Upon opening this video I saw 55 minutes at the bottom and said there's no way I'm staying for a review on a game that I played in middle school, boy was I wrong. I made it through the entire video with a smile on my face because you did such a thorough job of breaking down the game, and keeping me entertained at the same time. You should look back on this one day, and be proud sir. Great job.
One thing I cannot get over is how simply incredible the voice acting is in this game. Seriously! It's sounds totally believable! It's better than most games today let alone back in 1998! True master-piece of a game.
Another Easter Egg is if you don't save for awhile and get to Ocelot before he starts torturing you the first time he says "Snake it's been awhile since you saved your game! and snake says "Yeah so?" and then Ocelot will say that if his body can't take the torture the game will be over and then he basically tries to get you to submit from the get go by saying something like "Why don't you just give up now go on I won't tell!"
I love the soundtrack to this game. Highly underrated when put up against it's more elaborately orchestrated sequels. I like the stripped down, atmospheric vibes the music gave the scenery of this game.
A neat easter egg with Maryl after she shows she has the dogs under control is to punch her then equip a box. One dog will pee on it and equiping that box around them will have the same effect as Sniper Wolf's Handkerchif.
Couple of things you missed. The ninja can also be beaten with claymore mines and will actually call you out on this. Psycho Mantis can be weakened by destroying the two statues in the room. When fighting Vulcan Raven the second time, Nikita missiles can be used to damage him while staying out of his sight. Also, you can keep your rations from freezing by keeping them equipped.
This is my all-time favorite PlayStation game ever. Even though I've played it, I still love watching reviews, or walkthroughs. It's interesting to see other people play this, how they play it, and their comments.
06:30 This cutscene is the reason why I like using the 2nd floor duct. I like the foreshadowing it provides. 08:08 I love the way that's edited. I dunno if that was intentional or not. You say that Snake thinks information is being withheld, and Campbell says, "Absolutely not!" LIES! 29:01 Question, can you still go up that ladder if guards are chasing you?
Awesome game review! Love this game so damn much! This and FFVII are my all time favorite games, which is crazy both on same system and released relatively close to one another!
@AqualungGameReviews yeah i agree, but while the VA work may seem weaker in the remake, it was still top notch and I enjoyed it. While I never really minded the changes, the game couldve done a lot better without the matrix scene BS. Though funny enough, Kojima himself is the one that accepted those changes. The cutscene director had initially remade the scenes to look like the original game, but Kojima was unhappy about it and told him to change them to fit the director's style of over the top
There was another "rule" that the game had about Ocelot's torture chamber: According to Ocelot if you were to use a controller with a turbo feature he would know and the game would end then. I have beaten this game many times(with using the turbo no less) and it turns out that is a lie. Not sure why he said it but I think it was one of Kojima's little tricks to see how far the player would go to try and survive the torture
Well done on the walkthrough as usual. Actually, I've only ever played the Twin Snakes version of this game but I'm impressed by how good the cut-scenes looked already in the PSX version. I personally enjoyed the over-the-top additions and the voice-acting in the new version, but the point is, it's a great game regardless of which version you play.
This may only be in the remake, but I think you can hide under the bed when the guard is gone instead of using the ketchup and he'll still run into the cell.
@maximino27 Final Fantasy 2/4. It's the game that basically made me a gamer and turned RPGs into my favorite genre. That's an experience that's never gotten old, even after finishing it 20+times, lol.
Yep, epic review is epic. This and Final Fantasy VII, and Parasite Eve were the first Playstation games I ever played/owned. Needless to say, I had one helluvan introduction to the effin' giant that was the Playstation. Ahh, the good ol' days. What a magical time. Just a word of advice though, you can get the Body Armor much earlier than stated in this vid, by going back to the first hangar and using a card (i'm not sure where), it helps a great deal for the stair chase sequence. 10 Stars sir.
I like it when you die with guards around, and they say "Huh? What was that noise?" during the ending sequence. Nice job, Ken. This is one of your greatest. : ) ~ Jethro.
Awesome Review/Walkthrough! I never got past the disk change, because right around there I saved and stopped playing for the day and the next day, BOOM, memorycard corrupted and I lost all my data (including my FF VII saves FOR THE SECOND TIME). I was SO pissed of that I didn't play any PS1 games for 3 months and now I just don't want to play it. I'm rambling again, aren't I! Awesome game, equally awesome review!
