    The organization representing Alberta's cities, towns and villages says a bill that would grant the province sweeping new powers over local governments is creating an atmosphere of fear.

      So you are saying this sort of thing would be a reason for the provincial government to step in and overthrow the will of local voters? If local voters are angered by this, it's up to them to change their local leaders, not the provincial government. Some competing candidates in the next city election could have as part of their platform tax cuts and salary rollbacks brought in by the current government. There is no need for the provincial government to step into this type of thing at all.

      Albertans asked for this during the last election and the one before that. Conservatives have always valued Canada's constitution which dictates that municipalities aren't recognized as it's own level of govenrment. The province could technically enforce this without even passing it Thanks to the precident already set by confederation.

      It is not. Municipalities are a creation by the Province. Provinces are not a creation of the Federal government and are independant from the Federal Government.

      They are not new powers, where do you think cities get their authority from..... the province.
      Cities and municipalities exist at the whim of the province, they have no intrinsic constitutional powers whatsoever. Bill 20 simply defines what rights the province will exercise over lower forms of govt. other than the blanket rights the province already has.

      though I am not sure I agree with the bill... what freedoms are being removed? The Provincial government already has the ability to dissolve the municipal governments without this bill, this is intended to make it more targeted and transparent. Key word "intended", I am mostly concerned with the unintended consequences.

    So here's a bit of an inside scoop from the provincial government perspective...
    Calgary's mayor is the primary reason why this idea has been proposed in the legislature. Edmonton's mayor isn't off the hook either...
    The province doesn't want to get too involved in municipal issues, it's busy enough. This is just to be used when bribery or sheet stupidity seem to be at play...
    For example is when the federal government had proposed possibly buying edmonton's river valley, and turning those into federal land...terrible idea that our city council didn't outright reject
    This bill would allow the province to step on and prevent that from happening

    "Which government is responsible for municipalities? local governments are legally subordinate to provincial governments, the only sources of authority and revenue available to municipalities are those that are specifically granted by provincial legislation. Municipal governments are responsible for areas such as parks, community water systems, local police, roadways and parking. They receive authority for these areas from the provincial governments."

    Well this is in response to the Feds saying they would go around the province which is an even greater breach of jurisdiction.
    Feds are now saying they'll legalize hard drugs in TO, going around the province. The Feds are out of control.

      The federal government doesn't need to go around the provinces to legalize any drugs - both drugs and criminal law are solely a federal jurisdiction. Also, in terms of democratic values, you can't compare giving money directly to municipalities with unilaterally giving the Premier of Alberta the power to fire city Mayors and Councilors at their will.

    Stick to your existing mandate/job, please, and leave municipal politics to each municipality.
    I say that as a Calgarian who can hardly wait to get rid of our mayor... that was an election mistake that will be corrected by another election.

    In BC this happened in the past history. The province stepped in and cancelled the city of South Vancouver and incorporated it into City of Vancouver. Reason being ongoing city counsellor corruption. Turned out fine.

      Yes and you can add the required interventions in Chestermere and the Summer Village of Crystal Springs. Thank you Danielle Smith, for stepping in when the city of Edmonton was unable to deal with the encampments. Currently the mayor of Wetaskiwin is out of control and should be dealt with also. Calgary and Edmonton are our highest priorities, but there are plenty of examples why this legislation is required.

    After watching the fiasco with the Calgary mayor sidestepping to provincial government and attempting to accept federal funds I agree 100% with this move we voted in a provincial government for a reason, and municipality should not be able to make side deals with the feds. This is a provincial issue and it should remain that way.

    Technically it's more aligned with the constitution of Canada as municipal govenrments are not actually recognized as a level of governance in Canada. They dont even need this bill to enforce it its just a technicality. The municipalities have always been provincial jurisdiction.
