Fox names: Megan (fox) 20th century (fox) Mozilla Fire (fox) (Fox) Mulder Jamie (fox) (Foxy) Brown (foxxy) cleopatra (Fox) racing. Cub was interested in the tcg bracket board for his museum. What if when you do the new tournament instead of total elimination you have people who have lost play each other for ranking. Sometimes a really good player gets bad draws. This would give everyone who lost more chances to place higher. I’m not sure what it’s called but they do it in the Olympics. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone use birch logs successfully”-sad gem noises.
I just knew Beef would forget about the new signs feature. I'm guessing that there will be hermits still discovering this feature for the next year or two. And writing on the backs of signs... I think just about everyone is going to forget that's an option.
Grian finally starts participating in tcg makes me really happy tbh. He’s a plotting character for sure so it’d be super interesting to see how far he can go
I think an 8 person playoff sounds perfect for a 14 player league. 26 games for the regular season insures everyone gets plenty of game time and then the top qualifiers battle it out to see who is the best.
Every time I see underground (activated) redstone covered up, I get flashbacks to Etho on the Mindcrack server when he started placing TNT at random and one went off. :D
I like the idea, but I was thinking to make it like a hybrid, everyone play 3 games against each hermit, first one doesn't count for playoff, the other two do but you have to play all hermits once before you start the bracket season. I am saying this because Grian is far behind everyone at this point. I'm glad to see him playing but he's very far behind the curve. It'll help him get some coins to buy packs so can at least be competitive, assuming he hasn't played much and has few card options.
Name suggestion for the fox: Pooka Of course named after the one and only fox, @th3pooka, the amazing animator who has brought life to Hermitcraft songs toghether with Elybeatmaker and Jono, such as "Mumbo Jumbo, you are AFK" and "Order of Octa". Also frequently employed by Impulse and Skizzleman.
I think now that the server has been updated to 1.20 you should change the board and use hanging signs in their three different poses, instead of signs on slabs, it'd let the gradient background a bit more visible too
8 Person Bracket seems good - and having the anti-tournement with the bottom 8 would also be fun. (Yes, I know that means someone could theoretically win both, that's a feature).
@vintagebeef What about a double elimination bracket? Top 10 gets into winners bracket, and the other 4 go directly to losers bracket. There are a ton of generators online. But I think Double Elimination gives you incentive enough to place better, without the treat of immediate elimination over you.
To break up the long line of signs you should switch the players name with their head. Gives a little pop and easier to see when the signs are up so high. Either that or make the sign 4 columns so its easier to go up and read.
Unless this video was recorded before the update to 1.20, the signs can be edited by right clicking it (of course without crouching). That means you shouldn't need to bring new glow ink every time you update the board, because you shouldn't have to destroy the signs in order to update them.
It’s so cool to see TCG continue through the season. I love watching the game evolve and casual matches make great binge content/streams. If things go into a third tournament/season of TCG it might be fun to have a new players league for hermits who have had less play experience and tokens to build their decks.
I think top 8 would be good. Signs are now editable, that should make changing them easier, as long as someone doesn't decide to troll you and wax all the signs.
HC9 hasn’t been updated to the latest version of minecraft with editable signs and probably won’t be for a while, as it’s quite a big thing to update a server to new version updates. This would be such a perfect use case for them though, hopefully Beef won’t get too many flashbacks when he does come to edit signs in 1.20
What you could do for placement is the top 7 (half of the hermits) automatically make it to the quarter-finals the remaining 7 play a qualifiers tournament. Only the top 1 of the qualifiers make it to the quarter-finals. This leaves 8 players for QF, 4 for SF, and 2 for the Finals.
I’ve always loved birch! Especially after the stripped logs too. Helps that’s I’ve always loved the birch forest, not cause I’m a builder no, I understand builders not enjoying the biome color and the leaves and logs everywhere, but I love it as a change from the other older biomes while just playing the game, and it’s easy to travel there
Seeing as the server has been updated to 1.20, you'll be able to edit the signs just by right clicking them. So you hopefully won't need to redo the glow ink and dyes too much.
I think having a winner / loser bracket could be fun - this would mean that not only you'll play the regular season for qualification, but also that good seeding will give you a second shot while a bad seeding will place you directly in loser bracket. Also it can help with the sometimes aspect of "random" in card games, if you lose once you can try to come back. Also who doesn't love a story of someone in the loser bracket coming back to win it all ? You can qualify top 4 in winner bracket and 5 to 8 in loser, or even 8 in winner bracket and 9 - 12 in loser, or any other combination
For the gradient to work better, maybe put the logs at the top sideways so that the texture on the wool isn't perpendicular to the logs? Also, don't let Gem hear your birch log slander.
You can always handicap the tournament game based on rank (i.e. lower ranks start with lower life on their first Hermit, higher ranks start with an extra card, etc.).
the gradient came out pretty well! I'd just suggest peppering some of the other colors at the edges so it isn't solid blobs up against each other but a little bit of dithering at the edge
I think for the playoffs, the top six automatically qualify and reserve two spots for a wildcard. Then the wildcards are determined by a smaller tournament where the two best qualify. This is an idea I’ve wanted to see in the NHL but I think this can work here. Love TCG and the amount of hype this game has! Looking forward for Season 2!
Bdubs kinda has a class on gradients in his current building with bdubs series, as so far as making shapes on a flat surface goes ... It also sounds like you need to look at bdubs' builds at spawn. Lots of diorite, and a tree made of birch logs
Guy; Vivica; Emilia Edit: I’m really enjoying the Starblight Desert CTM vids! Such a throwback, especially when I’ve rewatched many of the original Team Canada CTMs over the last couple years.
