Otis' speech has some of the best set of lines in the entire show, ironic since he was sold short as a "good-for-nothin' drunk" for most of the series, but when sober, he turned out to be one of the most humble and wise characters.
Such a great scene. Andy knew he was taking the gamble by putting his faith into Otis. Knowing that Andy was taking the gamble, Otis responded by taking responsibility and not letting Andy down.
My favorite episode. If anyone was deserving of recognition that day, it was Otis. For he showed everyone who doubted him, and only thought him a drunk, what he was really made of.
one of the best scenes in the show, imo. very understated how his wife was so proud of him. as it turns out, he really is worthy of an award, just not the one they wanted to give him. very awesome character moments -- this is exactly why this show is what it is.
I got choked up watching this episode. My dad was known around the neighborhood as an Otis type. The dignity given back to Otis and his humble acceptance was a real tearjerker for me.
The script was terrific and I bet it took some practice to get it down for the conversation between Barney, Andy and the mayor outside the room. They pulled it off perfectly, it’s hilarious.
The Mayor, Councilman, Sheriff, Deputy, Women Historical Society, and Newspaper, along with Mrs Campbell! Seems like Otis has some good friends and family! Even a reformed brother!
true Otis drinks alot but when need be he didn't let Andy down who had faith in him even if the Mayor, Barney and the Town Council did not have faith in Otis.he proved them wrong.
Hate to say it but tv in past years was way better than today's garbage as with most shows..Vulgar comedy, killers and criminals , violence . Even back then the violence was low key at best. Good old days for sure. That's what makes good memory's.
Funny, but in real life, Otis never drank. On the andy griffith show Otis part was shut down during the tail end of the sitcom because the show frowned on his part of always being drunk. Otis was the man!
He might think she’s the most beautiful woman in the world. Just look at Marla Hooch in a league of their own, that man ADORED that ugly girl and thought she was gorgeous. There is a key for every lock.
In the Christmas one, a store owner was mad because someone was caught moonshining and it was messing with his store sales of alcohol. Some stores are allowed to sell alcohol. People just aren't allowed to moonshine.

Unless Barney was teaching him the rules of the road or hitting him with a tomato on deputy duty line-up🤷🏼♂️🤓😎✌🏻

Well said. And Otis' speech was wonderful.
But Austint
Otis' wife standing by his side. Love is real.
It was so nice to see Otis all cleaned up, hair combed, and in a suit.
My favorite episode. If anyone was deserving of recognition that day, it was Otis. For he showed everyone who doubted him, and only thought him a drunk, what he was really made of.
Otis played his part so good and well
Hal Smith, the actor who played Otis, was close to a teetotaler, almost never taking a drink.
"The only plaque Otis Campbell deserves is from the distiller association of America". LOLclassic
So nice and humble chap Otis is.
The same actress played Otis’ wife in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.
Barney "Wheres my plaque, I want my plaque". Priceless.

Otis was such a sweet and kind character
Otis makes a good sensible character, courtesy of Mrs. Campbell.
Just does not get any better than this. Honor Dignity and Class! I truly hope Hollywood can one day recapture this.
Sorry but our tv programming too far gone to ever go back to decent . Decency has become obsolete in the USA 😢

I loved this show as a kid but have much greater appreciation of it now. So sad that today's hollywood would never create anything like this again.

Loved Otis. My favorite character. Loved the way he staggered into his cell.
Otis..Hal Smith..had quite a career. Look him up on Wiki..
Barney getting to say, the one and only time, "You beat everything, you know that?".
true Otis drinks alot but when need be he didn't let Andy down who had faith in him even if the Mayor, Barney and the Town Council did not have faith in Otis.he proved them wrong.
At first, but the Mayor and Town Council were there while Otis recieved the Plaque!
Supposedly Nathan Tibbs ran 8 miles to burn this bridge, and Otis can hop on one foot longer than Barney, guess natural stamina ran in Otis's family.
This is a perfect example of why you should never sell anyone short. The second you let them fall, they will rise up and leave you humbled.
Your comment is a perfect example of why you should be careful not to juxtaposed reality with television.

Absolutely exceptional.
a great episode I love the "or should I say the 100 proof" line :)
AWESOME..NO ONE CAN'T DISPUTE THIS..
Awesome!!
So great....Otis was a good guy.
They say you should never judge a man's character by his worst day; well I suppose that should also apply to his best day.
One of my favorite TAGS episodes.
The look on Andy at 3:25 always got me a bit. Surprise combined with pride.
Distillers association of America !!! 😅😅😅😅
Where's my plaque ? From the distillers society of America! ! Three cheers from the graybar hotel 😂😂😂😛😛😛💟💟💟👍👍👍👲👲👲

Best show ever.....
Some of those townspeople demonstrate the biblical quote: oh ye of little faith. ☺️

When someone fell down the stairs
In those days they didn't understand the consequences of giving an alcoholic a drink! I still love the show.
Otis wasn't an alcoholic, he was a drunk. In fiction there is a difference
@@mikecummings4715 link to the fiction rulebook please
@@mikecummings4715 fiction shmiction. A drunk loves to drink. It's his first concern. But he doesn't need it to function. A alcoholic does
pfft... as much as today
The mayor was always such a typical elected official- more worried about his reputation and success than anything else.
That's his job!
Now I see why Otis drank so much.
That's not a trophy wife that's a plaque wife

So if this is a dry county, how come the mayor gets to give out drinks?
Hummmm
Political hypocrisy written into the script.

Because some Counties it is only hard liquor that it applies to,no wine!
I didn't know that Otis was married.
How can not when he talks about her all the time!
0:08 The Mayor tried to get his pouch as close to Andy’s legs as he could. Yikes!
