Cathy Chow portrays this character perfectly, a pitiful character pressured to do evil stuff by her master and bear the huge responsibility as a clan leader.
The power of her acting is that she made you believe it was all due to pressure. Some of the stuff she did was quite voluntary and for her own selfish desires. Her senior sister refused to kill her beloved despite the pressure and was willing to die. Not all can be expected to do that but Zhou Zhirou did not follow her master's instructions to the letter. She was told to not marry and bear children with him but she schemed like heck to try to make that happen. She was quite capable of picking and choosing what to follow and not follow.
