My cabin had a little 2 circuit fuse box, it had a handle that had to be down to open it which was a hazard as it was never grounded lol. It was fed with a piece of 10/3 wire from a 20amp double breaker in my main breaker box. One of the fuses recently burned out and when I saw they were $6-7 now I just replaced the whole box with a little Square D 30amp 2-circuit load center and a 15amp 2-pole circuit breaker. I had to go 15amp because the wiring in the walls is 14ga. I splurged and even added the little ground bus bar. Those old screw-in fuses are expensive now!
I like your video, explained very well, question though an old homes, if there is no earth ground do you have to install it and/or where do you ground your installation?
I have a 100 amp fuse panel that has some circuits/ fuses removed that arnt being used yet others have double lines running to them Can an electrician come in and sort it out by removing the double lines running to them and spreading some out to the unused fuse spots? I’m positive a lot of them are not being used or do I have to upgrade to a breaker panel first? I’m not blowing fuses and have the correct size fuses and I’m not in need of more power I would just like to sort out the panel I also have 3 circuits that are nob and tube which I don’t use any of the receptacles from these , I would like to disconnect these from the panel and run new romex and receptacles to the areas of the house that have the nob and tube receptacles I’m not using I’m completely lost and getting conflicting advice on what’s mandatory any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Just looking for your recommendation for dealing with abandoned wiring. I get different opinions from different electricians I've talked to. Some say all abandoned wiring must be removed. Some say to try to find both ends and wirenut them off separately, in a dedicated junction box labeled DEAD, and still other's recommended to find both ends of the cable, stripping the ends and wire nut the hot, neutral and ground together at both ends, put them in a junction box marked DEAD, so if someone later on decides to reconnect the circuit at either end, the result is a dead short and tripped breakers, warning the homeowner to a problem.
Thanks for the tutorial! Im wondering if it is acceptable to mount a main panel inverted. For instance a new Leviton panel that says bottom feed. thanks!
Just moved into an old house with 2 fuse box panels, not sure how to deal with them, all outlets are only 2 pronged,so im.also concerned about wiring needing redone, how can you tell when replacing a panel to a breaker box if you should have wiring redone?
If I two electric meters would I have two fuse boxes. I have a separate electrical supply for my ac unit but I can't seen to find and breaker for the ac unit in the one fuse box I can find.
Fuse boxes are never terribly hidden. It's either shared with another fuse, mislabeled, or somebody broke the law during construction and didn't add one.
Awesome video. Just curious, any idea of the date the home was built/wired.? The main fuses look like 100 to 200 amp, which was very large for a fuse panel because most of the fuse panels i have run into are your typical main/range pull out with your 4 branch circuits, typically 60 amps, because by the late 50s or so when we started getting into 100 amp or 125 amp services, breaker boxes were beginning to completely replace the fuse panels. I've never seen a panel like that. Something that could be donated to a museum or exhibit. 😉
Great question! You are correct originally they had very small services 40/60 amps I've seen them with lighting only. And then they Incorporated the range later on. I would say this house was built in the 50s, our area held on to the fuse box for a long time. I've seen them as late as the '70s. Great comment thank you!
very smart to tape up that death trap panel cover. I CANT BELIEVE you have to play operation when putting that thing back on.
I’m no electrician but this was very informative and educational. Thank you for sharing.
Let's go! Thank you!
I like the job nice and clean I’m a electrician from 2000 to the present 👍🏽
Appreciate that bro! Keep grinding!
OMG! I didn't even know they made units like that! to have a 200 main fuse pull! wow! that must have been quite a job to upgrade the system!
I know it bro it was quite the panel!
@@ElectricalCodeChanges did you save it? something like that is quite collectable!
I have one just like this and has worked perfect for 60 years... ; ))
Awesome. Thanks for this video.
Great video as always and thanx!
Thank you!!
That must be either a commercial property or a huge house 🏘️ those are tons and tons of lines 😎

Completely removing, or properly junction boxing and perhaps labeling are all acceptable methods.
I have seen many old fuse panels, but I have never seen this.

I have knob and tube wiring. I need to upgrade. Do you have a video?
Are you talking all them cabinets doors off? Thanks
Great question! You would not be required to move the doors as long as they opened. It would be the equivalent of having the door on a room.
How much would it cost upgrade that? I got a smaller one with 6 fuses in it and wanted to update to new fuse box
My cousin is an electrician he said around 5k the most
Coach, your comments about the range wiring and as I watched there did not appear to be an equipment ground. What did I miss?
Hey buddy pretty nice video I got some questions how can I get in touch with you
I’m looking into buying a duplex that needs its fuse panels converted to breaker. It was good watching this for entertainment reasons
Save them neat for display
The old fuses are the best fuses
how can you tell how many amps the main fuse pull is?

What year is the home?
A good electrician can pull out a receptacle and see the wire gauge. They will know if it's appropriate.
Why did you tape the white ones black? I thought white is neutral
How do you know the amperage of each wire? Did you label them?
You go by wire gauge.

how much would this cost to have an electrician do?
You didn't have to use any arc fault breakers in that panel
Great Question!! When you are doing a panel change only. Then you do not have to arc fault.
@@ElectricalCodeChanges Or if you are in Michigan, you don't have to use them for even a new service.
Great content bro 👍⚡
Any clips on properly removing broken fuses or rejection adapters from the seating?
