetime. They're so infrequent that I would hope that any side effects wouldn't have ruinous long term consequences.
@@DanMurrellMovies - of course, just beware you may see some really upsetting things with environmental destruction. The last one in oregon was terrible. Volunteers had to clean the mess for weeks after and pieces of land were completely destroyed by humans. It doesnt seem upstate new york was affected the same way this time. I just really hope local municipalities figure out a way to manage these things better to prevent that scenario in the future, because it was one of the most upsetting things I ever saw and completely 'eclipsed' the eclipse for me in significance. Good job on the breakdowns!
Sam Levine .married Rachel Cushing?!? Well congrats!
I sit here every Tuesday morning refreshing your page until this video pops up, I was starting to worry!
I think I still got it uploaded at the usual time, but I appreciate your concern!
@@DanMurrellMovies I'm just joking around, I appreciate you still getting this out after taking some time out for the eclipse
Yeet yeet
Not that Sony actually learn from mistakes, but I hope they really re-examine this franchise and the direction they're trying to take it. It's not working. We didn't need the Ghostbusters to become a family business. The last movie and the family angle worked fine... but we didn't need that to continue. The franchise works best with a juxtaposition of adults and fantastical storylines. They already have Paul Rudd, great, wonderful, now select 3 other comedic actors... there's plenty of great comedic actors to choose from.
...I'm honestly not even sure what you say could work. It just seems like the franchise has stagnated and struggled with resonating with the international audience overall.
@@manuelalbertoromero9528 .... yeah based off of how it's currently being presented... which is why I said what I said.
The appeal of the first movies was the balance between adults (lead by comedic geniuses with star power) and the fantastical element of ghosts. That drew people in. No one asked for this family stuff beyond the last movie which made perfect sense why the family dynamic was at play. That was fine for that. Now, lets get back to what made it great to begin with.
Shame that Monkey Man under preformed. Its action the only genre general audiences like.
Wow, Liam Neeson has really fallen off these days. The dude is doing C level movies.
Monke 🐒
Nah the eclipse was mid
Yo Dan, how you not going to mention it was a holiday weekend in China and The Boy and the Heron made $73 million in 5 days?!
I did mention it

He did mentioned it but the charts he posted are only for the 3-day weekend.
