@Danny overhands ARE a variety of a hook. Not really trained when running the basics to a rookie- it's jabs, crosses, uppercuts, & hooks. 4 punches. Whatever variation you're thinking of, its of those 4 legal punches in Boxing. A power jab is still a jab.
@@SteCoughlan he is a legendary trainer and boxing historian. He knows all todays fighters like the back of his hand he lives boxing and I trust his every word.
The all around wisdom this man has is unparalleled. Not just in boxing, but in normal life to. Doesn't matter if your a boxing fan or not teddy has great stories and lessons to be learnt
Teddy the best in explicating not only the practicality of pugilism but also on how it's relative or applicable to everyday life! Keep bringing it Teddy Atlas!
Some nostalgic people talk about the 80´s and the 90´s being better times in everything, and I agree, I´m a 90´s guy and I can relate to that, but I also thanks the 2000´s for the existence of RUclips and having the opportunity to learn from a legendary trainer like Teddy Atlas is.
I was born in '80. I've been watching boxing since then. Then '93 rolls around and this little thing called the ufc started, so we got into that....been a fight fan my ENTIRE life....no one and I mean no one has the info like Teddy does. I absolutely love the guy
Great story and simple but AWESOME technique! I just did it now a couple of times (I'm on a snack break at work and just checked this out) and I'm certainly going to implement this technique on my training sessions! Thank you very much, Coach! Best regards from Brazil!
I love when teddy atlas said tyson needed to make him throw the jab... I've been boxer over 20 years and in my teens when I was competing heavy my favorite thing to do was spsr round after rounds sometimes up too 30 rounds of scarring with different sparring partners and I learned on my own even without my trainer learning that too me who is my favorite trainer ice ever had including Joe Cortez, doc brodus, Bob foster and Michael carbajol, and it was to set traps by luring and making other boxers throw certain punches so I could counter or catch them if I noticed there hands dropping after throwing certain punches
Thanks for the story about that bad habit. I notice I would do the same at times. I’ve actually been working on that on the past year or so to fix those mistakes.
I didn't know you had a yt channel teddy! ...just subbed! ..this is as close as im gna get to training with you!! I often hear u commenting...i really like how u explain things and techniques...your stories are gems...you can apply them not only in boxing but also in life. I appreciate you teddy. Thanks!
He's always 100% right and shows phenomenal workouts for boxers, this specific workout is good for fighters that use the conventional up n down or peek a boo type defense on the other hand it wouldn't be as good of a workout for any fighter that uses the shoulder roll or "Philly shell" because on defense that right hand will move on both sides of your head.. It still is a great workout for all boxing styles even the shoulder roll just not as effective for that specific defense
The man who taught me to box had a wicked left hook, battle tested in the GG. I quickly learned not to drop my right when jabbing. And how to reset a broken nose…😎 I have had to have a go a few times in the street and one of the first things I check is my cover.
My trainer used to put a leaf in between my right glove and my head and another one between my left shoulder and my chin. Then he’d have me move around the ring. For the first 2 months that’s all I did. Never threw a punch for 2 whole months
Teddy's knowledge of the physical, technical part of boxing is next level but his deep understanding of the mental side, the spiritual aspect is what sets him apart.
One of my first trainers started me out with my right hand blocking all the way up to the top of my head because he knew natural digression would lower it down to wear it should be.
The jab is probably what you should try and work on the most more than all other punches...because you work almost everything off the jab..including finding range, keeping your opponent at bay so he doesn't charge in and put pressure on you...and so many more...makes sense why people still call boxing the sweet science.
One of my old coaches would have someone hold a pinky ball or tennis ball against their face with the left hand. Often when you "just" practice holding the left hand at your ear you don't realize the left hand has dropped. This way if you were practicing alone at home or your coach was watching someone else, the ball would drop on the ground and you knew you were making the error.
Was in the gym today holding my right ear, thowing left jabs, looking a bit odd. Ha ha ha. Thanks to Teddy Atlas. His book is also worth a read guys and gals. Great story.
I like listening to. Teddy Atlas about Boxing everything come from the Jab. What Teddy said about, Carl Williams when he use to. Throw his Jab he use to drop. His right hand Mike Tyson knocked him out. In a round, Teddy Atlas know his boxing he has trained a Number of. World Champions. 🥊🌍
If you want to improve for a quicker jab try this. wear a long sleeve loose shirt with the cuffs undone. even better if the sleeve has more than one button (on the cuff) to adjust the looseness and tightness. aim for the snapping sound when the arms fully extended. You'll know the right sound to aim for is a sharp snap. the louder the harder. remember to always retract the arm after throwing the jab. Once you master it aim for the same snapping sound twice in a row and so on. Sound is the key. aim for a sonic boom.
Watch how Lennox Lewis used to jab in his later career. Thats how tall fighters should fight in hw boxing. He almost leaned on them with the jab holding the jab on their faces and bam! Big right haymakers overhands uppercuts from a long distance. Also his double jab, the way he came with a slow half jab then followed up with a heavy long jab was pure masterclass. He didnt even need to put speed on it just perfect timing and positioning.
Lennox Lewis had the best jab ever in boxing !!!,hes 1-2 was immense, klitschko copied him,Larry Holmes had good jab and Bob foster to,but in any combat fighting everything is set up by the jab most important weapon to have in your tool box !!,
My name was Carl Williams in about 2014 I use to do the same thing until I ate the hardest left hook I’ve ever been hit with for breakfast that was the last time I ever drop my hands in striking range. I’ll never forget that shit I went home with a headache that didn’t go away for like a week and a half. The whole room stopped like I got into a car accident, I could barely see for a few seconds, all I heard was whomp whomp whomp in my ears that shit was bad. Never again lol. I’m definitely gonna start using this ear grabbing technique when I practice from now on I might even dedicate rounds with an s on the end just to grabbing my ear and throwing jabs from now on. Thank you teddy atlas.
I could listen to this man talk all day there’s a story that’s associated with every technique and why you do it thank you Mr. Atlas
Coach Anthony is another gem of a trainer on youtube too
Ask him a simple question and you can.
My thoughts exactly.
... "you might get a longer ear but it will come back'.. Teddy is the best :)
Teddy could probably have a ted talk for every punch in boxing.😁
aladious H ...indeed., a TED' Talk!
@@rareearthelement8698 well, there are about only 4 allowed punches in Boxin to be fair... its the combos that are mesmerizing

That I a fact!
Except he still didn't explain how to improve yoir jab.
