  • Watch how to cheaply build a custom USB cable with aviator (GX16) connector, by using any existing USB 2.0 Type-C cable.
    Parts List
    USB 2.0 Cable (Type-C)
    Paracord Type III (550 lbs)
    PET braided sleeve (4mm diameter)
    Heat-shrink tubes (assorted diameter)
    GX16 (4 pin) connector
    Example build is double braided, you can opt to just use a Paracord or PET braided sleeve by them selves.

    When stripping the conductors I would highly recommend stripping less than is shown in the video. You need very little surface exposed as the soldering surfaces are small and the more of the conductors you expose, the more likely it is that it makes contact with a conductive material and causes a short. Other than that great tutorial video!

      Agree, if I had to redo it I would definitely strip less. Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. :)

    a good recommendation is to use the female side of the aviator terminal on the powered side to ensure if you ever leave the cable unplugged, it will make it much harder for an accidental short. just like how power outlets are designed with the female side giving power.

    Thank you for the informative video, it is very helpful!
    One thing to point out is that your cable is not really up to specification with USB 2.0, as the latter has to be shielded. I would recommend using shielded cable for charging devices and for LED/RGB keyboards. For education purposes you should really add it somewhere in the video or in the description.

    • @antonfilimonov9131
      @antonfilimonov9131 3 года назад +2

      A couple more tips after finishing the video:
      1. Haven't seen any flux in the process, although this is literally the most important component for soldering.
      2. While soldering the GX connector make sure you have no solder spikes as in the video. They damage paracord and PET sleeve from the inside, so the cable is subject to increased wear and tear.

    • @FIZOdigital
      @FIZOdigital  3 года назад +1

      Agree, shielded cables are better, but surprisingly, a lot of off-the-shelf USB cables aren't shielded, just like the cable used on this video. There is also no way to find out if the cable is shielded unless one cuts the cable to check. But nevertheless, I've yet to encounter any problems with unshielded cable on my keyboards. :)
      As for the flux, I'm using 60/40 with Rosin core solder. :)

    Hi! I'm new to this, and the reason why I watched my video, is because in order to extend it, I cut the cable of a Ubiquity G4 Doorbell PoE Adapter that convert PoE to USB-C . There are 5 cables with a plastic insulation (two reds, one white, one green and one blue), all five shielded and there's also non insulated cable around all of this and I don't know what there are for. But I suppose I need to connect them from both ends and then I would need 6 Pins GX16 connector. Is that correct? EDIT: I just learned that this mesh of cable are part of and shield :D So 5 pins only are necessary.

      No performance improvement, it's just purely aesthetic. People usually match the color of the sleeve to the color of their keycaps or somethings pick a color that would complement their mouse/deskpad.
