Excellent cinematography, the way the footage was shot gives an uncommonly realistic sense of accompanying the soldiers (particularly the "Zugführer"/squad leader) during the assault. Almost like the viewer is an invisible observer, love it. A good example of how this technique changes your viewing experience--you see the protagonist's realization of and reaction to the presence of a hostile shooter in the tree above him. Then, the enemy sniper up in the tree falls vertically into, and once again out of, your line of your of sight. The camera perspective is continuous & fixed level, as it would be if you were standing there looking at your squad leader...blink and you miss it. It makes all the difference when contrasted with the normal movie style in which you would suddenly cut to a new shot looking up at the tree from sufficiently far away to see how the sniper is positioned in the tree, how far up he is, what he looks like possibly even, then the impact of the bullets into him and his fall, before cutting to the next shot.

Really well done? Sorry, but It's full of tactical mistakes...and is an insult to the real troops that did this. The German units were much fitter and professional than this. Obviously chosen civvies to play this part. Huge mistake at 4:21 . Can you see it?
I think they call it a “long take”. Similar to the beginning of the battle of the bastards from game of thrones s06e09 where the camera follows Jon into battle. It’s one of my favourite filming styles because it really immerses you in the battle!
Could you make another film like this but longer? This short film is incredible. Fantastic filmography and acting. You guys did an amazing job. I would seriously watch like a 2hr version of this short film. Beats anything Hollywood could make. Again fantastic work.
Also they get it right. The sergeant uses his STG44 in semi fire mode. As directed by German doctrine for use of STG44. If hollywood made it they would have had him going through 20 magazines, thats all hollywood thinks. Whatever looks good. ( And of coarse they don't even know what a "STRORM RIFLE" IS. DUMB ASSES.
Arctic Fox 0406 the absence of german standard infantry tactics makes it less realistic, but still fine for me Mg42 should have provide covering fire tho
Oh... ok i didnt realize what he meant but I do know that the infantry movements change over time depending on the situation and the Camera is focused on the platoon leader more than the other soilders, so it may be harder to depict. Also the he was looking for the MG to provide covering fire but he was later shot as a result.
Ex soldier here. It was a very poor example of a patrol (There's no way I would even consider that a section attack). But that doesn't mean it wasn't entertaining to watch, although I feel like the firearm sounds really need more work. Also you never give field signals with your dominant hand.
I'd love to see a full length feature by this film maker. Rolling camera work really puts you on the scene. Realistic action, movement and gunfire- death comes in a nano second as in real war.

It's good to see a WW2 film without propaganda built in. Just straight up action like you were there watching the fighting. It is a distinctly different perspective without the political messaging meant to give meaning to the fighting, and suffering, and dying we're watching. That includes the film-making: no heroic soundtracks, no exaggerated special effects, no "heroic" charges, or overacted deaths, just simple small infantry squad engagement. Sometimes, you want the story. Other times, you just want the unpolished truth. Generally people don't die immediately like this in wars. There would be a lot more shots to limbs and a lot more screaming. Even getting shot in the torso won't kill you immediately, unless the bullet goes directly in to your heart.

In respect to realistic immersion, i mean

American here. After my father recovered from his wounds from fighting Japanese, he was a POW guard at Fort Benning, Georgia. This was the first big group of German POW'S from North Africa. Oh... ok i didnt realize what he meant but I do know that the infantry movements change over time depending on the situation and the Camera is focused on the platoon leader more than the other soilders, so it may be harder to depict.
