This is the first iconic TV Commerical for the long gone Green Gables Convenience Store Chain in Atlantic Canada (which was bought out and a lot of the stores were rebranded and operating a Needs Convenience Stores to this day)
This TV commerical and jingle is fondly remembered by many of a certain age growing up in the Maritimes. Up until I found the video on a old off air VHS recording just recently, it was a just a memory for many people it seems. Giving the response on my Facebook page, which is over 90k for views (and counting as if this writing) , I am posting the video here for more people to enjoy and at least have some accessible record of this TV spot.
The aspect of this TV spot going viral has brought together some of the people in the commerical share their experiences also.
People who were involved on this project in front and behind the camera have told me:
-It was shot in one 16 hour day. The interior shots in the store were shot after the store closed at midnight.
-It took 21 takes to shoot the opening of the fridge. The man opening the fridge was too tall for the director's liking, so he had to crouch down to be closer to the top of the fridge, and it wasn't comfortable, especially for 21 takes. The man also says " I don't remember how far into the early morning we went to finish up - but we were tuckered. Cool thing was, we could eat anything in the store - free - and then we got paid too. It was a really good day!"
-The little girl in the commerical was 5 years old when it was shot. She is now 47 and reports that "I received $50 which was like $5000 to a 5 year old:)"
-The TV station salesperson is the one at picking up the sandwiches and enjoying them at the end of the spot.
This commerical was largely thought lost and only a memory. I'm proud to have been the one to have the tape come into the right hands and someone who cared enough to understand what this was, as it seems I have found the only known copy to exist. The video was taken from an off air recording from ATV (now CTV) around 1986. I only wish the quality was better, but here it still is.
I can only say i'm extremely delighted of the response everyone has given on my FB page to me finding this TV spot, and hope more discover it again here on you tube to help archive it's history, so it's never "lost" again.
