Mark Farner is all class, with a forgiving heart and desire to play with the band and their fans. Get together Grand Funk, before time makes it too late.
I met him in Dallas in 1981 after a concert when they got back together minus Mel for those two albums during the early 80`s and we talked for about 10 minutes and he was about as down to earth as he was in this video, just a normal dude.
My God! How huge they were and the great songs Mark and Co. wrote! It's criminal they're not in the R-n-R Hall of Fame! Yes, do a reunion now before it's too late!
I can’t believe some of the shit bag bands and people they put in the HoF. The original GFR should have been in before bands like Journey, Dolly Parton etc
If there was a reunion tour, it would be huge. One of my first concerts as a 16 year old was Grand Funk at Dallas Memorial Auditorium in 1971. There are still millions and millions of fans out there. Bury the hatchet . Forgive each other. Come together for something bigger than yourselves. The World would love you for it.
Mark Farner has got to be one of a way too few great individuals in the music industry. I hope he gets his dream of getting on stage with Mel and Don. It would be one of the greatest events ever!!!
Pray about it, Brother Mark, and we will do the same. As for Don and Mel, a little prayer on their part wouldn't hurt! 🙏 God bless you and your family, Mark. Thanks, Br. John! Peace and love, as always!
I saw Mark all over the midwest. Without Mark, Grand Funk would not have been a thing! A true entertainer. Come to Indy please, I'll come to see ya for sure!
I'm 61 years old and still playing bass in a bar band because of Grand Funk and a few other bands. When I was a kid and I heard Aimless Lady I knew what I wanted to do. Still love their music and always will.
Please guys, Mark, Don & Mel... it's well overdue for the original GFR to do the right thing for us, the fans. Do it while you can. There's absolutely no reason NOT to. I'm pleading the case that MANY have been hoping for many years. Thank you, Mark for being such a genuine soul & walking the walk.
I saw the current lineup of what is being called, “Grand Funk,” back in 2019. Best I can say is it was an “approximation” of the band. Without Mark Farner there is no GFR. It’s those three (four if you count Craig Frost) that have the special magic. Like most fans I’d welcome a reunion of Mark, Don, and Mel!
You are much nicer than I am about their sound, yes, the music is there but it lacks the passion and feeling of what Farner brought to the group, the energy and power is completely missing in the Brewer and Mel version of the band, the magic just isn`t there.
Unconditionally the best of the best, Grand Funk! Reunion? I am an old man now but I guarantee I would buy and travel the globe just to hear Grand Funk live.
Something tells me the reason it will never happen is because of Mark's patriotism and converting to Christianity. If Mark is a Trump supporter and they are not, then it won't happen. That's how stupid and divisive we've become.
I have seen Marks band several times across the years and it is much easier for Mark to be Grand Funk replacing a Drummer and Bass player than Grand Funk attempting to replace Mark which was the leading force in the band!
I saw GFR when they were the biggest band in the world 1971 . Winston Salem N. C. They had Bloodrock open for them. Then I saw them at least 3 or 4 other times. Their Grand Funk Railroad( the red album ) album was always my favorite. And I must've played their Live album a zillion time. I always loved the intro Are You Ready !! GREAT STUFF !!
Mark Farner is one of the most, if not THE most, inspirational people I've ever heard speak, particularly in interviews like this. He is so knowledgeable and good-spirited and definitely knows how to get his good points across. He not only used a Messenger (guitar), but he IS a "messenger", let's put it that way. ;-)
Mark please keep after the boys to do this, it would mean the world to me. I'm nearly 70 and I don't know how much time I have left. I want to see you guys before I check out, it would be a dream come true. Do a coast to coast Canadian tour and start it in Newfoundland. Please let it happen . God bless you guys now and always . Rock On !!!!!
I have a ‘75 Ibanez “Lawsuit” double neck with Mark, Don, & Mel’s autographs. Even though Sunny got it signed for me, I CHERISH the memory of seeing them from the front row, and the thrill of having her bring it out to me during the show!
Brother Mark..as a young guy, you taught me rock guitar..my first garage band went bananas for GFRR!. Love you, love GFRR..I am half Hopi my brother, another hard rock native..rock on!
