FULL VERSION Sampras vs Agassi 1995 US Open

- This was the match to not only determine the 1995 US Open champion, but the no. 1 ranking for the year. Agassi had won the Australian Open and Sampras had won Wimbledon.
On a windy day in New York, there are some sporadic good rallies in the 1st set, but Sampras eventually breaks to take it, and is clearly relieved. Set point is one of the finest rallies of the match.
In the 2nd set Sampras plays very well indeed, and Agassi offers little resistance.
The 3rd set looks to go the same way as Sampras has a 2-0 lead before Agassi comes back. Sampras clearly is having a let-down and eventually loses the 3rd set.
The 4th set is not high quality, but Sampras overcomes sloppy play early, firms up his game and eventually breaks to take a 5-4 lead and serves out the match.
Agassi simply never manages to make the match competitive. It is Sampras all the way, and it would have been Sampras in straight sets if he hadn't had a mental let-down in the 3rd set.
It has been alleged that this match was the start of the tail-spin that sent Agassi's ranking to no. 141 in the world. True or not, it has been widely publicized that Agassi took this loss very badly.

One of my all time favorite tennis matches ever. I never got tired of those aces by Sampras. And his tribute to Tim Gullicksen at the end made me cry.
at 32:38 may be the best rally in tennis history. I remember watching it live on tv back then and was pretty happy recording it on VHS. I've watched it like 100 times. First time in sth like 20 years I. Still amazing.

I ask myself this question everyday.
I think because he made things look so easy the same way you take for granted how a cat can move unlike other animals . You don’t think twice about it after a while and just take it for granted .
Sampras was the real goat
He didn't outplay Andre on the baseline in this match but he was able to win long rallies when it mattered.

Zero clay game .
He beat every single French Open winner in his era on clay . Every single one . He has a winning head to head on clay against his main rival Agassi and a way superior overall win / loss general count on clay against him too
His win loss record on clay from from 90-98 was in the top 4 of all win / loss records only been beaten by Brugera , Muster , Courier . That’s almost a decade in the top 4 of clay court players .That’s zero game to you ?
Beat Kafelnikov in Russia in a Davis Cup sudden death tie on what was the slowest clay court of all time because the Russians watered it down to mud almost .
So if that is a zero game to you then what can I say . His record on clay is actually very good overall so good that’s it’s inside the top 4 for most of the 90s . Brugera & Muster were both specialist clay courters during those days , leaving only Courier , a non specialist clay courter beating him out ....
The problem with the French is that he struggled in the 2nd week and I put that down to his Thallasaemia condition . Never got it right physically . But in terms of ability , the record speaks for itself .
If you wanna break down his baseline game even more than look at his US open finals vs Agassi . Look at the forhand and backhand winner counts . He had one of the most lethal forehands of all time and the greatest running forehand ever . He has never been outplayed from the baseline except for the Phillipouses Australia open 96 game . In a power era of tennis where people blew you off the court from the baseline , no one ever hurt Pete twice .

Sampras in my opinion probably with Federer was one of the greatest all around tennis players of all time.

I love Roger but Sampras would never have wasted two MPs like he did at Wimbledon in 2019 after eking the break..Sampras had a true feel for his opponents throat..and on his serve..no mistakes..he would have gone for the lines on an all out serve..
I see what you're saying. However, he himself admitted to Novak that it would have been hard for him to ace Novak. Most likely, Sampras would not even have pushed Novak into a 5th set. His game was simply not so evolved as it became during the era of the 3 GOATS. That being said, if Sampras had trained during the same era, I think he would have made the necessary adjustments. That includes a much-improved backhand. He might have wound up a mirror image of Federer.

Roger DID go for an all out serve...that's why he made a double fault.

