Ahhh Japan. Where the main state of mind… is OCD. It can be stressful trying to attain such perfection if you haven’t mastered the Art of Zen and embracing imperfections. Why do you think there’s such a dark side to Japan? The pressure to conform and keep up appearances is very high.
Also, I think one of the main reasons people there don’t own very much is because they are on an island. Space is limited. Everything is compact. You have to be mindful of what you keep. Maybe other islands aren’t so cramped. But keep in mind the density of Tokyo at the height of its population.

Thank you for sharing. I am sure there many different lifestyles people in Japan follow, and not everyone is a minimalist. However, here we talk more about philosophy behind it, its aesthetics and what we can learn to adopt in our lives to make it more fulfilling and beautiful. Minimalism is a very individual journey, and it is perceived by everyone differently. Regarding the fact that Japan is island and has limited spaces, I heard another alternative explanation - earthquakes. People are used to the idea that in one moment they can loose everything and therefore they don’t strive to accumulate stuff under which they can be buried.