Bit of advice for the final jeep section - switch to first person view. You have to hold the buttons in kind of a funny way, but it makes shooting everything SUPREMELY easier.
AL, you did a walkthrough/review on MGS1!? I can't believe that it's been here for over a month and I wasn't even aware of it until now. You should do a walkthrough/review on Snatcher in the near-future as well as the fan-translated English version of Policenauts.
First, I like your reviews, and your reviewing style. Adding tidbits of history on the games you review is a nice touch. Second, I am doing a walk through for Illusion of Gaia on the snes, but I can't upload more than fifteen minutes woth of video. How did you get around that?
There are a couple of alternate methods for beating the later bosses that you didn't mention. The 2nd time you face Sniper Wolf, in the snow field, you can also crouch down behind the right-side hill and use Nikita (remote control) missiles. You can also use those Nikitas against Vulcan Raven to fly around behind him, although that's easier said than done.
+Obsidian Changeling (Jonny Dokter) He says "Your memory is completely clean!" but that has to do with the Konami game data Easter Egg if you haven't saved he says "Hmm You have not saved often you are somewhat reckless!"
Metal Gear Solid is, most definitely, one of the best games of all time and, arguably THE best. It's combination of story, action, game play, and all the rest make it a crowning achievement in gaming that set the tone for generations to come and showing the world what a mad genius Kojima is, lol. For me personally, in all my years of gaming, this is one game I'm proud to say I've finished. It always give me a rush, even after all these years. It's not my overall favorite, but I'd say it's #2.
Although not mentioned in this game, it's mentioned in the epilogue in Metal Gear Solid 2's special features, that Naomi escaped, and Jim Houseman took his own life.
this couldnt of been easy to do bcuz of the length of this game and this game being hard(or at least i always thought so), thanks for the dedication to ur fans
Ocelot has the most creepy voice throughout the whole game. Mantis's voice was creepy when he had the mask on but when snake removes it it's not that bad.
Excellent work, you did a great job with the whole thing. I love this game and I have both the original and Twin Snakes. Though I do agree the some of the voice acting isn't as strong and they really should have kept the accents I still really enjoyed the game and play it every so often. As for some cut scenes being over the top it's true but some of the changes I liked. I looked into it and they planned on making the scenes the same but Kojima told them no and the make the game their own.
@dakatubes I had the game legit but I totally didn't know what the heck they meant by CD Case also at the same time when you get that data disc i thought THAT was the CD. That was very obsure and a @ Aqua i automatically knew you'd give the game 5/5. Fantastic video and very well put. If this was the first time I played this game, this would be the video walkthrough I'd use.
32:06 It would be funny if after you defeated Liquid, you contact Miller and Miller looked bruised and battered, and Snake asks, "What happened do you?" and Miller would just say, "Errm... I hurt myself doing yoga..." or something like that. 34:14 You can also use the stinger missiles on Sniper Wolf. 35:50 Snake falls to his death. "ARRRRGHHHH!!!!" Guard: "Huh? What was that noise?" LOL
Great review/walkthrough. Like somebody else commented, I've always used nikita missiles in the second Sniper Wolf battle >X). It always cracked me up seeing her death scene, somehow riddled with bullet wounds though I only shot her with missiles. Also, first time I learned I had to go back for the sniper rifle, I turned the game off for like a month out of anger = p
A+? mmm... a bit generous I feel, Thief 2 is probably the only stealth game that should be awarded A+, but hey it's your opinion. Ah yes congratulations on 10,000 subscribers.
38:20 Other effective (and safer) ways of taking on Raven are Nikita Missiles, and studying his paths and setting up Claymores (which should be plentiful since you have to collect them so damned often)
I freaking love this game. The PS1 version is so good. If anyone is wondering on checking this masterpiece out, i recommend the original to get the best experience, then the remake.
I loved The Twin Snakes but I agree with you when you say it would have been better off without the matrix bullshit. I loved that Snake in twin snakes played a little more like Big Boss in Snake Eater.
22:28 For the wolf part, just go in your box, they will piss on it and you will be safe to move without them attacking you...because they pissed on you.
