Super solid album and exactly what Q needed after Crash talk. Some of his weirdest production choices ever are on here and I love it. Hopefully we don’t have to wait 5 years for the next album and get that Q x Alchemist project eventually !

I'll say it again in the re-upload for solidarity. This album was freaking amazing to me. It combines the absurdness and high production I loved from Oxymoron with what Q has learned good and bad from his records afterwards. Songs like Pop and Back n Love have this aggression or sinister feel to them that I really adore. While other tracks like Blueslides and Ohio are pristine jazz rap. I especially love the sentiments of Blueslides sonically and what it represents lyrically. Especially as a little tribute to Mac. Every time I listen to this album I love it more and more. It's so fun yet has some really cool experiments.
Q has confirmed the song has nothing to do with Mac.
@@dabs.47 Hmm that's interesting... especially with the line where he talks about losing a friend to drugs. But if he says so not much I can say.

Lol, yeah. This album felt like it was Q showcasing the chaotic nature of his mindset. Funny Guy is calm, Pop is hype, THank God 4 Me is both, Blue Slides is calm, Yeern 101 is hype, Love Birds is both, etc.
It’s a very “bipolar” album for lack of better words. I loved it because it was better written and more interesting than CrasH Talk. 8.5/10 and my current AOTY!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Also, Foux is so damn Fire!!

Memes aside, Oxymoron still outshines this (albeit art needs to stand the test of time so we will see How I feel in a few years), but I still like this better than Crash Talk. Blank face was so fire as well, I remember the year it dropped and watching the John Muir music video. I miss the later 2010’s I know that’s so weird to say it was so recent. Time flies.
I actually think the jazz influence and introspection on Blue Lips put it above Oxymoron for me personally. Blank Face still on top though
Oxymoron is goated, with blank face in a close #2. Im just not really a fan of jazzy shit in rap. but need to give this more listens. I'll never hate on Q, i'm a lifelong fan even if i don't like everything he puts out
This made me like crash talk better
@@sleep6837 Oxymoron is still a better written album from a songwriting standpoint
Yeah oxymoron is goated. As time has went on its only cemented it's place in history. It's been way more influential I think then anyone could have predicted.

Its like Oxymoron if it wasnt concerned with making hits and instead showing Q at his most versatile, raw and creative in a front to back experience

P.S. #1 is still Aesop Rock’s Labor Days
Feel like you should definitely do a redux review of Blank Face if you've enjoyed this album... both albums share a lot of similarities and we're still upset that CrasH Talk got the same rating as Blank Face 😠
CrasH seems even worse now that Q made this. Goes to show how undershot crash was compared to the rest of his discography
Right. I need him to rereview blank face lp cuz he only rated it low since it came out near the the time to pimp a butterfly was released.
Listened this during the last hour of my grocery shift and I was absolutely jamming to this album
I thought "Foux" was pronounced "Foe" due to it being Q and Ab coming together for the fourth "Druggy's with hxes"
They've taken our diverging timelines away. When will it end?
This was a damn good review, Anthony. Keep it up.
Literally looking for this like where did it go
Feel it was missed that the intro is a foreshadowing and collage of the rest of the tracklist as it’s refrains cycle through the different topics referenced throughout the album
The intro and outro feel like they loop around making the album a cyclical representation of love. The intro starts with "bring the dope, bring the hoes, bring the money bags in" leading to Q acknowledging he's "falling in love" and how this person he's writing about "makes him smile." Leading the rest of the album to feel like the rise and fall of emotion one feels when falling in love. The album title itself working as a duel meaning. Q promoted Blue Lips with the definition that explains it as "speechless due to shock or sudden strong emotions" which plays into the themes of excitement and the development of feeling. While the outro and latter half of the album sees Q embrace the inevitable fall of those emotions. Ending with the outro Smile which is as much a bookend as it is the final stage that brings us back to the beginning of the rollercoaster. Throughout the outro Q embraces the fall with the lyrics "My old bitch get swerved, I fell off o' word, the new car go skrrt" then continuing with "I've fully gone insane, I feeling low in shame" and finally concluding with "we can recollect an old thing, we can suicide ain't takin' no break." The title itself playing into the duality of love. Blue Lips stands for the excitement of such strong emotion and the inevitable death of a relationship. Blue Lips as a medical term is the bluish coloration your lips turn during rigor mortis. Funny the music critic seemed to overlook that. Still one of Q's best. Really just shows how much he's grown not only as a rapper but also as a writer. I think he does a great job of touching on the themes while not beating you over the head with them. Leaving the album an emotional rollercoaster or as anthony pretty aptly described it "a fever dream." I mean what is love if not a fever dream we must all wake from one day. That is unless you die first. BLUE LIPS!
I really enjoy listening to this album. 'First' specifically, but a few others gave me hints of Pink Floyd which I was not expecting. The incorporation of jazz and melody was well executed. I can get lost listening to some of these songs. I also think any moments of reflection and self thought in artists who have had the level of sustainable success that Q has had, are so valuable and relatable. It reminds you that he is a human with feelings, dealing with doubt despite success. It removes a pedestal many stand on, and forget what it is like to step off. It is a fun listen, and caters to many sounds.
I’m glad I experienced the fever dream that was in the original video
What did he say on the original video?
@@Waluigi-vr4qzit was just raw footage of him doing a take saying “featuring devin malik and….” for nearly 20 seconds straight randomly during the last video