At 40-15 he went for a cross court/wide serve, then Novak returned deep in the middle and Roger didn't trust his backhand...he tried to run around it and hit a wide inside out forehand. At 40-30 he missed the 1st serve down the T, made his 2nd serve and then...I don't wanna talk about it 😑
Agassi an all-time crowd favourite
Not that anyone cares but this is the match that got me to be an Andre Agassi fan for life. Even though he lost he was just sooo cool. And just for the record the Agassi towel point to the ball boys after he hits a winner is the coolest gesture in the history of tennis to this day. Know that
He was such a gracious loser in probably the toughest and worst loss of his career. Something that is a contrast to Sampras who is a great champion as a tennis player but a thourougly unlikeable human being and poor sportsman. There is a reason he was so unpopular with fans even as the dominant #1.
Mary Carillo is also probably a big part of Sampras's relative unpopularity as she is so far up Sampras's bumhole I am sure her ugly brown dirty looking hair is partly from the shit from being wedged so deep up Sampras's ass. And us tennis fans had to listen to her and her constant Sampras orgasms for 12 years plus. She is even more biased to Sampras than McEnroe brothers to Federer, and Mary Joe Fernandez to the Williams sisters, and that is saying something. Probably the only example of worse is Betsy Nagelsen when she commentated on Monica Seles, ugh.

@@aleksthegreat4130 I'm a Pete Sampras guy, but in pure truth, Agassi was more popular amongst casual fans by a wide margin. Sampras was ultra respected, especially by his peers as you sort of hit on, and admired by many women. Pete was like a Tim Duncan, while Andre had more like a Charles Barkley appeal.
I remember the Pepsi Cola with Agassi's image from that tournament in the '95 'it was a great time for Andre and tennis in general ehh memories ..
agassi went into a deep depression after this match it knocked him off his high horse.he would lose in the semis to inferior players like chang in the semis of grand slams after this

I sort of felt Pete would win though. Even though Andre Agassi was the #1 seed, Sampras was the better player on every surface, except of course, clay.

A prime Pete Sampras against a prime Novak Djokovic would be something to watch. Sampras could breakdown anybody with that serve but Djokovic at his best? Might be one guy he couldn't solve.
Would be very interesting, faster conditions would favour Sampras but Djokovics return may even counter Pete’s serve on fast courts.

Yeah, when Djokovic is on he goes to another level. I'd give Sampras a chance because his serve was unbelievable and his serve and volley style is something today's guys don't see often if at all. Would be very intriguing to see which player would adjust to the other better. Also, they didn't measure power the same way they do now but I saw Sampras live once, in his older years, and he could still hit toe-to-toe with anybody.
@@NYYanks2003040506 yea especially this version when he got old he stopped playing from the baseline but this prime version was a great counterpuncher from the baseline and didn’t come to the net every single point. Djokovics cross court backhand would damage Pete’s backhand but on a super fast hard court or the old grass at Wimbledon, Pete might win tbh.

Regardless of outcome, I'd expect a great match. Two very contrasting styles by masters of their craft.
Its all about the ball and court speed. Anything reasonably fast, like Wimbledon when they actually mowed it, or Decoturf, Pete is at worst a pick em.
At his best, he was as good as anyone. Ill put his performance in the 99 Wimbledon final up against any player ever. Tell me Novak breaks him that day lol.

Very subpar performance by Agassi. Probably his poorest match of the whole summer on hard courts. Pressure clearly got to him. Plus I think he overplayed that summer and was fatigued.

That particular summer, Agassi had rattled Sampras and had won much more hardcourt tennis.
But in my opinion Agassi never really handle the big pressure matches that well.

Sampras play the great match that day though of the US Open final and when Andre beading in the Australian Open final of the same year 1995 it was a really hot day that day
And Agassi being from Nevada and practicing in the desert all the time clearly handled the weather better you can see the Sampras was struggling with it and in the end really didn't care I don't think

First time I have heard someone call Agassi more talented. The more talented baseliner for sure, but Sampras had all the shots...serve, groundstrokes, volleys, and better movement.

I was a state ranked tennis player for few years, won Open tennis titles as a junior and a senior ..tennis tournaments.
The strings, and racquets today are so forgiving.
With a little flick of the wrist in under pressure Federer or the modern player 'if you will' can can hit top spin.
Smapras who used natural gut in a very thin guage didnt have that option nor did Agassi
