I finally went to the Merrie Monarch!!! After 20 years of watching VHS recordings that my Grandfather would send to us, I was there front and (side) center... and when I heard you perform, I remembered this performance. This will always be one of my favorite performances. If there is a recording, I'd buy it. This hula made the uli uli one of my favorite instruments.

This is so beautiful yet so poignant, sad even. I am thinking of the love and hope the Princess and indeed the nation of Hawai`i had for Ka`iolani and how tragaic was her passing at such a toung age. This hula honors her in a most lovely and gentle way.

why didnt this win first place? the dancing was amazing, and that was was the most beautiful oli I have ever heard and ipu heke transition at 5:58 was great. And the use of the uli'uli!!! Awesome! I love Kahiko!
I guess it's about what the judges see. I was in a competition over 10 years ago and we lost first place by two points because a part of someone's costume was hanging off. What we see as perfection can be "near perfection" to others. I heard one year the winner won only by one point. Unless we see the score cards, we can never know what the judges were thinking.
I want their uli uli. They are beautiful. I have two sets right now. One that has red outside and yellow on the inside and I have a brown one with tapa in the middle but I would give up all of those for just one of these. Amazing dance.
Just found this ... it’s 2019 now. Beautiful!! Should be shared with the mainland! The Chinese dance companies make the national circuit - why not the Merrie Monarch participants?
