before you are able to ungroup your lines you will need to Release compound path. Command shift e, or right mouse click. You will see group and ungroup are grayed out until you release the compound path. Once the lines are all separated and you wanted to make sure you don't move some items you can select which ever part of the item by holding shift and then you can group those together now that the compound path is released. To ungroup you can use Command shift G. To group command G. You can also see it in the right mouse click menu and there are some icons on the top that are for ungroup and group.
