I was one half of Kit and the Widow. West End shows, TV specials, an aeon ago. Very often I was asked, Aren't you Hinge and Brackett out of drag? What a compliment! Seriously.
Remembering George Logan who sadly passed away yesterday, and his partner in comedy, Patrick Fyffe. A truly marvellous double act, the likes of which we are unlikely to see again.
I had the privelege of briefly meeting Patrick Fyffe back in 2000. He was so full of 'life' and vitality and such an entertaining personality even when he wasn't performing, even though he was in fact, very ill at the time. I also had the privelege of singing/performing the 'Cat's Chorus', with another girl, when i was a school girl in the 70's.
This is stratospherically above a drag act. They are two "living" characters who have such depth and skill and know their audience which in so many ways they created.
I'm embarrassed to tell you I didn't know they were a couple of fellas till I read your post. The last time I saw them I was about 10 and it was a very funny scene with a typewriter and a drink of sorts
My grandparents went to their graves believing that they TRULY WERE two spinsters! I remember explaining that they were men, "you know, like Danny LaRue." To which they in unison replied "don't be silly boy, of course they're women"
You are so right. Even down to the tiny subtlety of movements you see in ladies of a certain age. They really were first rate at what they did. Wonderful entertainers and performing artists.
Those of us of a "certain age" will no doubt recall elderly relatives who resembled these immaculately created characters, so fondly portrayed here. Talent of a rare kind that was itself intrinsically kind to its invented creations.
Hi there, I love Hinge and Bracket. They were so talented and when I watch them it makes me laugh. I was 30 when they first came on TV. I am now 66 and have redescovered them recently.
I remember when this was first broadcast, I was still in primary school. "Tiddle pom, stretch clap" - " she thinks she`s Eileen Fowler". Brings it all back!
I met these ladies a few times and they were so much fun in real life. We weren't friends as such, we just moved in the same circles and I saw them out of drag which was such a surprise as they were very different to their characters. I was saddened to hear that George Logan died a few days ago. Patrick of course died in 2002.
They are absolutely fabulous! Wonderful characters and real musical talent. And Dame Hilda's voice is wonderful covering chest- and headvoice. Bravo!!!
Wow what a blast from the past, all I was doing was thinking, ooh I've not had a Sherry for years and Hinge and Bracket came flooding back. Gosh how utterly wonderful. Thank-you for the upload.
Lovely to see these two ladies again just after hearing that George Logan had passed away. I've also read all the comments written here over the years and they have made me laugh as much as H&B did. Most get it, some don't, and that make it see even more entertaining! To see that George Logan also followed these comments and tributes from Kit H-H was humbling and touching. Thank you so much for bringing this harmless and wonderful humour back into the light.
Wonderful, wonderful, what an entertainment. Patrick Fyffe was a genius. On one occasion when I met him, he told me there was about a foot of snow that night, the audience were indeed lucky to get there at all ! = or get out afterwards - dont suppose they would have cared if they stayed all night, Hilda would have kept going till dawn ! Marvellous!
I so agree. Patrick was magic. Although you knew they were 2 men pretending to be old ladies by the end of the evening the spell had worked and you were totally believing in the world of Hinge and Bracket. I was fortunate to have seen them live on 3 or 4 occasions and they always seemed better suited to live theatre. There's nothing like this today and we are all the poorer for it.
as a Boy Growing up in the 70s It was always are Are they arnt they . Mum are those two Men. Hinge and Bracket and their TV show Dear Ladies. was just a Riot of camp silliness
@@weepingwillow-ud6xl - It's thrilling to think that there are people on RUclips that will 'get' the act; it's also depressing to think that there will be many who haven't got a clue what it's all about, starting with the costumes and accents and ending with the period setting and brilliant stage chemistry. Female impersonators probably get burned at the stake in America these days...
I feel you did need a certain mindset to appreciate this very talented duo. Comedy is very much subjective like art, music, drama, films or plays. The critics can almost be the wolf in sheep's clothing, guiding them to the enclosure. Gaining their trust by writing a wonderful review, but the next might be so scathing they might never perform again.
Talk back was remembering shows, acts & songs of yesteryear. These two, were in our house, were a must watch. I do not think my parents ever realesed about Hinge & Bracket, yet they oved the show & were a bit sad when it stopped.
Patrick Fyffe (Dame Hilda),had a cameo role on the film 'Steptoe rides again' his name on the credits was 'Perry St Clair', no doubt his name when a solo act.
I had the pleasure of having a delightful conversation with the two of them one evening after a performance in Taunton while they were in a local club.
At the time the wonderful Hinge & Bracket graced our screens, I had an equally wonderful great aunt, who took a lot of convincing that they were actually two men.
Pure joy. Does anyone know of a tribute act? My father wasn't too keen on me liking this duo as a young one. I loved them and they used to make me laugh. They were both funny & were part of my childhood. When I was told by my mother who they were, I loved them even more. My mother & I are both fans to this day. Going to look for DVD's so I can take with me, next time I visit. Thank you so much for posting. This is brilliant, I am most thankful that you have shared a memory of my past.
@@adelucas4824 hello, thank you for your reply & advice. Yes, I have searched & drained RUclips for scenes or full episodes & have been delighted that folk post them as it really entertains me. one word - sad - but thank you for the memories, sorry more than one word RIP
I went to see them in concert and it was wonderful. Full of fun, beautiful music and poignant songs. It was a night to remember.

Cat's Duet, not Cat's Chorus.
Patrick Fyffe had a fantastic female singing voice. I'm no music expert, but I assume he was a counter tenor?
In a perfect world, they would be my two great aunts who come to visit at Christmas.
so true wouldn't that have been fun
A most astute observation...I'm having that👍
This is stratospherically above a drag act. They are two "living" characters who have such depth and skill and know their audience which in so many ways they created.

Dame Hilda is not just technically excellent, there is such character and joie de vivre in her voice. Pure gold
I had no idea, until YEARS after they'd stopped working, that they weren't women. No idea at all. Love them so much

One of my favourite memories is seeing this wonderful duo at Birmingham Town Hall. I doubt there was a dry eye in the place from all of the laughing.
Glad I saw them in their heyday - a true British pantomime pair who were tuneful and funny. Dear Dame Hilda - sadly missed.
These were brilliant seen them live on several occasions Excellent evenings entertainment Excellent falsetto singing by Hilda Brackett
