    Can you do the test at 300ft traveling 35mph? I think is important to consider forward movement and the weight of the drone to determine how much speed is reduced before 6’ to prevent killing someone.

    Great job! Question: does NAV Canada and/or FAA (USA) deem a drone equipped with a Manti devise safe enough to allow it to fly over people? Ed W. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

      The FAA does not. Categories are defined as needing approval from the FAA. A parachute might be required as part of a categorization process, but the parachute alone does not make it legal to fly over people.

      @@PilotInstitute Thank you for your reply. So, if the Manti is only useful to prevent your DJI drone from crashing then it would that it would more economical to get DJI’s care refresh insurance would it not? And if you already have DJI’s care refresh insurance why spend the extra money on a Manti, if in the eyes of the FAA and/or NAV Canada it doesn’t improve safety when flying your drone over people?

      @@PilotInstitute Actually the Mantis3 Plus is approved by Transports Canada for flying near and over people for the Mavic, Phantom and M300/30 series. You have to reregistered your drone accordingly

    How long do you think it will be before DJI includes or offers a build in parachute recover system? Since it would be electronically synchronized with the onboard sensors, it could deploy much faster and more reliably than a stand alone third party device??? 🤔

      This would require an isolated and redundant power supply as if the system rely on the drone power grid, it may not deploy in case of a catastrophic drone power failure

    Great video. Thanks. I think you should call the dummy drone Black Hawk.
    Can you do a review on drone insurance? I am looking into getting a third party insurance for my when I get my mini 3 instead of dji care.

    Imagine a sensor error causes this thing to deploy while you're flying. If it happens there's literally nowhere for the parachute and strings to go but get tangled up in the props and you're guaranteed to crash at that point. Better not descend your drone too fast with this thing attached.

    Interesting, but if you can’t test the impact force (in Joules) and real speed, these parachute without homologation needs seven documented tempts to be a legal asset based in SORA methodology. It’s not easy, we need to spend a lot of money & take several risk with our drones, to be ok with regulations.

      We had a tool on there to measure impact forces but unfortunately it did not function properly. We are waiting for more charges to do more testing, this time with an FPV drone.

    Why do they insist on the parachute being so un-parachute like? I don't like the swinging from side to side as it descends. This is caused by the design of the Chute. As it fills with air it (the air) has nowhere to do, so it spills out of the chute and this is why the drone gets that swing going. All they had to do was put a hole in the center of the chute to allow the air to escape. That swing could cause more damage than that caused by the drone hitting the ground. If a person was in the way the drone landing on his head is bad enough but with that swing it could cause more injury, especially if a prop hit him in the eye. The odds of this happening are slim, but Murphy's law says the worse will always happen. I'd also advise the unit be installed at the drones center of Gravity. A drone landing with one end hanging lower is more inclined to damage props and drone arms. Landing flat is better. Trying to find the C of G is easy enough, but when it's found that strap may cover s sensor. If this happens use a small square of double sided adhesive tape between the sensors and place the strap so the tape keeps it in place. Should you find the box moves when flying them a small piece of tape under it will anchor it in place. By the way, the prices on these units have tumbled. I can now buy the Mantis 3 for just over $50 Australian. (around $35 USD.)

      Some airplanes actually have ballistic parachutes, the Cirrus is famous for it.