If you're color coding names, the top 6 should be one color, and the two at the bottom of the top 8 (at risk of dropping out of top 8) should be another color, then everyone else. And adding in player heads is also probably a better way to indicate players, although you could make a ranking "totem pole" separate that accomplishes all this and leaves the board as just a data display.
Hey Beef, An idea could be to have a qualifier round for the main tourney. The top 4 in the season don't have to have to play in the qualifier to be in the tourney. The numbers are for an example only and can be tweaked to the number of participants.
Imagine if Spiders in real life made sounds like in Minecraft.. You get in bed, close you eyes, ready to sleep and all the sudden this beastly creature is hissing and spitting from the corner of the room .. LOL Would be the most horrific thing ever hahah
Numbered banners might be an easier way to update standings instead of using so much glow ink. Wrigley Field/Fenway style. Of course you’d probably have to make the board larger. Especially if your 1.20 update is still a ways off.
I think if you do an 8 player tourney at the end of season, you should have the top 8 names in lime dye and the bottom 6 in red dye, to show the seed needed to make the tourney
You could do all 14 players make the tournament but the Top 2 get byes for the first round while the remaining 12 fight in a single elimination style tournament. Or Top 10 with a double elimination rule which to me would make the most sense
You could do it like the nba does where the first 6 spots advance directly to the playoffs and the 7th to 10th place play play-in games for the 7th and 8th spot
I think everyone that wants to should be able to participate in the tournament. Like yeah, making the tournament an incentive sounds exciting, but you never know if someone will have smth happen irl so they can't properly participate in the season... Also I hope for your sanity that the Minecraft update and the ability to edit signs will be implemented in the server soon lol
When it comes to who makes it into the S2 tournament, you could make it so the *Top 7* get in, with the 8th spot being a wildcard. The wildcard being randomly determined by essentially pulling a name out of a hat, with how many wins being how many entries a particular hermit gets. Alternately, you could have the bottom 7 vote for who should represent them in the tournament, giving them someone to root for,
If you want a cool narative for the tournament I would recomend a king of the hill format, basically the pplayer who finishes 8th go up against the one who finished 7th and then the winner of that meets the one who finished 6th and so on with the winner of regular season as kinda like a final boss. The downsides may be that less games will be played and may flop if nobody upsets but I personally love how that format builds a narrative during the tournament aswell as rewarding regular season preformance
Trophy idea: While you continue to do the World Series trophy for the tournament champion maybe make a copy of the premier league cup as the regular season champion(as that’s how the EPL decides it’s season champion). The premier league cup also adds ribbons with the champions colors on the handles. Doing something similar could add uniqueness to individual trophies, which would also incentivize Cub and Cleo to collect all of the trophies for their museums instead of only one. I also imagine this would make Jevin’s trophy incredibly valuable as it would look completely different from all other regular season trophies.
add wild cards/play-ins, a strict 8 almost guarantees the very bottom players give up near EOS. wild card means middle seeded players are fighting to stay out of playing an extra playoff game, and bottom players are still fighting to get into wild card. it keeps everyone involved the whole way and makes end of season stories climatic. mid-season tournament can also be good idea. allows players to realize the importance of their current standing and get a taste of playoff stakes. it can inspire them to change things up for the last half and give you an opportunity to add new rules/cards to refresh the gameplay or balance things
If you want playoffs with everyone you could make a winners bracket with the top 4 of where they don't have to fight more games and if they lose they get dropped into the lower bracket. (This idea comes from LEC, League of Legends in Europa format)
I would much prefer if there was a regular season and a tournament. Plus a bonus idea, if the regular season champion and the tournament champion are two different people(so it's not the same person that won both things) there must be a match between the two to prove who is the best, let's call it The Match of Champions
"I should have spoken to bdoubleO about gradients" *bdubs logs* "What are the odds?" Honestly not that bad, you're both in North America and play hermitcraft as your main job. What's really crazy is when one of the NA players mention doc and he's online, which is A LOT, I swear doc doesn't even sleep when he's excited about a build lol. He's about 6 hours away in time difference from the NA players, yet I swear he cameos more with NA players than the other EU players lmao
Since hermitcraft is in 1.20 now, you can just right-click on the signs to edit them rather than having to break them every time. Might be a bit easier when you’re updating the brackets!
You could let everyone into the bracketed tournament, but give the top players a natural advantage. So the first brackets would be 1vs14, 2vs13, 3vs12 etc. Theoretically the lowest ranked going into the tournament will get knocked out the quickest, and the highest ranked will have an easier time. Middling players will just be facing other middling players, and it will get more and more competitive and close the closer to finals. You could also set it up with more matches and have a two loss and you're out scheme. The first round of matches, winners go to winner bracket losers go to losing bracket (by rankings, theoretically the winners should be the top 8). If you lose in the winning bracket, you drop to the losers bracket. Loser in the losers' bracket, and you're out completely. So the finals will be someone who won every game in the winners' bracket vs someone who only lost one game. It also means weak players aren't out right away, and its a little more forgiving on really unlucky matches. But, it is more matches. FRC 2023 did their competitions this way. I don't think only playing the top 8 is as interesting, because the lowest ranked players might lose interest/stop playing before the final tournament because they know they don't have a chance at getting in. But, if you could rise from 10 to 9, that means your first match is against rank 6 instead of rank 5, which is worth competing for.
You definitely need “20th Century” and “Megan”.
