Absolutely gut wrenching, lump in my throat, kind of music. I always listen to it alone. The song is one of those rarities which grabs you by the heart and does not let go. Both the DCD version and Bauhaus's rendition are equally amazing. Play back to back and repeat. 🎧
I saw this live in Seattle and then a day or two later in Vancouver B.C. in like 1998... I didn't know it was coming. I nearly passed out...I swear I didn't take a breath for several moments....My brain just stopped working....
Peregrine C I saw them perform this last night. Same! It was phenomenal and grabbed ahold of me and didn’t let go. I woke up smiling just thinking about it.
Same here. I caught them in Philly on their reunion tour. Knew every song they played frontwards, backwards, sideways, studio version and live version. Then they broke out into this, and a glowing halo lowered and I witnessed the greatest thing outside of the birth of my kids as Pete, his voice, the band just literally stopped time for what seemed an eternity lost inside this song. Amazing moment that I'll take to the grave with me.
I heard the original in 1994....I heard this version today for the first time. I can't say the cover is better though. Not that I don't mind cover songs (Apocalyptica and Cannons) but the original song was more like a trip to a world long forgotten while this song is more like a trip to the stars yet explored.
Never knew Bauhaus did a DCD cover. It's kind of ironic, becuase Peter and Brendan had planned a mutual tour in 2010 which eventually didn't happen. The whole situation ended in public slams, accusations and negativity. Even the fans were commeting and arguing on various message boards/fb trying to defend their idols and prove that the other one was wrong. I guess Peter Murphy burried the hatched (or maybe not?) because he recently performed that song live both solo and in Bauhaus.
Both the original DCD and the Bauhaus version tear my heart out. There are no words that are worthy.
