Love Guan Daos, I can remember my father back in the day using one for exercise out in the back yard. He used to do that and Tai Chi, but he unfortunately stopped.
I already expert guan dao while watching other move of guan yu in any movie that i watch! Like "resurrection of the dragon" and "red cliff"and "the lost blades man"

So the guan dao I bought thru someone I know who had it... I've also had a wooden one for (careful) sparring constructed for me when i was going to teach techniques for some kids.... as for the sparring hook swords which you asked about, search polypropylene hook swords and you'll find them on different websites... they're a little too long for what's ideal but still cool.
when you store it, where do you put it too keep it safe? or when you travel with it, how would you carry it? would it be encased in leather? i would like to know
I have not traveled abroad with it. I have a lengthy weapon bag I got with it when I purchased the guan dao. I will use that, unless I'm with a friend and have it in their car or something. For the most part now, I just use it in my garden now that I've moved into a house with a garden, so I don't have to conceal it. I used to keep it in this tiny basement room below my appartment, which we rented (we paid morgage for the appartment but rented this space)... it was a space full of my weapons and Bob dummy (if you're curious i can link you the vlog where I had to move everything out of that space.... now since moving I keep it in a shack in my garden, alongside all my other weapons.
I know this is the case with most European glaives, but I wonder if the spike on the back of the blade is used to catch cavalry riders and pull them off their horses.
I know the guan dao was at times used from horseback, where the lighter version the pudao was a foot soldier weapon known as "the horse chopper", since it was often aimed at the horses. All I know is that spike is used as a weapon, as there are techniques with it in the forms and I've used it in sparring (there's a few guan dao sparring videos on this channel, 2 I think with wooden guan dao and one with a foam covered version).
It'd be super cool to see you do some basic moves with the pudao :) I kinda wanna get a smaller pudao like your's. The large guan dao is cool and I was really eager to get one before I finally did, but a smaller one would be a lot easier to take with me to train and record videos. :)
0:58 I see similarities in martial arts right now, the stance you where in to us would be called Zengstu-Dachi, we even have the same 45 degree turn you demonstrate at 1:02
If you google it there's various places to find ones of different quality. The type used in this video is with flexible steel, those are more common and cheaper, although a heavier one feels more realistic (I'd love to get one like that some day)... I had a friend help me build a wooden one for sparring.

In the movie "Dragon the Bruce Lee story" the demon samurai warrior uses a kwondao, but fights Bruce hand to hand until the end he is choked to death by Bruces nunchuck!

Awesome, maybe we can do a wooden guan dao vs wooden guan dao sparring video. The one you had here was pretty light, cuz I don't have protective gear and it's designed for sparring, so it was made light to make it less dangerous to spar with... I did spar with a heavy wooden one in Italy, but that was with full protective gear. :)

Haha nope! A testing video would be cool, you can collab perhaps with the channel Lil Mao. :) Be careful with it though, depending on your weapon permit. Actually, this weekend, I went out trying to record something with it, and it was difficult finding a quite spot without people and where I could place the camera without it pointing towards the sun, and I ended up getting stopped by 2 police officers. They saw me do some moves with it and approached me thinking I was a psycho and that the thing was sharped, luckily I had my weapon's permit on me and kept calm... so I was told to go home and next time find a more isolated spot to train in (I trained in nature, somewhat isolated, but close to traffic from the road, so there were people at a distance.
Well fighting can at times be a bit like a dance (with fire, so to speak)... here's a sparring video, I do some of the same flashy techniques to put on a show and pressure test them, mixed with more straight forward practical ones... for the battlefield I would have stuck to the latter, but this was more of a duel in the sense of a test of skills and putting on a fun spectacle for the RUclips audience. Can you slice bread with one of those? 😂😁 Did ninjas ever use these flubby swords, or were the real ones harder? When seeing monks showing off their weapon skills, I always thought these weapons were props just for demonstrations.
The battlefield versions were less floppy and heavier as well and sharp. :) Before I got this I practised with a heavy shovel (shorter, but similar moves and extra weight), this is more of a wushu performance type of version of the weapon. :) Slice bread hmm... I might :p
You have heavier battlefield weopons but There are a lot of flexible ones like this. Reason is to give up thrusting power for speed. The sword must be so light that you can create a force field as they say it. Where you can’t be hit because of lightning speed.

I've got one connection who gets deliveries thru France, so next time will be thru him, but right now I don't have space for all the weapons I have, and I'm also focused on Krav Maga and not just Kung Fu weapons, so we'll see. @suraj 23 -You need research before you claimed for credits. There are many Kung Fu forms of fighting exists long before your Bodhi Dharma arrived at China. Read the novels "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", "Water Margin" and etc. Bodhidharma came for the sole purpose of preaching Buddhism, in China called "Chan" and "Zen" in Japan. The Indians never seriously take cognizance of this wise man presence and his blessings. To help maintain concentration in meditation he impart some form of yoga exercises based on Kalaripayattu - a south Indian form of martial arts. The monks at the Shaolin temple take these exercises and improvised them further into a lethal form of martial arts known as the Shaolin Kung Fu.

Ok so the thumbnail, on the left is that picture from that estys guan yu guandao and why is the blade floppy.
It's a cheap wushy style one, that's why it's floppy. The picture on the left in the thumbnail was just one I found on Google pictures.

This is a wushu type of version of the guan dao (the metal one, the other was build in wood) which is why the blade is a bit wobbly. :)

Not anytime soon, those are super expensive. The one I have was alerady expensive. Maybe sometime... but at the moment it's not in my plans :)
