GR Yaris ECU is UNLOCKED! Getting it tuned at Garage Whifbitz + GPF Delete.

- Recently I was approached by Garage Whifbitz that the GR Yaris ECU is unlocked and can now be tuned. This is what I has been waiting for as it enables you to keep all the OEM controls that going to a aftermarket standalone ECU looses like cruise control etc.
We spent the day on dyne and on the road tuning and logging all different perimeters of the car and even removed the GPF to see what difference it made.
Figures are all wheel horse power at all 4 wheels on a Dynojet 4WD dyno.
We started the day at 232hp and 262ft-lbs
and left with 261hp and 285ft-lbs

Loved this video. I’m gonna subscribe for sure, hope to see more!
Thank you for the support. More is to come!
Got mine tuned today. It now makes 319 horses and 419Nm. Absolutely love this car!
My GR has K&N air intake and a Milltek Exhaust. It made stock 279 horses and 360Nm so some nice improvement with the ECU tune.
How you finding it? I found it really livens up the engine and makes it feel more frisky.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing Yes 4 sure. Now the car doesn't drive off it kinda jumps when putting ur foot down. Next step 4 me is another intercooler.
Just a few steps away from 500bhp
At the wheels?
This is fantastic news! I was planning to spend thousands on a Motec to retain all the factory features with the ability to tune. Now that the factory ecu has been opened i can focus on other areas of improvement.
Yeah this is what I’ve been waiting for. I didn’t want to go the route of a whole new ECU and then potentially loosing some factory features so I’m really happy with it.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing Is it possible to get pop & Bangs from doing this on stock ecu?
I believe that is possible but not advised when you still have a cat as it will damage it over time and can cause blockages.
Wow, that dyno curve looks exactly like another famous Toyota hot-hatch, the EP82/91 Starlet turbo.
Your reaction when you floored it first time was priceless👌😂
Great result on the dyno! Love to see more of it!
Thank you! Hope to go to some events and some more progress with the car in 2022.
I’m ordering a max spec GR Corolla hatch; good to know the ECU is unlocked 😈
Yeah I think with US now getting the platform this will unlock even more!
Yes, perfect timing! I put down a deposit on a GR Corolla Circuit on 4/4, I was nervous about a possible locked ECU.
That sounds mental. Top job

👌 that's a great video, overview of the path to more mumbo
Looks very quick now!
Yeah I have to say it’s pretty rapid now, third gear is just a monster.
Brilliant content as always keep up the good work 👍👍
How to improve? 7:15 Try to avoid running over the poor ducks. That was a quack I heard, right?
No ducks were harmed on the making of this video! 😂
For the front and sideskirt what kind of kit you used it i love it is very simple. Thank you more videos to come🙏🏼🙌
Sorry about the late reply, the front and side skirts are from Automotive Passion. A UK based carbon company. Great stuff, there is some videos on my channel from fitting them!
Thank you man👊@@FaithlessEmoRacing

Supra and gr yaris. 😍
Car looks awesome. Tuning potential for this platform is only just beginning. How're the "creature comforts" in this car as a daily? I've got an '11 WRX, and the "Subaru rattles" and road noise on longer drives are beginning to wear on me. Thinking about trading up into something more plush.
Yeah we are at the front line in finding what works and what doesn’t. That’s one of the reason I’m enjoying it so much!
The creature comforts is the reason why I’m so happy the ECU is unlocked as the only way to tune before was a standalone ECU and you loose thing like cruise control.
I come from a Evo 9 so understand the rattles etc and it’s nice having the comfort and also not having to worry about what will break next.
Nice! Keeping my in pure form tho. :}}
You still have the pumped in engine noises on when you were driving yeah???
Yes I still have them on. Im thinking of getting a encoder and trying them off and making a video on it at some point.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing i like them on 😃
Great video, one of the first showing the original ECU being modified. I just wanted to ask do you know if it will affect the Toyota warranty getting this done?👍
I’ve spoken to the service department and that stated that you won’t be able to claim warranty on something you have changed.
So if I went back and had a issue with the exhaust (aftermarket one is fitted) I couldn’t make a warranty claim.