I hate to admit it but until i saw this I never once beat MGS, now that I watched then beat it I feel a little better...I like how it knew I had a Castlevania save, that was cool.
@maximino27 The Twin Snakes remake on GameCube, as mentioned in the video. I do think it's about time that the remake got re-released on newer systems though.
If you ever get a chance to find an emulator or the actual game, I also recommend playing/possibly reviewing Kojima's other master work: Snatcher. Tho' not as superior to Metal Gear solid it's still among Kojima's most solid work in terms of story, character and atmosphere. Check it out!
Wow! That was impressive! Nicely done! I haven't played this game for years and damn I wish I had it I always thought the Metal Gear games where a mind fuck as you play especially MGS 2 When the Colonel starts telling you "Honestly you have been playing the game for a long time now maybe you should take a break." The first time I heard that I was so scared I actually turned the game off but luckily I saved but like you said earlier that's what Hideo Kajima was going for and it worked.
You should pitch your work to thatguywiththeglasses because it's the greatest collection of reviews on the internet. It's also a haven for people who have been unfairly persecuted by youtube *coughs*TomSawyerReview.
@jacobholdcroft not a problem. Believe it or not I wasn't a fan of the Metal Gear series until this game. Not that the NES game that I played was bad or anything but I just really didn't see the appeal...little did I know that years later when this game appeared on the PS1 that it would quickly become my most addicting game of all time outside of Mega Man 3 have a good one
@jacobholdcroft not that I'm aware of and I've beaten this game A LOT! Granted it was all on easy but I beat the damn thing 15 times(I kept track) and enjoyed this game a lot. I think it only gets altered depending on if you give up in the torture chamber or not
Well considering I said go back to the first hangar, it shouldn't be too hard to figure things out from your own there. You've been spoiled by hand-holding, haven't you?
i wonder if he knew that if you keep you distance you could use the nakita missiles on sniper wolf and vulcan raven and you could use grenades on sniper wolf
You have to beat the game two times in a row either ending for both then when you jump on the elevator at the beginning of the game and when Snake takes off the scuba gear he will put on the Tuxedo.
Download the camera app Google Goggles. You can take a picture of virtually anything and the app will pull up countless pages of information on the object/thing in your photo. Like I always say..."Use Google or Google accessories!"

Not 5 seconds after I say "I'm looking for to the Metal Gear Solid review," you deliver. Massive up Ken! This must have been a tough one.
I love the soundtrack to this game. Highly underrated when put up against it's more elaborately orchestrated sequels. I like the stripped down, atmospheric vibes the music gave the scenery of this game.

This is more of a work of art than an actual game.
Agreed. It's a 10
This series is so amazing that when I play it I actually DON'T want each game to end because every level only gets better and better!! Hideo Rules!!!!
Awesome game review! Love this game so damn much! This and FFVII are my all time favorite games, which is crazy both on same system and released relatively close to one another!
Your reviews are always so awesome, man... I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into these.
I watched the entire review/walkthrough and enjoyed every second of it! GREAT WORK on this true classic!!!
@AqualungGameReviews yeah i agree, but while the VA work may seem weaker in the remake, it was still top notch and I enjoyed it. awesome! The ps1 was my baby when i was 5, i loved it and cherriched it like a baby! i got it addons and controllers and memory cards.
much help thnx for the guide you are a badass
Solid review.
Another great review/walk through.
Defenetly happy I sub'ed you. Lots of work went into this, I know.

Nice review! The villains in the Snake Eaters and MGS4 reminds me of the villains in Ninja Scroll

Awesome review of an awesome game! Hideo himself would have been proud of you! ;)
@PikaTheProsperous
The voices of Mei ling and Naomi Hunter were edited to remove the accents. Yeah.
jesus fucking christ metal gear rex is so much harder to beat than i remember...im getting fucking pissed

It's funny, your preview reminded me I need to get my butt in gear and play this game. So I think this might come in handy.
Great Review/Walkthrough Ken.
How exactly did you manage to get this one out so fast?
This game still rules the roost as the Number 1 PSOne game of all time on most everyone's lists!
MAN I LOVE UR REVIEWS UR GREAT
32:06 It would be funny if after you defeated Liquid, you contact Miller and Miller looked bruised and battered, and Snake asks, "What happened do you?" and Miller would just say, "Errm... I hurt myself doing yoga..." or something like that.
