Yes, it's definitely delicious! 'Best' is always difficult to say - but I think I had my favorite pasta dish of the trip in a little Roman trattoria (carbonara). The pesto genovese in Genoa was a close second. But really we ate so much incredible food everywhere! My favorite pizza was in Sicily - don't tell Napoli 🤫
I'm from Bologna but Sicilian of origin. Sicily wins undoubtedly but Bologna has a very child friendly soft in flavours and delicious food that pleases the majority. When I was a child I could not stand ricotta or pepper and very strong aggressive flavours that leaves me breathless as an adult
And for the aperitivo , it always depends on the bar , not on the price . Just find the right one and stick with that one . Another fact , there is "apericena" where normally one drink is 7-12 € and you have unlimited buffet food .
and still has different kind, as Romagna is not so big, piadina is very different from city to city. Come to Fellini's birthplace, Rimini, and try Lella's one@@waysoftheworld_
Here in Milan where I live, many bars offer something called "Happy-hour" aperitives. They charge you more for the drinks, but either they bring you loads of things to "nibble", or, in some bars, you can help yourself into a kind of "buffet" where you can help yourself with loads of little appetizers on an "all-you-can-eat" basis. It really depends on the place you pick for your drinks.
If you want to eat with the aperitivo you need to ask for "un tagliere", it usually cost more in total, but it depends from bar to bar. Some bar dont do it and others are very generouse. Check on google maps pictures of the bar aperitivo before choosing one
Thank you so much for sharing!! Another awesome tip! We still have a lot to learn about all these great Italian customs :) You guys sure know how to enjoy the good things in life 🌟
Sometimes in italy the aperitivo with a bunch of foods and appetizers is called apericena. Aperi-cena where cena is dinner. You can find apericena from mid afternoon, 5 pm to 7/8 pm. We often use it as a actual dinner or as a snack to prepare the stomach to eat more for dinner. It depends on how much you wanna eat.
16:50 - Ciao, a first difference is between "aperitivo" and "apericena", the second is generally done from 6.30 pm onwards and you can have more things to eat even small samples of pizza. Then it depends a lot on the bar and the price.
Aperitivo: you basically drink and eat some salty snacks and then you have your meal at home or in a restaurant Apericena: drinks + all you can eat buffet You went to Fabrik bar for aperitivo and just missed Naera lounge bar above the street that offers apericena . Many bars just offer aperitivo and then you can ordered "un tagliere" to eat salame, mortadella, cheese etc I prefer going to prosciutteria in via Oberdan or tamburini and have whine+ tagliere
Thanks for the comment! 48 hours is probably enough if you just want to focus on the city itself and eat lots of yummy food. But there's a lot of cool stuff in the area like Prosciutto/Parmigiano/Balsamico factory tours in nearby Parma & Modena. There are the Ferrari/Lamborghini museums (if you're interested. We were not 😉). So you can also use it as a base to explore some cool stuff. Long story short, it depends 🙃 You will love Bologna!
depends on the kind of trip you wanna do, bologna is surrounded by hills, having nice nature trekkings there is really nice, going into trattorias (rural restaurants) and enjoy all the small cities aroudn it. I suggest for the first day to go around the city and give a piece of papaer to some old people i there, they will write down all the nicest things u can sample and try. They will be delighted by being able to help out some tourists to enjoy what they love
Yeah the quantity and quality of the free food during an "aperitivo" depends a lot on which bar do you choose, in some places if you want something more special or tastier it's not for free; it's just about discovering which bar has the best offer 🙌 (however just subscribed 😊)
Depends on the time, and the kind of place. If you read "Happy Hour" or "Apericena" (it means aperitivo + cena, cena means dinner) with just one drink you can eat a lot of food, probably from a buffet, better probably after 7,30pm. In Milan you can do it at Navigli and Arco della Pace for sure and probably everywhere in the center of the city. But the traditional aperitivo at the bar, at 6:00-6:30pm is just with olives, chips, little pizzas, focaccia.
Thanks so much for sharing this!! I can't believe, after 11 weeks in Italy, we never did 'apericena' 🙈 Anyways, we hope to be back in Italy many times and keep learning more about everything :) Thanks again for sharing!
I really like these "reports" of yours on the various Italian cities. I think you have realized that the prices of bars and restaurants can vary a lot from the South, to the Center, to the North. Generally the South is cheaper, but prices can vary even in the same city: an "apericena" (i.e. an aperitif with various plates of delicacies) in Milan (where I live) can cost up to 20/30 euros, while a "Negroni" (for me the TOP, try it!) with some olives and various pretzels costs between 7 and 10 euros. Ciao!
Thank you! We were there in mid-October, and cooler weather was just starting to come in. I think January will definitely be quite cold and the days will be short. But this is coming from a Floridian & Venezuelan couple with very little tolerance for the cold 😎
The kibnd of aperitivo changes from city to city...in some place (likely the price is big higher) you get quite lot of food. In the South they tend to be more generous with food.
Thanks! Sometimes we avoided the places where the prices seemed too high. But maybe these were the ones we should have visited to get a 'better' aperitivo 😎
Hi, speaking of aperitif there is only one place where you can find many snacks with an aperitif, in Milan! In fact it is called 'Apericena' which means aperitif and dinner precisely because of the quantity of food they bring you with the aperitif and the prices range from 7 to 15 euros maximum! There are many places that serve it! Check it out 😜😜
Hi. I am brazilian... In Italy, "aperitivo" is just a "pre-meal" drink. There is no associated food. (Some places can offer salty simple things, like olives, nuts or similar.) In Spain, as you probably know, the "tapa" tradition comes from the fact that in the past there were many flies and bugs... that could enter the beer or wine in the glass... so, they used to cover the glass with a "beer coaster"... but then wind could take it away, so they put something on top (bread, cheese, something heavier)... Tapar = "to cover"... Then, in some regions of Spain, it became a tradition... to offer something with the drink... And there are many variations of these items... pintxos, raciones, tapas, bocadillos, etc... (region, language, size, type, etc). Discovered you vlog today. Nice! Enjoyed.
Aperitivo is usually with a little snack and olives. The ones with all the food like tapas usually are at the bar discretion. In Veneto it’s the norm but not elsewhere. Anyway it’s a regional thing, It may also been called aperi-cena

