'Just a ghost town': The Northern Peninsula and its population predicament

- Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula is being hollowed out, and according to a recent study, it's only going to get worse. Reporter Terry Roberts went to the "forgotten coast" to speak with residents about the issues the area is facing.

Wow! I lived in St. Anthony for a few months back in 2003. It was in trouble then. I moved back to Nova Scotia. This video was done in 2016 and it's sad to see now. Another commenter on here suggested advertising St. Anthony for writers and artists. As a writer myself, I have to say that is an excellent suggestion. It's so beautiful there and it would be a haven.
Many parts of Western Newfoundland are also in trouble, not just the Northern Peninsula, but especially Corner Brook whom has endured 50 consecutive years of population decline.
I heard it in the news again last year that the idea of a land link to Labrador is being considered. This could be an economic boom for the northern peninsula.
Offer a free houses and you will have immediate responds. You can't expect successful professionals to move there, but you can give a chance for better life to peoples on welfare or disability. At today economic it is a lot of peoples who don't have any addiction problems, but simply loose there jobs and struggle to survive in the big city.
This is happening to a lot of places around Newfoundland. You’ll see a big resettlement in the decades to come . Our provincial government don’t understand how to manage this province like a business unfortunately.
There have been a lot of bad decisions and even corruption that has hurt Newfoundland. Now we’re going to feet the pain as people move away, and communities shrivel down to nothing. I’m a business owner and the government is slowly driving me to up-root and move my family out of Newfoundland for good

With the advent of remote work, perhaps the federal government can incentivize new residents by offering tax free living and investing in high speed internet?
I love Newfoundland and as a remote tech worker myself would move there in a heartbeat. So peaceful and beautiful.
Its not just the Northern Peninsula losing people, so is most of Western Newfoundland.
Corner Brook as endured population declines for 50 years in a row, St. Anthony for nearly 30 years.
Not only is Corner Brook's population decline a concern, so is their demographics as nearly 1/2 the Western Newfoundland city's population are seniors or low income earners.
Corner Brook is already seeing evidence of decline as some shopping malls like Valley Mall and Millbrook Mall are struggling to look for tenants as you see "For Lease" signs almost everywhere.
It's not only your community it's all N.L that's loosing young people because of lack of employment.They move to bigger centers to probably get ahead but not for a better life style but for a better living.When I grew up at home there were about 600 plus people now there are less than 130 living now and most are pensioners.The school houses 80 students for 5 communities.
There is a worldwide trend towards urbanization but in NL, more of. Fishing hasn't been regarded as a future or a profitable trade for decades. Since about 2005, the population is slowly(very much) increasing. But, NL has the oldest population in Canada and decades of outmigration have changed the province completely. Oil revenue and oil jobs likely can't be the future. A shrinking tax base does not aid in planning for the future or even providing present needs.
I would love to spend the warmer months in NL to escape the BC noise, although I really don't know how to travel back to BC easily and have the peace of mind that the properties in NL can stay safe.
Obviously your BC is defined as the "Lower Mainland" (metro Vancouver). That is 1/300 of the land area of the province.

Build tourist infrastructure; market yourself. Get experts to look into the matter. Keep prices low and then offer higher end services.
100% THIS. Not only tourist infrastructure but they should also market themselves as a hub for factories which is a win-win: make a deal for cheap location costs/ tax breaks for factory owners and good pay for workers = economic boom.
Being **reliant** on tourism before covid was a terrible idea, and it's an even worse idea now. Tourism should be a part of your economy but not the dominant part, otherwise, your future's going to be built on sand.
Offer the space as a writer and artist ‘retreat’. You might get surprised.

There's lots more to see at Lanse aux Meadows now. Very interesting place. And St. Anthony's is a really nice town. Sad to see it decline.

It must be so hard to finance the essential services; education and health services....without strong tax base....

No one allowed it. Their economy fizzled out, people moved on... it's an isolated community, and society's moving toward interconnectivity.
Why so sad? There have been lots of towns that are abandoned do to economics or freeways by passing a town and it no longer gets enough money to survive. It's just change. I'll tell you one thing my husband has had 4 major carriers. Each change do to economics. But no oh wow is me, just hitting the pavement and reinventing him self to keep his family feed.
A ghost town means nobody lives there.
So give it back to nature.

There you go playing the blame game. It's always someone else's fault. Not just plain and simple economic change. My husband and I drove a long haul truck. Sorry can't remember the town may have been in Canada . But we picked up tanned cow hides and took them to Mexico. At the front of this plant was the story of how this plant go there. They said that this was a farming community for many years. But as the kids grew up and no longer worked the farms and left the town was dieing. So they had many meetings on what to do. One farmer donated his land and they all started to make inquiries for a business to come in. Hence the tanning co. which employed many and this supported the town shops. So pull up your big boy pants and don;'t sit around waiting for someone else to solve your problems.
This may not sound nice to many people but only immigration can fix this. Canadians with higher lifestyle would rarely want to live and work in rural areas

Re settlement is what is needed in nfld. Move everyone to the larger area's . Save tax dollars and develope new jobs .

I think it's kind selfish to keep your children in such a desperate situation just because you want to cruise around in your boat and snowmobile and shoot moose. Living the lifestyle you want without regards for your family. This could very well have long-term consequences on your children. They are not getting the quality of education, part-time job opportunities, or social interaction that is so crucial to their development. In the end, you'll reap what you sow.