I saw the current “Grand Funk Railroad” a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t seek out a ticket because a friend called me with that. Reason is that I saw these guys in 1971,1972, and the 1996 reunion tour. That music, mainly written by Mark, is timeless. The 5 man GFR ( I should say the cover band ) operating under their GFRR name, has tried to even change the setlist to diminish Mark’s writings. The singer is ok. He had a hit with .38 Special. Ok. Good guitarist. Good keyboardist. Decent band. But only a cover band. I don’t - and probably no one really knows - what’s underlying with these 3. I don’t care. I do know - as a hardcore GFRR fan since a kid, I’d like to see them reconvene and play a real tour. The 96 show was musically better than the early 70’s. Guys, set aside the bs ego trips. Play the damn music already. Life is short, and shorter every minute. Don’t blow this chance.
I agree with the sentiments. When I saw them recently they played some drum thing that wasn’t needed (and waaaay too long), a 20+ minute version of heartbreaker (too long-lost the crowd energy, people just go get beer), and the 38 Special song. 70 minutes of music that was 40 minutes of yawn. Mark would never have that happen
@@Hangover_Bear Good point. The drum thing was really weak. Just a time filler. And I promise people don’t come to hear a .38 Special song. I’ll not be going to another show of theirs.
Interesting it takes a singer AND another guitarist to fill Mark's shoes... the current Grand Funkless can't hold a candle to Farner's American Band!! Ever since he tricked Mark out of the rights to the GFR name Brewer's the one with the ego trip...
All i can say is that Grand Frunk Railroad changed my life both as a drummer and personally way back in 1971, the first time I saw them live at the L.A. Forum.
I saw Grand Funk twice back in their heyday...early 70's...and they were a phenomenal live band. I also had the privilege of meeting Mark personally in the 90's, hanging with him on his tour bus, just talking and reminiscing and he was the most natural guy. Nothing was out of bounds conversationally. Very honest human. I would love to see a Grand Funk reunion (I won't go see the current version) but I doubt it will happen. I'm happy with the memories.
Man, I love Farner! I was such a GF fan! I grew up in the 60’s, in London Ontario - two hours from Detroit! And……ALL the amazing music that was generated in the Motor City. People think about NYC, New Orleans, Chi-town, and Los Angeles, but Detroit was as potent a music “laboratory” as any US city, and world city! Detroit Rocks! Long will the mighty Grand Funk live in my memories! Peace
The situation between those three has been so convoluted. God knows what’s really going on…..so confusing. I tend to believe Mark; I adore his work and outlook on life.
Mark was a major influence to me as a young teen learning to play Guitar 🎸. As was Dick Wagner, who was a influence to Mark. What a great guy, with so much wisdom. GFR, those 3 definitely have the Chemistry. Would love to see a Reunion. 😀 Love you Brother Mark. Much Love from, your Hometown, the D..Jer
I am 71 and loved this interview with Mark and loved GFR from the beginning and really hope the others will finally come around before its too late and as far as I am concerned screw the RNR Hall of fame
Mark, Don and Mel…the only ingredients necessary to hear GFR..these guys are really something on stage..I mean it..there’s a good reason why RailRoad is so appropriate to this band. Most every song ended with a Locomotive chug and drive to it that it became infectious. Three times I’ve seen them and all three times I was physically beat up. They are that good together. And they need each other on stage…it can be no other way. Bless you boys!! Agree to split it equally three ways or all of ya do it for free.. whatever it takes
There tends to be a lawyer or manager that throws a wrench in reunions happening because they "earn their keep" when band members feud and sue each other. There had to have been millions of people who saw Bob Seger's final tour wondering why Mark wasn't in GFR, when he still sounded great. The first time bands break up, it's usually because they crash and burned and were still pretty wild, but then a reunion and a rift tends to have a lot more bitterness the second time around. How many of us keep in touch with old high school friends, but maybe there's one or two we're perfectly fine with never speaking to ever again?
I have been a fan of Grand Funk since the red album! I was very fortunate to see the original Grand Funk three times! They are still my favorite band!!