Conflict of Generations + Inflation = Recession on Manners and its originally afferent generosity. The least we forget--and this is a commentary that should include for me to underline that I will turn 70 toward the end of this very year- when I was a kid, Italy practiced its own 'Tapas' culture, where, if you were a regular in 'starred' establishments, your habits being known, during aperitivo time the cart of 'antipasti' was rolled to your table-side, and service would ensue accordingly... When I was an adolescent young man, and you were invited for dinner by family, which included local aristocracy, which today has been replaced with what is called A-listers, several dishes would also appear, yet --depending of spending patterns, the 'host' in your party would have to 'awaken' this generosity pattern by ordering not so much the 'antipasti', but the hors d'oeuvres' dishes--most often a series of pasta samplers, which would have the effect to see a restaurant owner offer the antipasti, making the 'aperitivo' time way more exciting. P.S.: also the presence of very well dressed [or extremely elegant ladies in your party, would further dynamize the enthusiasm of a restaurant management to reach an almost celebratory mood around your party, which in turn would create a sort of 'advertising' force influencing tables around to spend more and --often- gain the same attention you benefitted from... But, remember' times have changed, and ... OK... I leave to your imagination to fill the blanks... Enjoy... Italy, no matter what, remains an idyllic place were surprises can still be very elegant!
L'aperitivo va preso in certe ore ore dinner in locali appositi dove ti danno anche assaggi di minestra e secondi bolognesi. C'è dalle 19 alle 20 .. in tutti i locali preposti . Si chiama: " Happy hours "
Its not that difficult, the guy working at that bar has told you already actually... There isn't a "fixed" way about the Aperitivo and foods which comes with it, it just depends from bar to bar... and for the love of god, its not SALAMI, ITS SALAME! salami is when you got many of them, more than one "salami", only one "salamE" (porcodeddio)

I think it is only in Northern Italy that they use Bechamel sauce instead of ricotta. Let me know if I am wrong.
Oh no idea.. maybe a local can share something? We only saw it with bechamel, but there might be another style somewhere else. The food in Italy varies a lot per region, that's for sure!
the aperitif is used to whet the appetite. So they don't give you much to eat. With the aperitif you prepare for lunch.
yea, that makes sense. it's just we thought it often came with 'fancier' snacks to help whet the appetite. like we got in Verona...
I emailed about the free bolgona guide..but I didn't received one??

