    • @manuelbonet
      @manuelbonet 3 года назад +19

      Seeing your personal involvement in the situation and if you don't mind me asking, what's your personal opinion on the moratorium? As an outsider, I can see that it is a measure to try to restore the ecosystem after the aggressive fishing practices that took place in the region, but it is undeniable that it has also negatively affected the economies of these small communities, so I was wondering how people in the region feel about the cod moratorium.

    • @brodyharris7843
      @brodyharris7843 3 года назад +52

      @@manuelbonet I see the moratorium as a necessary evil. Growing up surrounded by fishing families and coming from one myself I can see that everyone wants to be able to return to the way of life their ancestors practiced for generations. But I also understand that it’s not going to be sustainable if the moratorium is lifted before the populations recover. Cod fishing is a part of life here and while the moratorium certainly took that from the people it’s also one of the few preventative measures that could’ve been put in place to preserve that way of life for the future generations.

    • @vigilantcosmicpenguin8721

    • @liesdamnlies3372
      @liesdamnlies3372 3 года назад +12

      If there’s a big lesson here, it’s that the moratorium didn’t come nearly fast enough, and our navy didn’t start turning-away foreign vessels fast enough either. This collapse is devastating and really shows the damage we can do as a species when we mismanage natural resources so badly.

My grandfather was born on one of these in 1920s, eventually the island was abandoned and they moved to the Gander area of Newfoundland. When I was little we could take a skidoo on the sea ice all the way to the old settlement, it's been about 5-6 years since that was possible thanks to lack of ice.... Having never heard of this place before watching this video, I get the impression that the government of Canada handled the relocation about as well as a national government could. Not that there's any way to make it a good experience for the residents, but the 90 percent vote thing impressed me. I took it as meaning, "We won't force you to move if you really don't want to, but we do really, really think you should." Can anyone with more direct experience correct my perception?

    • @matthewbriffett4184
      @matthewbriffett4184 3 года назад +1

      Well no one really felt relocation improved their lives. Originally there wasn't much choice in the matter, the revival in the 2000s was much more humane. That said most people only leave because they're getting older and need access to services as well as a lack of work for their younger families. I'm sure more than 90% would not have relocated if they could reasonably stay or they really had a choice in the original instances.

    Is there a reason the video has black bars on the top and bottom of the video? It looks like the video was accidentally rendered in 16:9 when the video isn't 16:9 so when you go to make full screen on an ultrawide monitor there is a huge black border around the whole video

    Perhaps you could make a video about the stilt houses of the Kampong Phluk village in Cambodia. I have been there during the dry season when the water was low but all of the buildings are on stilts to deal with the rising waters during the rainy season.

      Backup plans are hard when geography-based industry is the only reason it exists in the firstplace.
      Pre modern-industrislisation, it worked well enough for most of human history when these activities were sustainable.