I believe without a doubt that Mark Farner has it within him to offer up ONE more (With respect to history I'll use the term "album" of new great GFR songs before all us ole timer fan leave this earth. The only question is are the other two guys mature enough and smart enough to see the gold and JUST DO IT !!!!

If you haven't experienced what Mark is talking about, it's really impossible to know or understand the illusion we all live. But there is another reality that shares the same space.
Without Mark in GFR, it is just a GFR tribute band. One more time, guys! I saw them in 1971 and then the reunion tour. One last tour is long overdue. Come on, Don and Mel! Do it for the fans who have been with you all for decades. What would be even better is to have a new CD of new music, followed by a tour.
I have all the music they ever put out ,my older brothers albums ,of Grand funk are awesome music ,I would pay to see Mark Mel an Don yes I would ,it would be cool to see them at Atwood stadium in flint Michigan ,it's an outside place
I saw them both group recently, and I really think no one have the perfect group, Mark need Mel and Don, and Don & Mel needs Mark big time, for the perfect trio...we deserve that reunion before we leave this physical body soul case...please you were unique trio!!! well the perfect "Quattro"...
I love fact that Mark is part Native Cherokee. I always thought you reminded me of native Cherokee during Grand Funks heyday. Very broad shoulders, long straight hair, muscular, I saw your videos riding horses and motorcycles etc. It was awesome! Much respect for you Mark!
As a huge fan there is no Grand Funk without Mark Farner as far as i'm concerned as he wrote most of the classic material. I respect Don & Mel for the parts they played in the classic era but from everything i have read and researched Mark pretty much got royally screwed by his bandmates, more so mel, and past management too, which is nothing new in the history of the music business. I haven't and won't spend a penny on anything GF unless Mark is involved and fully credited and paid for his mass influence and creative part of what made Grand Funk-period!! but i have a VERY hard time seeing and believing Mel wanting to do anything with Mark in fear of loosing anything of what he sees as his total baby at this point and has for a long time which is where i lost total respect for him other than for what he contributed in the beginning. and nothing against Bruce Kulick in the current tribute version of the band-he's a class act and a great person making a living and there's nothing wrong with that at all, BUT, it's not and will NEVER be Grand Funk without Mark out in front and a full member of the band as he shouild be!!!!
Oh please reunite and tour... and if so would itbee too much to ask for a new album?... You're right, too much. I just had to throw that out there. Oh man a tour would be so cool!
As much as I adore GFR the others don't deserve to share the stage with Mark after how they robbed and screwed him. Mark is being extremely gracious. People would go nuts if it happened but would not respect the other members. It would be bitter sweet for the true fans of GFR that have and value integrity.
Fans have have wanted a reunionfor over the last 40 years! But if they did ever have a reunion I don't know if it would survive the big fist fight back in the rehearsal hall while rehearsing for the show!
🙀Although Mark Farner is not alluding to the fact that he had a Spiritual conversion in his life awhile back, and it was a huge life changer for Mark. That is something that one can never forget, nor ever want to. Along with a peaceful disposition, your attitude regarding humanity changes. Regardless, I'm sure Mark would never have any reservations about not wanting to reunite with the other band members. Yes, a GFR reunion with Mark, Mel and Don would be epic and colossal because whenever working together, both past and present, they create a magic that nobody else can duplicate or even come close to. Come on boys, please, lets do it !!! for the sake of all of you guy's and the sake of sooooo many fans out there that are all hoping to see this happen.
GFR should never have broke up. The would have had some lean years through Disco, New Wave and Glam Metal but they would have taken their rightful place as one of the greatest of Rock ' n Roll once they weathered the storm.
Don and Mel wanting to be involved would be awesome!🎸🎸 🥁 Brother Mark and John! They would make a gazillion dollars! But that's the wrong reason. But how do you do it without it?
If GFR did a reunion tour, they couldn't print tickets fast enough. So many of the guys I jam with and gig with , all talk about how much we loved the ORIGINAL GFR. I remember seeing them for the first time at Pirates World in Florida... and was absolutely blown away. Hooked from the opening chords... Do it...