@@waysoftheworld_ o yes! I got it! You made it so beautifully! 🤍 Thank you guys!
"many people consider Bologna as the culinary capital of Italy"
could be said the same for Rome or Naples...
Colazione italiana it is probably the most unhealthy breakfast ever. ps. I am Italian :)
Bologna la Grassa it is beautiful
Per gli aperitivi, venite a Torino! Li abbiamo inve tati qui...( Vermouth, Martini, Campari, Carpano) 🍸😋
inventati...
Prrrrrr prrr pr pr pr🤣🤔
"La rossa" is refferred more to Bologna being in recent past the capital of italian communism.
Cool! I thought it was the other way around, that it was primarily the city's red color, and the communism thing was secondary.
@@waysoftheworld_ It was the most important thing about Bologna in the afterwar

Really? I thought that place was quite known for good ragù 🙈 Now we have to go back 🙌 cheers from Mexico!
@@waysoftheworld_ You are welcome...

Se no, dovete tornare, vi mancano taaanti altri locali e specialità!
Panino al ragù?? We didn't know about it - we have to go back. It sounds like something I would love!
@@waysoftheworld_ oh yes, and cotoletta alla bolognese and many many more!
La Rossa is not only called that because of the red houses, but also because of its political orientation. Bologna is the most liberal city next to Florence, i.e. left-wing
Liberale?
what's her name is very pretty

Remember that Bologna is “the red” because it is the most socialist town

Vai in Toscana e riprova.
Saluti.
You're fun
Bel frattempo continua pure a rosicare 😂😂😂
Ignorante, la bolognese è napoletana. Che figura di m..da.
if you want to eat with an aperitif, you have to ask for an "apericena". A phrase composed of aperitif+dinner. Then they will bring you platters of various cured meats, together with the aperitif.of course the price will be a little highert.the "aperice dinner" is usually consumed at seven in the evening.
Thank you so much for sharing! We never tried apericena and it sounds amazing. I guess that's one more reason to go back to Italy and experience it. Thanks again for taking the time to share this ❤️
@@waysoftheworld_ and when you return to America, tell your friends, that those rubbish with Italian names that pass off as Italian foods, are actually industrially produced in America with components such as thickeners, unsaturated fats, which in addition to having no taste, are also bad for your health. health. let's take parmesan, it is colorless, tasteless, filled with thickeners. parmigiano reggiano is a patented brand, and can only be produced in the territories of Emilia, with local cattle. aged 12-24-36 months. unfortunately the Quality costs money, and when you compare the price of Parmesan and Parmigiano-Reggiano DOP (Protected Origin), we have a difference of at least double. And this price difference should immediately raise suspicions. Many American brands use misleading Utalian names. , and many Americans think they are eating foods produced in Italy, when in fact they are produced in America. Every year Italian companies sue companies all over the world because they advertise cured meats, cheeses, wines, etc. for Italian products, but instead they are fakes. and the cases almost always win. upon your return to Italy. I live in Pistoia, a medieval city 30km from Florence. bye bye
1:30 "Spaghetti bolognese" exist, it's just we don't call that sauce "bolognese" but "ragù" ("ragou(t)" not "ragoo"); those are "spaghetti al ragù".
8:00 in the past days, in Bologna it was sign of power and richness for a family to have their own tower, it was a "my dxck is bigger than yours" thing 😂
15:25 giving tons of free food while serving aperitivo it is not a mandatory thing, some places will attract customers with lots of free food, some else won't. But of course you can still ask for anything you want, they just will make you pay for that... Just ask, Italians waiters are friendly and usually very helpful 😊 you can try to make deals like "OK I'm giving you 15€, wanna 2 spritz and sumtin' to eat witit" 😂😂😂 and it comes out a great aperitivo time. Otherwise, it is typical to have only a little cup of chips and another one of peanuts, and that's it.
Hope this helps you guys, going on a trip like this in an "unknown" Italian city quite always turns out in a great experience, I swear. And yes, to have been in Bologna left you more grossi for all the calories you had 😂, more rossi for all the wine you had 🤣🤣, and more dotti 'cause now you know something more 🥰 travelling is about making you richer in your soul.
I really loved to see you enjoy the city next to mine 😘
Si chiama:
" Happy hours "
Its not that difficult, the guy working at that bar has told you already actually... There isn't a "fixed" way about the Aperitivo and foods which comes with it, it just depends from bar to bar...
and for the love of god, its not SALAMI, ITS SALAME! salami is when you got many of them, more than one "salami", only one "salamE" (porcodeddio)