Gotta agree, some songs go super hard but some ideas that weren't fully explored. definitely a treat though!
This is the 1st full Q album I've listened to, but I pretty much agree with most of your sentiments on it. I didn't leave Blue Lips thinking "Wow, this was an amazingly crafted masterpiece", but it was definitely an enjoyable, dynamic listen. Solid 7 sounds about right to me.
Gonna have to go back and check out Blank Face one of these days
PERFECT REVIEW! I'm a fan of ScHoolboy Q's music and I couldn't fully figure out what was lacking for me on Blue Lips. I also felt like (although the project is daring and possibly more creative than all of his previous albums) made it hard for me to enjoy most tracks with short run times and too many beat changes. 7 out of 10 is where I rate this one as well. Even on certain days, it feels like a 5 out of 10 or 6 out of 10 due to the many shifts in moods. So thanks for breaking this whole album down. Good album but definitely not his best in my opinion. Blank Face is still his greatest project!!
Fair rating, I would agree. Some VERY good tracks on this thing tho. THank god 4 me, Blue Slides, Foux and Pig Feet are amazing
The adlibs made the last video way better

I just got notified for this now
Man I haven’t heard all of Crash Talk, but the singles were nasty, especially that Floating video, I hope the rest of it wasn’t as dull as this review makes it out to be. Regardless stoked for new Q
Preferred the Lynchian stylings of the last review tbh
This has to be my favorite way people have described that flub from the initial upload.
7/10 is barely the minimum. 9/10 for me
A decent 7 wow! This album was amazing. I didn't expect him to deliver like this after crash talk.
Songs like Blueslides, Foux and THank god for me are just peak Q
Real solid album, school boy q perfectly mixes elements of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rock/punk.
Album is real Good the sounds of it...been banging it on repeat since it dropped
I like the album. It took a few listens to digest and i realized the more i listened to it, the more stuff i found within each song. Its definitely a great album. It also separates itself from all the music thats being put out nowadays
Album so good had to upload twice
A lot of 7 in the albums but there were 10s and 8s in half of the album so I really enjoyed the album overall. Definitely has classic replayability and production is insane. Q is becoming like Tyler where he’s aiming for as a producer than a rapper. 8/10 for me and I’ve been a tde fan since setbacks.
The more I listen the more i love it. I agree with you about the ending being abrupt but keep listening!
I can’t believe you didn’t put Cooties in fav tracks the flow on that song is so odd but it works very well imo

Did my comment get deleted or did it get buried by the other comments? Lol been watching this dude for years, so I sure as hell hope he didn’t delete an extremely reasonable and well articulated comment when other comments are literally roasting him. 😅
The point is recognizing these different points on the spectrum and how deep it is but staying true to how we are as ppl like yea all that may be true but don’t bring it up we all ignore it for a reason
Please review royel otis' debut album and some of teenage dad's. Both from Australia
The biggest travesty is that Blue Waffles comment got hakai’d
good album, i just think the features were a little lackluster in comparison to like oxymoron or blank face. took a few listens, but definitely enjoyed it a lot.
I loved this album. Can you please do 'Fetch the Poison' - Jam Baxter
kinda makes sense why crash talk was considered “undercooked” compared to the rest of this discography. Q spoke that he was depressed and generally fucked up mentally due to Mac’s death. I think the “Crash talk take 1/2/3” that is cut through the album further pushes that. His mind heart and soul weren’t in it so he just kinda put together a mismatch of songs in a directionless compilation and called it an album cuz his life was so fucked up at the time.
The Blueslides / blue side park angle was 🤌
"i can smell schoolboy q's breath in the album cover, i'll give this album a strong 10"
We joke about 'ADHD' as a descriptor for wacky extra shit, but as a first-time Schoolboy listener, this truly feels like the brainchild of someone with it.
It's all over the place and it holds the album back in a lot of ways, but Q will find these in
amped-up pockets to hyperfocus on for like two minutes before moving onto the next one. Do I wish it went deeper/more cohesive? Sure, but it doesn't just seem weird for weirdness' sake and there's really cool shit all throughout.
Yeern 101 is just a monster of a track.
You're pretty much describing the Q experience. I think what frustrates a guy like Fantano about him is that he'll go on 3-4 song runs that feel cohesive and of a piece and then do an about face, drop that shit and move onto a series of stand alone feeling singles before picking up where those songs left off.
Which doesn't really bother me by this point a decade plus of listening to the guy because I think his talent and taste are generally pretty unique.
I love that Anthony decided to join the Crips just to do this review, that’s real dedication to the craft.
now it’s in the description
