Unlike in nature where snakes are a subcategory of squamates, in mythology dragons are a subset of serpents. Large size is not required but chimerism is: if it's JUST a snake or lizard it doesn't count; but if you call it a "lizard with a X head" then congrats. Dragons must have legs, otherwise it's a serpent, although dragons often have long snakey bodies. Being giant, having wings, breathing fire or poison and having multiple heads are not requirements but are all very common. Dragons are pretty much exclusive to Eurasia, but serpents are found on all continents except Antarctica as far as you know.
