Great video, John. I had my last motorcycle accident in 1981, Riding all this time using the precautions you mentioned. I even use the same assumptions when driving my car. Over the years, I've seen drivers get more distracted, impolite, and less skilled. Motorcycling is more dangerous now. Ride safe, buddy. 👍🏾🙏🏾
My phone stays in my pocket in case I come off the motorcycle. I bought the motorcycle to get away from the phone.
Me too. Yes, I still carry a phone, but it's only to use when I'm away from the motorcycle (eg arrive at a destination), so it's not mounted on the handlebar, it's actually stored where I cannot touch it whilst riding. The less distractions the better. When I ride, I don't even have my gear indicator showing ... that's one less unnecessary distraction removed.
One point to remember as well. Watch big rigs with a load. Things can fly off a flatbed which did happen to me years ago. A cardboard flew off and went over my head going 70 on the freeway. I also don't ride next to a big rig due to a blowout will take you out with rubber hitting you in the face or body. I always keep tabs on trucks more than cars due to the fact they may not see you and move over without seeing you. Just a thought.
It happened to me with a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood. I ducked as low as I could. The damn thing still scraped the back of my helmet. I damn near crapped myself.

I agree with 99% of these points. But it’s not always advisable to go faster than the flow of traffic. Most occasions, yes, but not always. Here in Houston, the freeway/highway speeds are set at 65(usually). However, NOBODY does 65. 75-80 is the steady flow. Just is what it is. 80-85 in this bumper to bumper traffic is simply more unsafe than driving a reasonable speed. The people here just jump lanes and never use turn signals. This is exactly why i stay off the loops and freeways in Houston. On roads like you are driving, absolutely agree. That’s not as congested as what we have here.
Come on, Dad, you have more than enough room for a 3rd bike in the garage. IT'S a sin to have a Harley outside without a cover on it. Come on Dad let Cam put his Harley 8n the garage.🫡👍

As a trucker of 45 years and rider for about half that I can tell you that you're spot on about lingering alongside a large truck. When a truck tire blows, it does so with incredible force. I've had many blowouts over the years one of which took out the taillight and mud flap brackets. It ripped the metal like it was paper. Also, as a driver, I appreciate when someone doesn't linger next to me.
PS, those remnants of blown truck tires on the side of the road, we call them "Alligators".

This is a priceless video. I’ve only been riding 3.5 years but everything you talked about, I’m glad to say, I do. Others I ride with who have years more experience, clearly don’t!!! I understand everyone needs to ride their ride, but I want to make sure I have more rides to look forward to….also If I’m at the front of an intersection, I actually try not to be first away, I’m waiting to be sure all other vehicles are stationary and just last week, waiting and checking for that split second saved mine and my wife’s life! Thanks for everything you do, so much respect for you.

It's called situational awareness. So many riders have no clue. I'm 69 been riding since I was 16 and still riding. And yes you wont learn a lot of this in a class. The safety classes are much improved but can only teach so much. You can read a book on how to do anything but until you actually do it and gain experience you wont understand. Good video. Stay safe. Also that's why I keep my phone put away out of reach and ride a Road King . No gauges, no music/ infotainment infotainment etc for distractions.
as a truck driver you are 100% right. never stay next to us. mithbusters did a video on a semi tire blowing up and how bad it really is. plus we cant see much. behind us or right beside the cab is a bad place. also a lot of truck drivers are stupid and dont pay attention. its sad but true. also yes we can fall asleep easy. we work 6 days a week 70 hours. every week. god bless you guys. be safe.

Other than the informational video about STDs shown in Jr. High, this may be the most important video a person can ever view.
Great tips, however one small point you overlooked, oncoming cars doing a left turn on a divided highway, town situations are worse. I have lost a few friends this way, you have NO WAY to avoid them! Whenever I see a car stopped in the meriden signalling to turn left I approach with real caution and try and look at the drivers eyes to hopefully get their attention.
Your tip about staggered riding is also very valid, a few years back my buddy was riding in a straight line formation, the bike in front braked unexpectingly, he could not avoid it, hit it, sailed through the air and when he landed he was implaled on a metal spiked fence, he died at the scene!
lots good common sense reminders for sure! i keep my phone off in my bag and zipped up , i use my dedicated GPS for trips bc i don't wanna see calls, texts or emails on a ride no music either ....