But say I had a issue with a rear damper for example I’d still have warranty.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing I was thinking more of the ECU?
Yeah this would void warranty on the ECU if I was to make a ECU claim.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing lol that’s obviously the cases 😄 But wat about the engine, the transmission, the diffs?? They are all connected and controlled by the ecu so you’re guarantee is voided on this parts…unfortunately
@@gregg7869 warranty covers defects in quality or workmanship. If the issue is unrelated or a know issue then it would be covered under warranty.
Hopefully the final tune they gave you didn't have all the smoke coming out the exhaust at a certain rpm........
The smoke coming out is from the new GPF delete we fitted as it was still burning off any residue.
There was no smoke before fitting the GPF and the tune wasn’t substantially changed after fitting the delete.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing oh okay sweet as then 😋 gotta try and find reasons not to mod mine lol 🤣
Do you lose Toyota's warranty if you tune it like this?
Is this something the garage now offer as I can’t find anything on there website shy of ringing them…. How much for the ecu setup and tune mate?? 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yes they are now offering it. Just need to drop them a call or email and they can give you all the info!
Cool video bruv ...... r u not worried about loosing ur warranty
That is always something to consider. But the car has been very reliable so far and no issues and warranty will still stand for the rest of the car that hasn’t been modified.
It’s part of the enjoying the car for me is doing things like this. I enjoy being on that forefront of discovery.
After living with the tuned GR for a few weeks now what are your thoughts? Is it worth doing, did you feel the difference in power straight away etc ??? 👍
I’ve done about 1000 miles with the tune.
It is noticeable as soo as you start to build boost.
It builds harder and quicker and holds on! You couldn’t drive one back to back and not feel that difference.
I’ve also had it serviced by Toyota and they were fine that the ECU was mapped.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing That sounds great! I'm definitely considering it but I still have the standard exhaust, and no engine mods at all. Wondering if it's worth doing if I haven't upgraded other parts first? Interesting that Toyota weren't bothered about it either, did you tell them it had been done or are you just assuming they don't care as they haven't found out.......yet! 🤫
@@grantweller9300 I suppose it depends what’s your plans for the car? If you plan on some mods then I would wait to do them first. If you plan on keeping it standard then go for a tune and be interesting to see what it can do.
i hate how tq falls off so hard where you have the highest HP. really the only downside for these small motors is the top end.
That was intended in the tune. The reason for it is the torque at high rpm is where you put the most strain on the drive train and can cause the damage. If we didn’t care about the drivetrain and valve springs then we could keep more torque.
Also at higher rpm’s it’s the turbo that goes out of its efficiency range and your creating more heat for not a lot more work.
Mappers like to run it rich at the top end to protect the engine. It'a the sensible thing to do.
Seems you have a duck in the car, rudely interrupting you😁
😂
Hey man - how come it only started with 230? It should come 260 stock?
this dyno reads power at the wheels. Quoted figures bu the OEM's is power at the fly wheel!
@FaithlessEmo Racing Ah gotchu 👍
Thanks, enjoy the Yaris
Looking forward to one day jooning the GrYaris club 😎
Great video again! Did the resonated gpf delete make a big noticeable noise difference inside the car? . I'll be after a gpf delete pipe but don't want it to be too noisy. Thanks for any info.
It defiantly made it deeper tone. I went for the one with the resonator so was no louder on normal day to day throttle. Alittle louder on full power, full throttle.
Hello. Do you know how much power you gained just by deleting the GPF? Without ECU adjustment, or is the ECU adjustment absolutely necessary?
The GPF delete didn’t give massive power improvements. But made it easier to get a smooth power delivery and also dropped the exhaust temps a lot. Nearly 50 degrees C.
Hi. Do you think that the Resonated OPF Delete Pipe impedes the flow of the exhaust gases? Or is the OPF Delete Pipe with resonator just as streamlined as the variant without resonator?
I'm undecided which version to buy. I want the best possible flow (in favor of performance) but I don't want it to be loud as hell.
Best regards.
remember OPF delete is illegal and therefore no insurance company will cover the car
@@Mopselvis get the best flow then add a adjustable exhaust valve control system.
