"Have you ever seen a movie?!" Is exactly how I felt when people didn't understand my American accent when I was living in Australia. You turn on the T.V. and there's more American programming than Australian.
It’s because the “American” accent we all hear on tv is not an actual American accent. There are many, many different accents here in America. What you see on TV is a “Hollywood” accent. Go around and talk to real American’s of all walks of life and compare their accents to what you hear on TV. It will rarely be the same.

We're German, but we have family in the US who my dad regularly talks to and whom he once spend a year with, so he is way more fluent in English than me, but when I showed him one of your videos, he afterwards told me that he had some trouble understanding what you said, while I usually understand it perfectly

I grew up in Toronto, Canada. The only accents I have problems with are British, Scottish and Irish. When I watched Game of Thrones I always needed to have subtitles on, otherwise I would not understand most of the lines. My parents are Brazilian and I speak Portuguese too, most times when a show is in British English I just change it to Portuguese dubbing, it's perfect to understand. As an Australian, even I wouldn't know. I think it might be because "the grocery store" is such a formal term to us (yet ambiguous at the same time), whereas we'd just say the name of the grocery store and most Australians would understand. I hope that makes some sense to you. (I tried...😅)

I was watching an interview on TV with my girlfriend. She turned to me and said I understand what the guy in the middle saying but what language are the other 2 guys speaking. It was an Englishman an Australian and an American. When I tried to explain to her that they were all speaking English with slightly different accents she just couldn't seem to wrap her brain around it. It's a good thing she was beautiful because she didn't have much else going on. And yes we're both Americans so no big surprises there.
