DipIt #17: Blue Jean Pocket Watch

- Опубликовано: 9 сен 2024
- Taking a suggestion from a Facebook visitor, I decided to take a crack at a Blue Jean Pocket watch. Denim Micarta is a fun material to work with and super easy to make!
In the end, my blank was much larger than needed. Still with only a handful of denim squares and about 5oz of resin this was a very inexpensive project. Even with the larger than need blank!

Love this one, Peter! After seeing how small it became, I was thinking a small plastic butter tub or cream cheese tub would have yielded a just about right starting size for the blank. Save a bunch of resin. I don't know how you can stand the shavings sticking to everything. That drove me crazy!
Yeah. It's a really small blank that's needed. I'm like an Italian grandmother, I cannot make a small portion to save my life...
Peter Brown lol
Peter Brown how about sesame seeds? Some black some white, I received my new chef knife in the mail and it had an unfinished handle and I polished it with sesame oil, I know that pepper grinder turned out great, maybe a dried pepper micarta? That would look really cool as a chef knife
That is a awful idea. Imagine anyone turning a blank made out of a pepper... they would never finish it. You would start and immediately regret your life decisions as you start to sneeze and cry from the pepper burn as it seeps into your eyes and skin.
RedSoul001 he already did a peper grinder made of black pepper
Very impressive, but can you make a guitar made out of sheet music? A music guitar?
Nice idea, I would like to see any instrument made with music sheets.
The guitar itself might be too technical but something music related would be super cool
Guitars are not difficult, but it's not a weekend project. Check out Crimson Guitars's 12 hour build. There's a lot of tools, templates, measuring, sanding, drilling, layouting, sanding, and soldering involved.
Been cool if you teamed up with someone to make the fret board and added the fittings, and you made the Neck and body - adding whatever spaces where needed - assuming an electric rather than acoustic...
Davie504 style comment on a Peter Brown video....
what is this, a crossover episode?
Whelp, joining the rank of the Jorts, Jandles, Joots, and Jearrings, is the Jatch.
"Hey man what time is it..." "It's a quarter past Jeleven"
This is a jood jomment
Jerfect
Jerfectly Jalanced, as all Jings Jould Je
You seem to be really good at managing time, I bet it's in your jeans
Practical Renaissance Aaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Practical Renaissance He's very good in wasting time and material.
win
Nice!
Nail polish and resin
(I work in a fabric store) it's so much easier to cut with a pair of sharp scissors than a box cutter (for jean and fabrics)
Good to know! I had some trouble there...
Or a rotary cutter
A rotary cutter would work well too!
+1 on Rotary Cutter.
Once you get used to it's demands for a blood tribute, every freaking time I use one, they work great.
Jessica Clift calm down there AVE..
This blue jean pocket watch is quite "Jeanious"
Ok I just crack myself up!
I Like White Cake!!!! That joke left me "panting" from laughter.
You're TEARING yourself apart!
I Like White Cake!!!! Lol for a second I thought I was on reddit
I Like White Cake!!!! I know it sounds cheesy but isn't this channel grate
I just couldnt LEVI this comment alone
When my brother was in high school he had a pair of jeans that the back pocket ripped off of.
He would go around school throwing it on the ground and saying "Woops! Dropped my pocket!"
The looks he got were phenomenal.
Those denim shavings look pretty cool. I wonder if you could suspend them in resin to make a denim particle board?
William Davis dip it
William Davis I said that to the spirals from the hole sae
I love how his voice resinates throughout the workshop...
I'll go home.
AJ Pollard honestly same. Probably weird but when he's pouring resin or smth i like when you can hear him breathing
Please DIP A WAFFLE!!! Make a plate!!! Make a waffle plate!!!!!!
I love the idea of a waffle plate! Yum
When you were turning it, and said, "That's a *LOT* of resin!" (before turning it down much smaller), I suddenly got the mental image of the White Rabbit in Disney's "Alice In Wonderland", running madly while hauling out an enormous alarm clock on a chain and shouting, "I'm late! I'm late!"
