Yes!! I have been dealing with chronic issues for 2 years now that my doctor has stated he believes to be rheumatological, but we do not currently have enough info to pinpoint a specific diagnosis. I've had people in my life passive aggressively accuse me of "wanting a diagnosis " as if I WANT to have a serious condition. I don't! But a diagnosis of anything, even something serious, would mean an end to the constant uncertainty and anxiety! Even if it was serious, at least I would have a path forward, treatment options, communities to reach out to, lifestyle management to implement. And if I do have something serious, I would want to know as soon as possible!
Speaking from experience, being told that you want to be sick for attention, when all you want is answers and information is SO insulting and infuriating. I would have thought that Jake of all people would understand!

I cried from relief in the doctor's office when I was finally diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 18. I'd gone through so much shit and other doctors dismissing me or telling me my symptoms were my fault that to finally have someone say, "yeah, you just have a shitty thyroid" and then have an actionable plan moving forward to deal with it was the most amazing thing to hear.

You can't technically have Chronic Lyme disease, that's just called dead. You can have post treatment Lyme disease syndrome. Ironically Cronic Lyme Disease is used to refur to people with symptoms but no official diagnosis from a doctor or to refer to the post treatment syndrome symptoms.
Not that any of this matters, it's all semantics and only really matters if you are a Healthcare professional. But for someone who is nit picking someone else and throwing out the disinformation card, you can at least use proper terms and nomenclature for your own illness, took 10 minutes of reading on my own to figure it out and type this. The momment his doctor confirmed that it was NOT lupus, he literally told us too on the pod lol

  • @malikkilam4360
    @malikkilam4360 11 месяцев назад +122

As somebody who has Lupus, this gave Lupus a lot of exposure. He even took time in the podcasts to mention wanting to pay medical bills for those who had Lupus when he was first going through his own scares, because he understood he may not have it, but that others did officially have it and he could already tell what pain the bills are. (Anybody going through specialist care in the US can say what a burden it is to the wallet, especially when getting infusion care for Lupus) He probably felt that real fear of "What if I have this?" just at a baseline, which many can't even have the heart to begin to understand. Many I meet don't even know what Lupus is, and just blow it off.
To speak on the exposure part: In my time in Lupus communities, I have seen SO MANY men talk about how they were diagnosed with Lupus by one rheumatologist, and when they have to switch for whatever reason, their new rheumatologist will believe differently under the extremely misinformed and harmful myth of "Men can't have Lupus!!" and their diagnosis, and potentially their treatment, was ripped away from them. Many people do not believe men can have Lupus, and gatekeep it as such, be it doctors or people online and for whatever myth causes such misinformation to be prevalent.
It is horrible, and when I saw Ethan talking about his fears and the results, I felt so sad for him as I would never wish this on anybody. Many of us know the journey and how symptoms can present but how it can take YEARS to properly "present" tests wise, or fully symptom wise, and in the meantime we suffer from horrific side effects. But I recognized also that he is a man, and I saw this and was grateful he was talking about it, even if it's a scare, because not enough talk about how men can have Lupus, or be at risk for it like anybody else. I cannot imagine how this is seen in men, as I do feel often they are also maybe under-diagnosed for what is a real condition to them as well.
This was a positive exposure for Lupus just in itself for maybe people to think "wow what is Lupus?" and look into it, but also to help tackle the harmful stigma that men cannot have Lupus; it helped breach that subject imo and create conversation where hopefully many could learn.
Can it still flare up later? Absolutely. So to discount him as "lying" or "faking" is also just a disservice to those who feel like they are faking or lying, when it can end up taking 7 years for some to even get their diagnosis. It took me 4 years to get a diagnosis; everything pointed to no until it pointed to yes; the signs were there the whole time just like for him. I wasn't lying when I would tell friends back then I worried I had Lupus. I don't think being aware with the concerns doctors tell us is "lying" or trying to profit, and it's a horrible gate-keeping mentality to Lupus and just chronic illnesses/autoimmune diseases in general to act like somebody is lying or trying to profit by being open about something that is often unsure.
When a chat member shared their loss of their male partner being diagnosed and subsequently passing, it was hard and they noted Ethan did wrong by continuing to talk about. But I think it's more reason to give voice and notice to men potentially having Lupus, and in my opinion that is all he was doing. It is not IMPOSSIBLE and it makes it hard for people to even consider something is wrong with them, especially men, when men are gatekeeping OTHER MEN about what they can or can't have under the guise of "it's for women!" As a woman, I don't want Lupus gatekept; I want proper research, and many doctors will ignore the potential for Lupus in men BECAUSE they are men. THAT is a problem, and it skews results and Lupus can kill. Many illnesses have less studies, information, research done for certain categories who are afflicted by said illness because those affected don't go out and get help or treatment until it's too late, especially speaking towards men. Pretending like men can't have Lupus can and DOES kill. I do believe things could have been put a bit more eloquently, but this isn't formed as a "My journey to the diagnosis of Lupus" but just as "I had a health scare and I'm concerned." He has spoken many times on his anxiety, and he is just voicing his worries. It is human to be worried. Men chronically struggle to go and get help for their health issues, and to have it fought so "valiantly" by Jake while he is parading around "I am a voice for chronic illness!" is crazy to me as he has done the opposite and it creates more fear for men to speak up about A. Lupus, or B. being sick and being concerned about results. We ALL get scared by results!!! Stop criminalizing it or trying to cancel somebody for it!

