thanks for the lovely video. I have a question, I hope you give feedback to me: if the input 3d model is point cloud data, how can we place that model in Google Earth?
Thx this is awesome. A little advice: Most ppl do not need to have basics explained like how to get coordinate, where to point north or how to setup transparency. It was rather difficult for me to get the essentials out of your video. Which is: Type the earth location command, get the coordinates from GE, export it as Google earth file ... done. Most tutorials just waste too much time with basics and don't cut to the point. Still, didn't know you can export files for GE and import in GE. Thanks
Thank you so much for your advice! I find it difficult to find balance between beginner friendly and introducing something more niche to advanced users. Seems like I got it the other way around this time. Haha I'll try to improve that next time! Thanks again for taking your time to give me your feedback. That helps me a lot!
@@ArchiHacks at least you had your model already. Saw quite a number of tutorials where they literally started by opening the software. I mean, most beginner stuff is already out there one way or another, very complex things maybe effort a broader context. Time stamps also help quite a bit. Way too less are RUclipser utilizing them anyway. Goodluck with your channel.
Personally, as a beginner, I do like the fact this is beginner friendly. Makes it possible for us to understand these things too. Please don’t stop with the details, or make a version which is for the more ‘advanced’ party.
Great, but your selections were a bit unclear at 3:41 when you said "oh, you have to make sure that all your geometries are selected, then type that in". What exactly did you copy, and paste in the toolbar? It was a bit unclear. Thanks
Thanks for the video! Does this only work if the rhino model does not have groups/blocks? I have a model with groups and blocks, but when I bring it into google maps - it goes over to the site, but it does not the model. thanks!!!!
Hi, I don't know if you're still reading these comments but hopefully you hear my plea :P When I try to follow these instructions with a textured model, the model shows up in Google Earth but it's completely white. If I take the texture off of the material and assign a flat colour, Google Earth respects that, but trying to apply a texture just gets it flat out ignored. From what I can tell from my research, it *should* be able to display textures, but it's refusing to do so. (And yes, I've checked 'save textures' in the save dialog.) I don't know much of anything about 3D modelling and this video was already a huge help, but do you happen to know why I'm having trouble with this?
I've solved this, sort of! I have no idea *why* this works, but just by fooling around I managed to get it working. What you need to do is open the .kmz file as a zip file (it's really just a zip file with a special extension) and do two things: 1. Rename the folder containing the texture images (I renamed mine to "textures", I don't know if it matters) 2. Open the .dae file in a text editor, find the nodes that have the name of the model, a slash, and the name of the texture image. The name of the model will have any spaces replaced with "%20". Replace everything before the slash with whatever you renamed the folder to This *shouldn't* change anything. It's still just pointing the path to the folder. All it did was change the folder name and update the references to it. But for some reason, doing this got my textures to work.
Thanks for this!!! can i ask have you had anny luck veiwing the model on the web browser verion of google earth. i tried it and it opens the kmz file to the location but the model does not seem to load. Thanks
Hello loved the video! Our current Uni project in London has an existing building on site already is there any possible way of removing that building. Or would this be something I would have to edit in photoshop afterwards.
Hi Henry, I'm afraid there isn't a convenient option to do that. As you may have already imagined, the next best way might be taking two screenshots, one with 3D imagery and second without 3D, then photoshopping the two. I hope that helps!
@@ArchiHacks this should work, When you're in Google Earth , just right-click any 3D building you see and choose Hide building. Buildings you hide stay hidden until you restart Google Earth. nice site just found it ;)
Great video, but does anyone know if I can share these 3d models within google earth online? I can open the models in google earth online but they're only saved locally. It appears they cannot be opened from a .kmz file saved in google drive.
Nice one thanks! The only thing I think you missed was the scaling of the picture in rhino- you just eyeballed it because it was an example. But is there a way of accurately sizing the picture to the correct scale?
I'm glad you liked it!! Not that I know if this is 100% accurate, but if you take the screenshot with the scale (one of the check boxes on screenshot mode), you can use the bar scale to get fairly close :)
actually, it's easy to scale. Measure something in the picture using google earth so you know it's size. Then measure the distance in rhino. Use your calculator to find the ratio and voila, you have the correct scale factor.
@@3kids4dogs2cats Thanks for your reply - I know how to scale, but the problem is this is still eyeballing it as the accuracy is still limited by the amount that you can zoom in on google earth. It's not a big problem, just useful to know the limitations of this process.
@@3kids4dogs2catsCan you please sho me how to add that search command on the left of your screen? whatever you do is writing there. and i cant add this 😥
How did you match your building to real-world scale? It looks like when you imported the satellite image you didn't scale it in your Rhino against any given dimensions.... how do you know your sizes are even close to being right?
If you make sure that your Rhino model is scaled correctly, it should translate precisely. If you're finding them way too small or big, try adjusting your project unit! Let me know if that works for you : )
Archi Hacks is there a way to export poly lines from Google Earth to Rhino? I think a good workflow would be drawing that boundary with flat satellite imagery in GE since you can measure accurately in GE. Does GE measure tool take the distance following the topography or is it based on the flattened ground so the points selected ignore 3D extruded buildings and topo in GE? Your workflow mentioned also requires you to have known dimensions to size your building properly so getting clarity on the measurement tool would help a lot!
I'm having the same problem! There are no special characters or spaces when I put in the lat/lon, but then it says ((null)) a bunch of times when I finish doing the EarthAnchorPoint. Any suggestions?

Hi, will this work if there are already existing buildings on the site? Been trying the tutorial however I haven't had any success. Sincerely, frustrated archi student.
Unfortunately there is no easy way around this. One possibility is to take two screenshots and mesh them together in Photoshop. Take one screenshot with the 3D buildings turned on, and take the second without them.

same here. tried to flip already. no effort. also tried to change the geometry, textures,... still no. does somebody out there has any further recommendations? @nocho895 did you solve the problem already?
so after spending all day testing out dozens of export options i figured couple things that might help: 1. if you have block instances (your file was a dwg or some revit export) - explode block definitions, it will take longer for buildings to import into earth, but it will work. 2. if you have no blocks, try reparametrizing your geometry. purge the file and then export. good luck.
Absolutely! Make sure that your geometry is solid like surface or extrusions. I don't think curves and points are visible on Google Earth. Let me know how it goes!