That would be fantastic, with the right incentive...(I don't dare to use the word)...they would probably fill the biggest arenas around the US: Rose Bowl, Michigan Stadium, Cotton Bowl, Tiger Stadium, Beaver Stadium etc, what I mean is that we really never have celebrated (and saluted all of those who were taken from us too soon) the fantastic era of (1955) 1965-1975 and all the exceptional cultural history that was created then, I can think of only one occasion when we have tried to capture the soul, spirit, and essence of that and that was the 25th Anniversary of Woodstock in 1994...there were magnificent moments but the press never understood what that kind of reunion really is all about and sad to say some portions of the audience never had a clue either, people all over the world love America and phenomena like these because they couldn't have happened anywhere else, we owe much to America (and Great Britain) and so many of us would like to feel the old spirit/love again (we are tired of oppresive and totalitarian religions and ideologies and we must turn around 180 degrees and pick up the good pieces and build from there again, remember we all agreed on that in 1945). God bless our common existence!!!
Without Mark there will never be GFR, that Red Album did it for me. and still does at 68 years of age. Thanks John!
Mark Farner is all class, with a forgiving heart and desire to play with the band and their fans. Get together Grand Funk, before time makes it too late.
For the sake of emphasis, methinks that you should've capitalized "Time"

@@Thataintnothing and Grand Funk deserves to be in it too. They influenced sooo many bands.
I agree, they should be in the RnR Hall of Shame. They were the best of the best live. Lived in LA and got to see all the bands in the 60s-70s.

Yes he has. Check amazon.
An authorized biography of Farner, entitled From Grand Funk to Grace, was published in 2001.

It would be great. Grand Funk Railroad got forgotten in history because they refused to go disco.
A GFR reunion tour would be awesome; I would be there. Saw them in concert in 1973 at the University of Cincinnati Nippert Stadium.
Oh please reunite and tour... and if so would itbee too much to ask for a new album?...
You're right, too much. I just had to throw that out there.
Oh man a tour would be so cool!
I'm a YEAH vote on this awsome possibility!!!!
As much as I adore GFR the others don't deserve to share the stage with Mark after how they robbed and screwed him. Mark is being extremely gracious. People would go nuts if it happened but would not respect the other members. It would be bitter sweet for the true fans of GFR that have and value integrity.
For those of us who were fans but we're to young to go to a grand funk concert I would love to see the original line up
No Farner….No Funk. Now or never . Time is not on our side.
First rock concert I ever went to was GFR.
Fans have have wanted a reunionfor over the last 40 years! But if they did ever have a reunion I don't know if it would survive the big fist fight back in the rehearsal hall while rehearsing for the show!
What exactly is the others beef anyway? I believe their fans deserve an honest explanation at the very least.
Great series John 👍🏼😎
DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
We're an American Band was the first album I ever bought. It was even gold vinyl. I would really love a full GFR reunion.
Just adore Mark 👏🙌❤️
I’ll go see Mark and his American Band, and a reunion of the 3, but not what GF is right now because it isn’t GF without Mark. ☮️💜
I hope GFR does reunite for some shows and their respective backup bands join together and play some shows while the reunion is happening.
If Mark is in, I'm there.
Exciting! 🏆
THe fans put you where you are today, Please all consider getting together again.
GFR should never have broke up. The would have had some lean years through Disco, New Wave and Glam Metal but they would have taken their rightful place as one of the greatest of Rock ' n Roll once they weathered the storm.
Whoa! A pacemaker? I never heard this until now! Holly Smokes!!!
Cream managed to get their reunion in b4jack n ginger passed.it was HUGE
Don and Mel wanting to be involved would be awesome!🎸🎸 🥁 Brother Mark and John! They would make a gazillion dollars! But that's the wrong reason. But how do you do it without it?
When I was in basic in Aug 1970 our TI let us stay up and watch Grand Funk on the TV. He was a huge fan.
Saw them in 73 in San Diego. Freddy King opened…great first concert for a 15 year old
If GFR did a reunion tour, they couldn't print tickets fast enough.
Charity concert would be huge…..clean water for Flint❤❤
Saw Grand Funk only once with Ten Years After still remember it vividly.......
Hey mark your a true gentleman Grand funk for ever