It’s all a trade off. Best possible performance will have no cat, GPF or resonator. But will be loud.
Finding what your willing to sacrifice for that performance is very individual choice. For me it’s my daily so can’t be too loud and I’m happy where it is at the moment.
Were you still able to keep all the oem features?
That is what I love about this tune. All the OEM functions are retained. Radar cruise control, everything. Toyota were even fine with it when they serviced it!
@@FaithlessEmoRacing if only I could have that in New Zealand
Hi , how the oem clutch handle the gain of power and torque? no problem? Are you going to upgrade it?
OEM clutch is handling 350+ power on other cars. So far no problem. I will upgrade the clutch if and when we go for more power.
Hi, what would be the price of the remap that you have?
I don't know the exact cost due to them being different as per what mods the car has. Also my car did a lot of the development work so was a different cost. But if you drop them a email or phone call with the mods you have they will be able to give you a price!
@@FaithlessEmoRacing my car is yet to arrive in about two weeks in dealership so it's going to be stock but thanks for the reply ✌️
@@Majski900R Well get the mods you want fitted and give them a call and they will sort it. Recently been on track with another tuned GR Yaris and I have to say I was catching him on the straights!
Are you able to share what parameteres were touched on the tune that was provided? Would love to know how aggressive the tune was in terms of changes made vs stock tune.
I would love to tell you what was changed but that is Garage Whifbitz’s IP and the tune is their own that they have developed with their knowledge including tuning the GR Yaris on the Syvecs ECU.
But you could drop them a call or message and they maybe able to tell you more info.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing Ok no worries, I was just very curious because the numbers would reflect a very mild bump in boost/timing and maybe fueling. Just wanted to see what the intended target was result wise. As in where you chasing out right numbers or just overall drivability, aka kill tune vs. conservative.
@@danlau9 yeah we wasn’t going to kill the engine and drivetrain. We worked to get the boost consistent but tail off at high rpm to keep longevity.
Whifbitz are developing the tune to put on customers cars so didn’t want to go balls out yet. Also they have experience with how the stock valve springs are quiet soft and need upgrading when pushing on for more power.
How have you lost so much bhp I thought they left the factory with 260 or something and ur gr was at 220bhp I’m confused please explain how this has happened
In the U.K. they leave with 257 as we have a GPF. Japan etc get 261 as they don’t have a GPF.
Also manufactures quote engine dyno figures.
These figures are to the wheels / ground so you have transmission and wheel and tyre losses.
This dyno also does not guess those losses to give a figure at the fly like some dynos. But with alittle maths your looking at about 323 at the fly.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing thanks for clearing that up, hope to buy one some day btw I subbed
@@FaithlessEmoRacing I need more gr content plz
@@BobSmith-ht4hv thank you for the support!
What did running cost
There was evidence of white smoke (over fuelling?) on your full load dyno pulls. Can you comment on that please?
It's run off from a brand new pipe (oils, and other liquids and solutions being burnt off). This always happens when u run in a new exhaust.
Yeah the smoke was from the GPF delete being fitted and being new.
As you can see in the video the original GPF go very hot and started to turn blue.
Personally if it was burn off I’d expect to see it consistently, not just at particular load conditions through the rpm range.
There was no smoke before the GPF was removed and it was only small tweaks after the GPF was removed and was aimed at smoothing out the torque rather than additional power.
@@duncangordon5648 Have you never installed a new exhaust before? This always always happens and goes away after a few heat/cooling cycles.
nice video mate!! what's the 0-60 now?
I haven’t got accurate timing gear to get a exact number. But hoping to do a follow up soon and try and get a 0-60.
The biggest factor there is how good you are at changing gears. I've seen a 4.6 on a stock car but most will be nearer 5.0 - 5.5
The biggest factor for me is how much I care about my clutch ha!
Eh 30bhp for a reflash, isnt litchfield getting north of 300 froma plug and play ?
In total the tune got mine to 323 at the crank.
Mine did have some mod first, so started a little up on stock.
Do you still have ese turned on?
All OEM functions are retained with this tune.
maybe some numbers
any improvements in fuel economy? how's the day-to-day drive like with the massive improvement in low end torque?