Great indepth instructional video! My son is a new rider so i forwarded it to him to help educate him. Shadetree has a dramatic video on his channel showing exactly how dangerous it can be while sitting at a red light. There is a major crash happens right beside him with a car missing him by inches. Cell phones have made riding so much more dangerous than it used to be. I have lost count of the near misses i have had because of drivers messing with their phones. Thanks for taking time to help educate riders, especially the new riders.

Hi John, this is a serious important video. Your emphasis on all these important safety observations. Yes, this is common sense but there is a serious lack of that in today’s population. Do not ever touch your phone on a bike! I am glad to tell you that I follow every one of your tips. I was MC licensed in 1965. Currently on a 2023 all black SGS…. Thank you for doing this video.
This is very good advice, especially on driving around tractor trailers. When those tires blow out it is extremely loud and violent causing the cap of the tire to fly away from the truck or trailer, potentially causing very serious bodily harm or death. Also the brake pads and other parts sometimes come loose and fly off which can take your head off. Do not ride or drive around semi trucks, not even in your car! Very good advice in this video! I'm a truck driver for 30 years and can't count how many blowouts I've had over the years, it happens fairly often

And also on another note, watching you ride with your son brings fond memories back for me as I rode along side my mom from the age of 18 to late into my 30s (mother/daughter bonding was so awesome) and I miss riding with my mom. She decided to sell her bike a few years ago when she got a little older….

I am a beginner rider and I will say this video is awesome. Most of what you covered is stuff I naturally already do while I’m on my Road Glide, but there were a few things I hadn’t thought of and they weren’t taught in the riders course.

Ass a truck driver myself you couldn’t have explained that better .Also remember we have more blind spots than a car and a motorcycle is a lower profile vehicle which makes it harder to spot. Great explanation John thanks we need more videos like this.

Great informational video for new riders. I’ve been riding motorcycles for 50 years when I started people were more respectful of bikers. But times have changed dramatically and people are so easily distracted by conversation cell phones and information from other devices they may have. I can’t Tell you how many times I’ve talked to individuals about riding next to18 wheelers including and cars. Always always keep your head on a swivel focus on your right. Thank you 4 all the insight I just started watching your chanel as I'm learning more about gear saftey bikes as the only things I dont have is phone mount or carplay device and on my highway riding I ryde slow speeds 60-70 enless on semis im passing them as my 03 sportser is ruff riding @ 60mph the cars shake in my mirrors no rubber mounts

Great video dude. Road strategies can save our lives. Time and distance to react. Speed differential is also important. A little bit of aggressive riding might also come into play. Important one: making sure that car behind you stops before while keeping that bike in gear.
I love your tips but any advice on what to tell the cops when you get pulled over for speeding past semi's , here in Ohio they are very strict on speeding

Wow , dude 10 minutes into your video and you’re amazing, brilliant safety first , I have been riding for years also , my wife for only a few years and I always say make a safety bubble and all the cars want to kill you and as a bicyclist, same tips apply but , you have a lot more words , man you should be endorsed
John great video with a bunch of information for new riders. I am also a new rider and was thinking of your tips as I was out for a ride on Friday. One question I have is, when passing vehicles in a passing lane, where do you position the bike in your lane when on coming traffic of a single lane? My intuition says in the middle of the lane with cars on both side of you. Love to hear your input.

I couldn’t agree more with driving next to any vehicles. I let my guard down one time after a 14hour work day of work painting cars. I was beat tired cruising home and just in auto pilot. I had a car next to me (it was night time) she looked in her mirror to move over but never straight out her window, she aggressively came right into me hitting my handlebars with her mirrors. It upset the bike something fierce, thank God I have been banging bars racing dirtbikes all my life, it took everything I had to settle the bike and keep it from going down. I had to throw my favorite pair of briefs away that night.

I like your videos. But saying people should have a phone holder mount on the handlebar is a little much. Plus saying that if you have it there it is easier to scroll through it. As soon as you start playing with that phone no matter where it is you have become a distracted driver. Put it away. In your saddle bag or somewhere you can't reach it. Been riding for over 25 years, never mounted a phone to my handlebar.
If you travel long distances like many do having your phone out, is a necessity for navigation. I will agree with you if you are a beginner rider and traveling long distances, there would be no reason for it
