    A really informative video, that looks at some of the pros and cons that other reviews don't cover. There are a couple of additional things that could be added on the wood stove. Pros, if you like a real fire, this is a quick and easy halfway house that gives you the flame. Pro, the smoke from the wood burning deters bugs. Con, the smoke from the wood burning (until it gets hot) can be annoying. However the gasifier stoves (like the one you show) burn cleaner that the open box type. Con, if there are forest fire restrictions you should not use a wood burner as burning embers can drift in the breeze unnoticed and could start a fire.
    I would love a wood gasifier stove, but most of the area I live is under fire restriction for half the year.

      Thanks for that Mark. I too rarely bring my wood burning stove as I am often in the backcountry during Summer and early Fall. Not good times to have an open flame. I also don't like the soot. I know the gasifier stoves are better, but they still produce some soot.

    AFAIK the primus omnifuel can burn just about any liquid form of energy including alcohol and cooking oil.
    For me it’s wood stoves and alcohol stoves paired together for most trips, or a multifuel stove for longer trips (world bicycle touring for example) I carry a fire blanket for my wood and alcohol stoves sometimes, and rangers let me keep using my wood stoves even through fire bans, although I am always asked for discretion. I explain how it is actually safer than alcohol, and many times canister stoves (being tipped over flames get smothered). And my alcohol stove is unspillable so that also helps. No one has ever even batted an eye at me using a Kelly kettle either for example since the flame is almost completely enclosed.

    Hey, new subscriber here. Great and useful content -thanks for doing these. I'll look forward to watching more videos. As for stoves; I have an MSR Pocket Rocket, a Brunton Raptor (my favourite day hiking stove) , a Solo Stove, (ok but more of a novelty for me) and an MSR Whisperlite. I like the white gas stoves simply because I can keep refilling the fuel canister and be a bit green. My friend has the next stove I'll buy but I don't recall the name. I like it because when you're finished you turn the fuel canister upside down and it depressurizes the tank so you don't get fuel vapor bursting out when detaching like with the MSR.

      I’m so glad you are finding the videos useful! I would love to know the name of the stove you are planning on getting. Is it the Primus Multi-fuel stove? My friend has that one and loves it.

    canistee fuel (butane). can be refilled and as for recycling, you can recycle them, you just have to have a hole punched into the empty can. and yes, there is a cheap, light tool to do it.

      Thanks for your comment! I know people have refilled canisters, but no company will say it is safe to do so(of course, they have a vested interest in you NOT refilling canisters). I have found that my personal recycler says the canisters are "hazardous waste". I have to puncture the canister and throw it in the metal recycling bin myself. I wish it was easier!

    What about solid fuel stoves?

    • @backcountrycuisine6226
      @backcountrycuisine6226  2 года назад

      Great question! I am not a huge fan of solid fuel cooking. My issues are that I really don't like the smell(not a huge deal), it leaves residue on the bottom of my pots(not a deal breaker), more garbage(each esbit tablet is individually wrapped), and the tablet rarely fully burn, so I have to clean the stove after each use and they are a pain to light, especially in wind. I really like that they can't leak though! I have used them for baking and they work great for that. What do you like most about solid fuel stoves?

      @@TheStryderPrime Thanks. I checked it out and it looks like you can refill the smaller canisters with the larger ones. It costs about $30 for the adapter and the process seems fairly simple. This would solve some of the issues, but you will still have to toss those larger canisters. When I read other sources, everyone says the canisters are designed for single use and it is not recommended by the manufacturers. Of course, they make more money if you don't refill so...I'm not going to take the chance myself, but I appreciate that it is possible. Thanks for sharing!

      Wise words!!! That is why I like alcohol stoves so much. DIY, you can have a stove for a little over a $1 and very ultralight! No so good in winter, but great in the summertime!