34:14 You can also use the stinger missiles on Sniper Wolf.
35:50 Snake falls to his death. "ARRRRGHHHH!!!!" Guard: "Huh? What was that noise?" LOL
@jacobholdcroft No, only giving up.
if you give up, you get Stealth Camo.
If you don't you'll get the Infinite Ammo Headband.
Thanks :) This is my all time favorite game and its good to know others love it just as much
Aww yeah. Shame you will probably never do Final Fantasy due to the walkthrough part of your videos, but I'd love to see you tackle FF IX.
Great review/walkthrough. Like somebody else commented, I've always used nikita missiles in the second Sniper Wolf battle >X). You deserve a platinum trophy, my good man.
Great review one of ur best!
this game owes its initial inspiration to the kickass 1981 film "Escape from New York". ....the original "Snake".
Regarding Command Tower A (which is my favourite action part of the game), I never bothered in picking up the extra ammo on the bottom of the tower.
I freaking love this game. The PS1 version is so good. If anyone is wondering on checking this masterpiece out, i recommend the original to get the best experience, then the remake.
Inspired me to download this on the psn and relive the magic again
I loved The Twin Snakes but I agree with you when you say it would have been better off without the matrix bullshit. I loved that Snake in twin snakes played a little more like Big Boss in Snake Eater.
After fight with Hind D,you can see parachute at one of trees, that`s how Liquid survived
The battle against Sniper Wolf in the snowy field is easier when you use Nikita missiles instead of PSG1.
@NinjaMetalic Buy it on Ebay or at a used videogame store.
If you ever get a chance to find an emulator or the actual game, I also recommend playing/possibly reviewing Kojima's other master work: Snatcher.

holy shit long vid! nj, that's a lot of work :)
@littlebigphil Fuck uploading, that must've been a pain in the ass to render.
Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the Phone call of Ocelot and Solidus also confirm that Snake was the recessive and Liquid the Dominate?
You should pitch your work to thatguywiththeglasses because it's the greatest collection of reviews on the internet. It's also a haven for people who have been unfairly persecuted by youtube *coughs*TomSawyerReview.
Nice walkthrough!
@PikaTheProsperous
Im sorry, Nastasha's accent was also removed.
@AqualungGameReviews do u plan to do every metal gear?
@jacobholdcroft
not a problem.
Believe it or not I wasn't a fan of the Metal Gear series until this game. Not that the NES game that I played was bad or anything but I just really didn't see the appeal...little did I know that years later when this game appeared on the PS1 that it would quickly become my most addicting game of all time outside of Mega Man 3
have a good one
Think you will do a Silent Hill 1 review on the PS1?
Are you thinking about reviewing Guns of the Patriots or any other Metal Gear Solid games?
@jacobholdcroft
not that I'm aware of and I've beaten this game A LOT!
@AqualungGameReviews did you play it on the original playstation or the playstation 3?
@metalcoola he survived the crash because if you did that youd be sliced to shreds after you jumped i dont think they tell how he survived
that happens on the original ps1 version as well.
if you mess up with the ketchup and the ninja saves you does that alter the ending?
i wonder if he knew that if you keep you distance you could use the nakita missiles on sniper wolf and vulcan raven and you could use grenades on sniper wolf
dope review
@Arc111111 The game has been out for 13 years, it's not a spoiler anymore.
I actually hit Psycho Mantis before switching my controller to port 2!
how do you get the the tuxedo
You have to beat the game two times in a row either ending for both then when you jump on the elevator at the beginning of the game and when Snake takes off the scuba gear he will put on the Tuxedo.
And it has to be two times on the same save file
thnx for the info bro
No problem
This is amazing! Thank you
Always makes me laugh how Johnny always takes a shit with his trousers up XD
I bow to you sir.
Download the camera app Google Goggles. You can take a picture of virtually anything and the app will pull up countless pages of information on the object/thing in your photo. Like I always say..."Use Google or Google accessories!"
Excellent job! Great game
hey in the 1st floor basement where meryl is being held get out of the duct then look down again she will do other excersizes
Wow! An A+ rating! I totally agree!
i wonder are u gonna do all the metal gears?
they should make a metal gear solid movie starring mel gibson as snake
