Probably my favorite Mellotron use by Tony was in Englangled and Los Endos(at the end of song) in the choir mode. In Entangled, played with the ARP Pro Soloist..its otherworldly. I tear up every time I play the song. The end of Los Endos..the Mellotron also in choir mode just almost takes over the tune..also otherworldly. Just fantastic!!
Thanks for the fascinating story! As longtime lovers of the sound of the Mellotron (Craig's 1st musical instrument was his M400) our philosophy is... "There is no such thing as too much Mellotron". We have the M400 (W/4 tape frames) an M4000D (the big one), and two Mellotron Micro's. We also used several Mellotron Apps on our 1st album. Long live the Mellotron! And thank you Harry Chamberlin for your amazing creation.
King Crimson was hugely into the fantastic Mellotron, infact Robert Fripp sold Tony Banks one of his Mellotrons before Genesis did their "Nursery Cryme" album !! So the Mellotron that was used on King Crimson's Prog Classic "In the Court of the Crimson King" was now being played by Tony !!! 👍🎶🎹🎼✌
Some friends had the wherewithal to purchase a Mellotron in 1973 for the Genesis songs they played in their shows. Customs had set it aside for a search when it arrived in Philadelphia. Apparently they thought it looked like an ideal place to hide drugs, so they wanted to have a look. I looked inside with fascination at all of those tape heads in a row, and the pieces of tape with the spools and the springs. It was awesome to hear the sounds of Strawberry Fields coming out of that machine when Michael demonstrated how it worked.
the sound of Watcher of the Skies is the MK2 Violins mixed around 50/50 with the MK2 Brass patch. it's then sent to a Leslie with a slow rotation, then a reverb.
Man >>>> this is very impressive stuff , your mellotron sound and the cords your played are identical to all the Genesis songs you mentioned and even played. I bet only Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks would be impressed with you. You could have joined Genesis easily your Mellotron playing skills.
Tony Banks was the master of the mellotron. He was the one guy who somehow kept in playing in tune... It's just a pity that he later completely undid it. I mean, just listen to the 3SL version of The Cinema Show with the mellotron lacking...! You can't do that, for crying out loud (to cite two other famous tracks by other people 😉)...
Great thancks to Mike Pinder of thé moodies ,HE IS responsible for his popularity by HIS UNIQUE USE ,none was able to play liké hé did ,too hé développed this machine to hide many of his default électro mechanical workings.
A musician who talk of mellotrons and spoke as usual of thé Beatles and moré he named toô Mike Pinder , the only one to use correctly the mk2.....with Banks,Mc Donald , and only two others...his keys did "reproducéd " à tron sounds but it lacks all the mécanics defaults...this like playing hammond sounds (A, B,C....)without ...tone wheels...all in all he do knows what he was talking about ...
Yes, I was going to ask this - with TB (and I guess a lot of other rock musicians) it's often the combination of effects used that give it the particular interesting sounds...

YES!!!!!
Entangled was phenomenal!
@@tommyrawlings3046 is the Englangled Untangled
I, like you, tear up too 😢

What a blessing!
Fripp had 3 MKII's. Court, Poseidon and Lizard. They brought 2 or 3 with them on the USA tour. One was destroyed in a fire in Chicago...

Brilliant
Rick Wakeman also did a great job on the Mellotron on And You And I.
Rocks melotron sou d it totally different.
@@amonster8mymother isnt Genesis "rock"?
@@Kiwigeo-g3o it was progressive rock and it turned into contemporary pop.
Did I write that? Really???
Magnifico
Thank you very much. Lovely insight into my all time favourite band.
Thank you for giving us more information! I love the Mellotron, my favorite instrument!
Thanks, Howard great to see these wonderful Mellotrons and to have them demonstrated.

Mellotron je nádherný nástroj.Nejvíc ho používali Genesis-Banks,King Crimson-Fripp,Yes-Wakemann a mnoho dalších.
I've got a couple of tron sounds but not the famous mixed chorus.
PERFECT..... TIME MACHINE!! Kudos
I’m ignorant. How does one play Entangled or other pieces? Is there sheet music?
Great video!
There is mention of Mellotron on 'Trespass' from 1970 (On 'Visions of Angels")- a year before Nursery Cryme. So where did that come from ?
Studio mellotron on Trespass
I've got the watcher sound sampled.
Thank you. I've spent a lot of time trying to track down that haunting sound in "Afterglow". Now, I know.
3:55 Tony Banks actually put the mellotron through a Lesile to generate the unique sound....
J'aurais aimé qu'il nous joue Entangled...

A sound is only as good as the music written for it.
Very nice video thank you - may i ask please how do i get the sound of the lead synth Tony uses in hairless heart?
I have always wondered if there would have even been a such thing as progressive rock if the Mellotron had never been invented.
It would have been very different, for sure, but a lot of bands didn't use them, including ELP and most of the Canterbury bands.

Using internal reverb in memotron
Thanks! Great Reverb!

I so t have the string sound.
The choir sounds on the emulator are really nice but not really tape samples.
Vangelis used this instrument, especially in It’s five o’clock
What are you using to get those mellotron sounds a sampler?
A Memotron Rack!
Correct memotron rack
Good job but how about woolly bully watch it now 😮
Question, are you using an external reverb? Or is it the Memotron reverb?
Thanks
Yes, I was going to ask this

Memotron internal reverb
By far: the greatest virtuoso of the Mellotron was Rick Wakeman with Yes. Others are not even close.