Looks like you're been crushing freeze dried smurfs
I'm not saying Gargamel's right, but those smurfs are pretty annoying...
I knew it! You have resin in your jeans! It's something you were born with! Great job!
MakeTinkerShare i see wt u did thereeee ;-)
Every time Peter sprays the mould release all over his dipping material I lose a year of my life from stress.
Haha! Close your eyes and pretend it's not happening.... That's what I do!
KingKarrit Omg you cant have many years left
- That's what I do -
Explains a lot about his technique.
Probably a factor in the delamination at 6:32
Hey Peter, you should make an ocean table with blue tinted resin and concrete, another channel made a very good one and I think you could put an interesting twist on it because you are the king of resin! like if you think Peter should make this!
Chris Wood you talking about Bob from I Like To Make Stuff?
I love Bob's table! I think he did a great job with it. :)
Chris Wood I think going off that idea, a resin fish tank could be cool. Like fill a fish bowl with resin and plastic fishies or something
Marissa Webb I agree 100%
Chris Wood no offense but the comment is edited but there's still a mistake? (You are the king or resin!)
Only In Peter Browns woodshop do we look in the very face of wood itself and say "HA!!! Wood!? Where we're going we don't need wood!"
What about literal salt and pepper, salt and pepper shakers? I know you've worked with both but I think it'd be cool to make salt and pepper shakers out of salt and pepper!!
jessica shoffner the problem is that resin isn't food safe.
And pepper almost killed him last time he turned it 😅
Misha Stro true...
This is my favorite series ever to exist
My daughter and I love your shows. Especially the stuff with candy and crayons. She asked me to request a video where you make something with both materials. Like crayons and skittles.
That turned out pretty cool
Thanks!!
is it possible to make a resin watermelon bowl?
Natticate that would be epic
Unfortunately, I do actually think watermelon will rot under resin, unless you were to clean everything away from the side of the gourd.
Uh, if the watermelon was super dry. Yes. Moisture and resin don't mix.
If you scoop out the flesh of a half cut melon then dry it upside down with a scaffolding inside it (so it does not deform when drying) then you could put the skin in resin and you got you're self a bowl.
a jocket jatch
Now if only pocket83 would make one. Pocket making a pocket pocket watch.
Pocket's pocket pocket watch.
What's in pockets pocket? Or its pockets pocket pocket watch
Pocketception!
I'm a 14 year old girl and you are probably my favorite RUclipsr I get so happy when I see that you posted when I first found your videos I watched every one on a marathon I love them
You made this so well, it's almost like it's in your "jeans".
haha!
I am so glad you revisited jeans! The blue jean bracelet is one of my favorite videos.
(7:35)When you have denim shavings on your hands it looks like you have Cookie Monster hands!
Oh man, it totally does! "COOKIE!"
My first thought was "Smurf!"
Hi Peter, I hope the lathe chisels served you well sir? here in Sheffield we are proud of our steel-making history (what is left of it) sorry for getting slightly political there!!. I don't know if it is known in the States that Sheffield is a producer of high quality steel because I know that you make good steel yourselves but in the UK Sheffield is known for its steel and cutlery. I have worked in the steel industry and my brother still does so it makes me proud to see tools made in our city so far from home. I really enjoy your work, and indeed your humour! Thank you for taking time to post your videos. N.
Neil George hello! Also in Shef! I think I'm Yorkshire... my adopted home!
The Steel city noodlepipkin! not only God's own County but......South Yorkshire! because we were the largest county we had to be broken down into North, South, East and West!!! N.
Neil George YES! 😂
I know close to nothing about the topic but for some reason, Sheffield is synonymous with quality steel to me. Must be good if even the uninitiated know it. Lol
Pocket Pocket Watch Made With like 8% pocket
That snap from the watch clicking in was SO SATISFYING
Yay! Another video! Awesome vids pete
Thank you!
