Hayup Julian you pulled lad! Your fault for saying 'Bonjour' to those two old biddies in the first place mind you. They probably thought you were chatting them up (and maybe you were eh? eh?!)
That V1 rocket site looked fascinating. My Nan lived in Battersea throughout the war and always said how the sound of one of those Doodlebugs would instantly send fear running right through you (and down the backs of your legs probably) as you hoped the engine would keep going until it passed over you. She reckoned they scared people more than any air raid siren or sound of incoming bombers.
    Good ride!

That was, of course, a V1, not V2. I can identify with your Nan's feelings, because I am old enogh to have lived through the Blitz

I need to finish this. And I experienced the damn things - you waited in a sort of fatalistic apprehension when the motor stopped. Something I have never forgotten.

@@vincekerrigan8300 The V1 Doodlebugs really were a 'nastier' weapon (nasty is the best word I can come up right now!) than history gives credit perhaps.
Hearing her stories and of course, those of others, I consider myself really lucky to have been born in 1961, and (so far...) have lived a peaceful life as I haven't served in the armed forces. The country has of course been involved in several conflicts in my lifetime, so individual families will have suffered, but nothing has effected daily life for me. The worst I've had was back in the early 80s when someone got onto the roof of the Ministry of Agriculture offices in Truro and set the air raid siren off that was supposed to warn of nuclear attack. A half hour of wondering what was going on (nothing) and that was it.
To live daily with the threat of conventional bombings and also the V1 and V2s is something I can't really comprehend, but my Nan always said you just had to get on with it and hope you weren't going to be next.
Thanks for posting, it's interesting to read your experiences of these weapons and the fear they induced matched my Nan's perception of them, as like I mentioned above, she feared them more than any conventional attack.

@@micks61 Yes, you just had to get on with it, as she said. I am not renowned for my good memory, but I will never foget the sounds of the Blitz - particularly the gradually increasing engine thrum of waves of bombers, building up steadily as they approached, and on one memorable occasion, the whistle of falling bombs becoming a shrieking crescendo, when our house experienced a near miss. Interesting times indeed.

@@vincekerrigan8300 I think I'd see them as flipping scary times myself! But I've always admired the stoicism and general spirit that seemed to prevail during the last war. Thanks for posting your memories, much appreciated!

French France implies part of it is not French. Part of Spain belongs to Britain. Part of New Jersey belongs to Delaware. Yes, the line crosses the bay and includes part of New Jersey's swampy coastline in that area. A Decatur or Dupont no doubt worked their devilment before modern survey methods were introduced. Would Brittany be the non French speaking part?

Bordeaux used to belong to England. Not a lot of people know that. And Calais, of course.

Julian...do you ever go away with Jane these days? Seems you're always away with your mates....or is that a touchy subject??