I haven’t noticed anything different with fuel economy. Still get about 30-32 on my way to work.
When not in boost it drives very much like stock. Easy in traffic and easy on the motorway.
Low end torque now puts you back into your seat and makes overtaking easier.
In 6th on the motorway it pulls very hard now!
what system are they using to remap the stock ECU ? Thanks Is there a map for E85 ?
Whifbitz are using their own tunes and I believe they are working on a E85 tune. E85 is harder to get here in the U.K. so it’s not something I can run!
I might have to take my GR to GW next time I'm visiting an old petrol-head friend in the Brecons. I've been waiting for that ECU to get cracked.
Got a Mongoose resonated exhaust, Airtech enclosed case unit, Airtech intercooler and Turbosmart dumpvalve. Still not sure whether to commit to the GPF delete and the Toyota service anxiety but the GW titanium delete looks tempting.
How long does the tune take?
Yeah I’ve been waiting for it to be cracked so couldn’t wait once I found out! I think the GPF delete helps but it’s not for everyone and some like to keep it and that’s fine.
I’d love to go full titanium system to hear the difference.
On the Toyota service anxiety, don’t worry. I’ve just took mine in to Toyota the other day for service and look at a rattle. Told them it’s tuned and not to touch the ECU and they were great with it.
Came back and it was parked right out front. Had staff and customers looking over it.
Had staff come out and say they loved seeing and working on it, the manager even said they had a Ford Mustang in and no one wanted to to work on it as they wanted to work on mine! 😁
The tune normally takes maybe a hour or two, you would have to drop them a message. Mine took all day as we was seeing what worked and what didn’t.
If you so happen to keep one of these stock, you're sitting on a gold mine 10 years down the line.
You maybe right, but I’m enjoying it now and you never know what might happen in 10 years.
You’ll sitting on a gold mine anyway stock or none stock
@@FaithlessEmoRacing So true! U could be dead tomorrow so live now!
Exactly. I’m enjoying this journey and to not enjoy it for what might come at the end is not for me at this point.
Fuck that ha! I've done 13,300 odd miles in mine since last May and loved every second. Ive looked after it as well as any man can but I'll be a long time under the ground and every moment in the GRY is precious.
What boost is it at ? And what is the power conversion to the flywheel ?
I’ll get the boost figures I can’t remember them off the top of my head. At the fly your looking at 323hp.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing cheers yer I know it doesn’t really matter but everyone else gives flywheel so it’s just to compare really 😂
@@davidholding5335 I totally understand it’s tricky to compare when everyone gives different figures!
@@FaithlessEmoRacing yer cool good video enjoyed it
@@davidholding5335 so it runs 1.6 bar of boost down low and tapers off to 1.4 bar of boost at high rpm!
Was he doing the dyno runs in 5th gear??
I can’t remember which gear they use. Don’t think it’s 5th. Think it’s 4th. But could be wrong.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing Ok. It sounded obnoxiously long lol and I know Motive was having weird issues with their Yaris on the dyno in 4th. Something about the power levels not matching from run to run with the same exact tune. Was curious if that was happening to you guys and if you decided to dyno in a different gear.
I did mention that to the guys when we was there. Not just for the tune but when we did work with the exhaust, see my other video.
They were saying the reason why they had that issue was they were running a hub dyno, where as Whifbitz are using a rolling road with front and rear connected. Meaning both axels are working together.
Gpf delete will reduce value.
I’ve always got the original to go back to if or when I want too.
@@FaithlessEmoRacing also the gpf is designed to help the engine function and without it functioning the engine will start to wear out.
I'm not making that up.
@@madanto2394 that is not true. The car is sold without a GPF in Japan thus they have more power.
It’s not needed for the running of the car at all, and there are no sensors past the GPF so the car doesn’t even know it’s gone.
@@madanto2394 you need to look up what GPF's do. They are not to aid smooth running of the engine.
@@tracktimevideos5164 if the exhaust gases are being recirculated and that stops it will start to wear the engine unless you reprogram stuff from factory.
Turn the bloody background music off ffs
Sorry if it’s too loud, will adjust for next time.
So, Toyota ECU can be unlocked! Is this correct?
Correct. They can do a full tune.