as someone who was literally fired from my last job and had to miss a ton of schooling due to eczema, i always find it odd how people can be so dismissive of how debilitating it actually is. i've dealt with it for the past 2.5 years and it has caused me so much grief. i live a generally happy life but it's hard not to feel like absolute shit at times when your face and neck and hands and arms and legs are quite literally covered in painful, dry, hot, and even at times oozing patches. eyelid and hand eczema in particular is so annoying to have to deal with. i've dealt with acne on and off for over a decade but the embarrassment and shame i feel about my looks from eczema is comparable and at times feels even worse than the anxiety i had as a teenager with painful cystic acne. nothing is more humiliating than seeing the makeup you used to try to cover up all the blotches start to peel off after a few hours. there have been nights where I can only sleep through half of the night bc I can't find a position in which a part of my body feels like it's not on fire. even if you don't have a chronic illness, eczema can cause a lot of pain in someone's life. i can control it to a certain degree now but I (1) get expensive injections for it, (2) i've had to adjust my diet, (3) a lot of products in my home now cater to my sensitivities, (4) i moisturize an annoying amount, (5) my interactions with my cats have become more limited and I (6) had to move out of my family home and (7) have my brother take my dogs bc my eczema was exacerbated by them which has been the most heartbreaking part. it has definitely affected my day to day life and ik i'm not the only one. also, there is no definitive source of eczema but a LOT of the time it has to do with autoimmune issues, it just can't be officially considered a chronic illness bc not everyone with it has it bc of autoimmune reasons.

@Amzzyyo yeah I watched a few of those H3 episodes when they came out, and they truly didn't set off any alarm bells for me in their full context. The whole bit was sort of Ethan making fun of himself for his own health anxiety, which I think resonated with a lot of people bc who hasn't freaked themselves out by googling a symptom or lab result and immediately focusing in on the worst case scenarios on web MD or something.
Jake presents it as this sort of premeditated scam, when I really don't see any evidence for that. He can argue that it's irresponsible. He can even find it offensive. He's entitled to those opinions. However his video is presented as this "gotcha" moment that just falls flat.
It actually ends up coming across very mean spirited towards anyone with undiagnosed health concerns. Autoimmune disease is notoriously difficult to pin down due to the wide range of severity and symptoms, which fluctuate over time. Many autoimmune sufferers are dismissed, ignored, and accused of faking being sick or wanting to be sick for attention for years before being diagnosed. Saying that you can't speak at all about suspected health problems without a formal diagnosis... is kinda not it.

As someone with chronic illness, at some point during the diagnosis process there is a period where you think you have lupus and doctors do tests for them. Just because he doesn’t have lupus doesn’t mean he didn’t have anything. This guy is super condescending, and eczema can be debilitating and I don’t appreciate the way Jake mentions it in the beginning of the video. As someone who follows both of these creators and is also chronically ill... ...getting diagnosed with a lifelong illness is scary. It's so scary. You talk about it with people. You say things that end up being incorrect. Your diagnosis can change and it can become something else. Are you LYING if you thought you had something and you end up not having it? Not at all. As long as a creator is not sitting down and doing a "Beginners Guide to _________", then they're free to do what they want. There are SO MANY disabled creators that have videos like, "My chronic illness journey" where they talk about all the times they were misdiagnosed, where something was missed and they said they had something else, or something developed into something else... That's literally part of what it is to be chronically ill.