Dude, you're like the Star Trek of the DIY world - "Resin, the (nearly) final frontier. These are the adventures of Pete, his ongoing mission: to explore strange new uses for woodworking tools, to seek out new techniques and mold releases, to boldly (and sometimes blindly) go where no wood worker has gone before!"
I know that you've tried putting resin shavings into wet resin and it basically disappeared, what if you put colored resin into the newer wet resin?
Lauren Nardin or the resin was different from the other (is there a difference is my question)
Carolina Tijerina that's a great question, I hope peter brown sees it!
Commenting in the hope he sees it now
It's always nice to wake up and watch one of Peter's videos before work- even though I dont get to work in a shop I still feel like I can accomplish a lot just pulling on his enthusiasm for good work : )
Who else wanted him to do micromesh even though its denim
I think this is my favorite project of yours. I always end up back here when I'm bored.
........so.....I have been tearing through episodes of Stranger Things on Netflix...rewatching them in preparation for season two.....nothing could pull me away from it.....until I got a notification of a new Peter Brown video......Peter, you are a terrible person.
animalmother556x45 You have till Halloween slow your roll 😁
TheAnti-Guru no! I plan to run through it a third time the week before........I'm a disgusting person
animalmother556x45 haha me too...im super excited.
animalmother556x45 I watched seasons 2-6 of Game of Thrones in a little over a week. You can manage one season of Stranger Things before Halloween.
Eileen Yost Didn't mean to give the impression that I am in a "hurry"......I just can't stop once I start....
peter is easily one of the most creative people on RUclips and it really elevates his videos
That pocket watch casing was _EXTRA THICC!!_
I love that you are adventurous and willing to try to make anything!!
MAKE A DREAMCATCHER! YOU COULD ADD RESIN IN THE GAPS TOO! DO IT, PETER!
the strings are what catches dreams. it defeats the whole point.....
My absolute favorite so far. I never thought it would hold together. Great job as usual Peter.
Blue jean shavings dip it?
Hello from Charleston south carolina! Love what you do. You inspire me to keep fighting for a home. I miss the workshop so much.
"Thank you very much for WATCHing"..... I see what you did there.
honestly this channel has saved me from a lot of personal issues. I have really bad anxiety and whenever i get flare ups (pretty much every night at this point if i am being honest here), i sit and watch shoptime :) this may sound super stupid but I honestly appreciate everything you do Peter and I've watched/liked just about every single video you've put out there. I love your work, thank you for all you do, you touch lives without even knowing it!
But you didn't upload the video on October third... Phenomenal video as always though! Favorite RUclips channel!
There's something so weirdly relaxing about watching these
Make some pinecone micarta for something! that always looks awesome!!
Ooh! I don't think this is related to pinecone micarta, but what about a dipit with an actual pine cone? That could be really pretty.
That's practically what it is tbh ahhahaha
Peter: Micarta is one of my favorite materials to make!
*Flashback to that one rage enduced time he tried to make it*
You could have drilled holes around the edge and sewn a seam.
I left the first time that spray thing came off I laughed really really hard after it came off the second time. "It seams like he did a good job." 😂😂
I need to do this to my uncles pocket watch he gave me XD
That is epic! I love reusing old jean in craft projects. Just love this!!
*Do a collab with Alec Steele!*
I don't know what it is, but I cannot stand that guy. Something about the way he talks, he constantly sounds like he's speaking with an affected accent
Yep, can’t stand that much arrogance.
I also am not a fan of Alec
I will say i love alec's videos :D
I have been a fan of yours for years and I love your new content but I still like to come back and watch the old stuff
I thought the murder bowl was dipit #16?? Lol my OCDP is troubled lol. But also, this looks fantastic!
Oops!
lol
*OCPD
Fixed. Now we can all sleep better!
Eyes4Wonderland *CDPO
Hello from Sheffield, South Yorkshire! 🇬🇧 so excited to have my city mentioned!