Don’t shame someone for seeking diagnosis and worrying about it while they do so (especially if they suffer anxiety). I am an avid H3 fan. It's a running joke that Ethan over embeslishes for comedic purposes, has chronic auto immune issues, and uses his jokes and banter with the crew for relief. Anyone who watches the show regularly can see that the crew and chatters rag on him (with peace and love) for it. Ethan also tells audience memebers to ask RUclips to back charge the donations, and frequently sends chronically ill fans money to pay for treatments. Additionally, an H3 crew member even told Jake not to post it b/c it was silly and would cause Jake backlash.
Death threats are insane, and not cool. Normal people don't do that and I am sure 90% of H3 fans are regular people who wouldn't participate in that all. But Jake put out that video with his full chest and is now expecting Ethan to not comment on it. Jake isn't new to the internet. This isn't a surprise.

I can definitely see where Jake is coming from. From the sounds of it, his childhood was pretty much ruined by chronic illness. Topics of chronic illness like this might be very sensitive to him, and it can definitely make him upset seeing someone talk about chronic illness in a joking way. But, the joking could be apart of Ethan's coping mechanism. I grew up with a chronically ill mom and seeing it from this perspective, I can see why Jake would be rubbed the wrong way by what has been said by Ethan. At the end of the day, people see things differently and people cope differently. Maybe in the process of Ethan trying to cope, he didn't realize that some of the jokes he was saying could have been insensitive. But, I don't think Jake should be sent death threats just for interpreting something a certain way. I think the best thing for Jake to do is to take down the video, explain his perspective and point of view, and probably take some time off. Same, I used to watch Jake a lot. However, he started acting like an authority on chronic illness early. I don't think he thinks he is, but that's about how he acts and comes off honestly. As someone who didn't find out, they had EDS until I was 22, and I'm 34 now. I was absolutely happy and relieved to have answers to the many injuries and issues I've had as a result of this syndrome. I have to see a cardiologist and go see a vascular specialist to monitor more serious issues that my EDS can cause, like heart issues. Now that I have had an official diagnosis for 12 years, and I'm now educated of signs of EDS, I'm not sure how it wasn't caught sooner, but then again the doctors explained I was a, "zebra" not a horse. (For those who don't know, in the medical field you're taught when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.) It's nice having answers when you've been in pain, and having other health issues. It's also nice finding out you're not dying. I also have C-PTSD (professionally diagnosed when I was a teenager, due to severe child abu$e.) Which causes me to have anxiety issues, and like Ethan, my mind honestly sometimes spins out of control with worry when it comes to health issues. Not just my issues, either, but even my kids and husband (I don't voice those scary worries thoughts to them, when it's one of them that's sick), but I do worry. It sucks. I hate seeing Jake's take on this. He's really starting to take things too hard. It's disappointing because I really did like him and his videos, but this is feeling like gatekeeping.

no literally as someone w fibro the whole thought of just letting your doctors take the wheel and not pushing cracked me up!! the number of doctors i had to plead to believe me was horrible, and while similarly not a fan of ethan, i cannot fault someone for being concerned about their health and wanting answers. also the process for getting diagnosed for so many chronic illnesses sucks. once you have certain diagnoses they will just attribute everything to it. worst one was when i got told that my chest pain was just anxiety when i told my doctor i couldn’t sleep lying down due to pain in my chest/feeling like i couldn’t breathe. turned out to be asthma plus costochondritis (def not how u spell it but essentially an inflamed rib cage). both of which ran in my family which the doctor knew and i reiterated. she still refused to believe me and i later went to the ER when it got bad again only to have them do it there and have to pay a ton of money since they were ER doctors and not my gen practitioner:/

I think Jake has the "privilege" (not the right word, but the best I can think of now) of being diagnosed at a young age where his parents were dealing with most of the uncertainty of having no answers.
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia last year. It took years of seeing different doctors and getting different blood tests done. No one had any definitive answers, and I was so confused and stress about my symptoms, that I turned to the internet. Once I had the information to be able to understand what was happening to my body, I was able to bring tons of research articles and books to my doctors who ultimately ended up agreeing with me. Diagnosing chronic illness/pain is so difficult, and a lot of doctors are hesitant because of the chance they could misdiagnose. Plus, I also constantly made jokes about my symptoms to cope with my concerns.
Jake can't tell Ethan how he should be coping with his health issues, especially since ocd-type thinking can often coincide with tourettes. I'm glad you covered this because I couldn't bring myself to watch Jake's video. I knew it would be upsetting considering the amount of time, effort, and research I put into figuring out my own health issues. I think Jake is taking Ethan's jokes seriously based on his own tough journey with chronic illness diagnosis and he's welcome to share that experience with his audience. For someone with a long history of medical issues, a positive/negative test can just be another step in our health journey. As a longtime H3 fan (back in the commentary days), they’ve always had a small yet vocal minority of rabid fans; however, I feel like there is plenty of criticism levied against H3 within the fandom itself. Maybe not as much as there should be, but there is. Just look at the subreddit from time to time.
The Jake Doolittle video is a disingenuous hit piece, in my opinion. I acknowledge my inherent bias as an H3 fan, though. I won’t defend Ethan for everything or even most things, but I believe Jake’s entire video is in bad faith, incredibly pedantic, and borderline lacking empathy.
Health anxiety is real. I think it’s fair to criticize Ethan for using ChatGPT or Googling symptoms. That’s an unhealthy symptom of health anxiety, though. Voicing his concerns about his health on his own podcast doesn’t seem exactly like profiting off of illness, though.

Ethan's process was extremely, extremely typical of adults getting diagnosed! I can't imagine how hard it was for Jake to go through his diagnosis at 12--I'm in no way trying to minimize his experience or say one is worse than the other, just that the emotional process looks completely different when it's a child being told things by adults, vs when you are the adult who has to make all of the decisions. Most adults will never speak with a rheumatologist in their life! The initial appointments are terrifying, and they *feel* like a diagnosis, even though Jake rightly points out that they're just access to the people who can give a diagnosis. If you've been seeing a rheumatologist for almost as long as you can remember, it probably doesn't occur to you the mental/emotional load it takes to be an adult scheduling that appointment knowing there is a chance that you're going to find out your life is about to change in terrifying ways, or even end.
It's a very different experience to getting diagnosed as a child. I'm not at all interested in playing oppression olympics or calling one worse than the other, but you respond very differently as a child than you do as an adult, and claiming that one kind of response is valid and the other kind of response is manipulative and fraudulent is very damaging. Ethan responded the way a lot of chronically ill adults respond to the beginnings of our diagnosis journey. Maybe he turns out to be a healthy able-bodied person, or maybe he actually has an illness (which is, frankly, *likely* given that his mother has chronic illnesses with genetic components, like ulcerative colitis) and this is just the beginning of his misdiagnosis journey (you know, that same misdiagnosis journey that the two experts described experiencing firsthand).

I’ve also really enjoyed jakes videos on disability, but I think he let his own “fallen fan” standing influence his opinions

As someone who has a chronic illness, I think they’re both kinda in the wrong but it doesn’t even matter that much. From what I’ve seen from Jake, he tends to be a bit more speculative and this time it got him into trouble. I initially kind of got where he was coming from because I don’t think Ethan speaks about his health with the most tact. Ethan appears to have some health anxiety and he’s hanging on to anything that might lead to a diagnosis. I get it - the diagnosis process is SO frustrating and exhausting and I had similar conversations with my friends, where I clung to a potential diagnosis. Overall, I think that Ethan could be a little more considerate when he speaks about his health (e.g., not saying he has something he’s not medically diagnosed with, speaking with more kindness to people who are offering suggestions or their experiences) but Jake shouldn’t have made the video. His feelings are valid but they shouldn’t have made their way to RUclips.

I don’t know if I would say his feelings are valid, Jake seemed to be genuinely angry at Ethan for looking into what he could have on stream, given that ya know, his health has been declining on stream for months and his own doctor is obviously looking for a reason for his symptoms. And also seemed to be upset he even dare think he could have lupus when he “only” has gerd and eczema symptoms (which in itself is fucked because both of those chronic illnesses can also be life threatening/devastating)

As someone who is chronically ill and has been my whole life, who only just got a confirmed diagnosis in my 30s (EDS and Silk Road Disease), I think Ethan talking about his health concerns is fine
I don’t like a lot of the things he’s done in the past, but him relating how his own health concerns have made HIM feel to people talking about struggling with their own health is just how people relate to things a lot, ESPECIALLY when it comes to jokes about it, because anything health-related IS scary 🤷