*JOCKET JATCH*
i've been watching your videos for at least a year now and every time i do i still question how i, a 22 year old woman with no experience or watch history with any shop stuff, ended up on your channel, but i'm always glad i did because it's just so entertaining
Did you make this for pocket 83?
At 3:22 looks like a ashtray I made my parents in art class back in the 70's
Make a cereal bowl made out of cereal.
The reason I'm avoiding this one: It wouldn't be food safe.
Someone would make it, get sick and send me hate mail.
Cereal bowl made of cereal box. Bonus points if you can retain the box art :p
Peter Brown that's true I didn't think about that.
I watched this when it came out, and again now. It's still a cool project.
I love the long, quiet, close-up portions of these videos. I can't decide whether Peter just knows his audience that well, or if he helped create that audience.
I love how real you keep your videos! So fun to watch and learn!
Never seen an idea quite like this but I really enjoyed the video, you're definitely one of my favorite channels to watch!!
Oh hey! I know the folks that run Total Boat! They're a really great place. That's so cool that you're using their product! ⛵
I absolutely live for these videos, one of my favorite channels. I get so excited when videos are posted
Looks amazing. So therapeutic watching you turn stuff.
one of the few channels I give a thumbs up on before even watching. Enjoy every video!!
Blue jean damascus. Thats what it reminds me of. That nice pattern from the gaps in the material. I love it!
"You know, you don't wanna be shaking the wrong can"
-Peter Brown
Awesome project btw!
This looks great! (Skipped to the end to see finished product now im rewatching)
This was splendid old chap! Say do you have the time.... Love it Peter! - Brian
I've always kind of wanted to see you make a set of tools for the shop. Like, even if they weren't feasible to actually use, and were just for decoration, I'd like to see a big compilation video where you used a different technique for each tool. Like different chisels with resin handles, a hammer with a micarta handle, a file with a wood turned handle, things like that.
Love the super close up shots of the denim on the drill press.
Your theme music reminds me of being a kid, I get excited when I hear it.
His video was exactly what I was needing right now. Thanks for the DipIt Peter!
Hey Peter, If you ever have another project where you need a truly mechanical pocket watch let me know. I have all sorts of movements and parts. Cool project!
That turned out beautifully! I'd make a matching short beaded chain with a clip on the end and carry it attached to my "office in a bag" (an oversized bag with all things I need when designing for a client.) Love it!
Being from Sheffield myself it was nice to here that's where the steel came from. Nice video!
What a cool project, Peter Brown! Lovely!
Lovely present from Tim. Finest steel in the world. Lucky you.
Omg if you still have the scraps from all of your dip it episodes, you should chop up the scraps and dip em!
Denim micarta, always a favorite material. About time for me to start experimenting with my own variations on micarta. Thank you for the inspiration!
Turned out very nice, it makes an ordinary watch look a lot more sturdy.
I really loved the colored pencil things you made! I'd love to see more of that! I also love seeing wearables like jewelry
Welcome back Peter! Thank you for posting a new video it made my day!
Wow! It turned out to be absolutely gorgeous!
Denim for micarta makes an excellent Damascus-ish pattern. Beautiful
I have no idea how you make some of these things work, it’s incredible
I had to smile when I was watching this because I recently binge watched your videos and amongst them was your other denim video. In that one, you're using resin for the 1st time I think and your words, when it says to mix for a minute, were....."I'm not gonna do that" and in this one, you're stressing to mix really well. 😂 how you've grown Peter hahahahaha
YKNOW I was having a p bad day up til this was posted. Still the best series I watch.
That turned out AMAZING! 👖⏱
I'm new around this channel but I have to say that I love all of your projects and your attitude and that your videos really make my day!
Tim is an OG we love Tim!😂
It's beautiful, I wish I could add it to my collection.
I just love your videos! You're a bright spot in my week. Heck of a craftsman too!
Always a big fan of pocket watches, thank you for the idea.
