How to Shoot Slow Motion in S&Q Mode || Sony a7 IV, a7S III

  • What's the quickest way to shoot slow motion footage in your Sony mirrorless camera? While the regular Movie recording mode in most of Sony's cameras will allow shooting in high frame rates in various resolutions, this still requires editing your footage in post to slow it down and achieve a slow motion look/effect.
    Fortunately, Sony's Slow & Quick (also known as S&Q) mode allows you to capture slow motion footage with just a few settings changes in your camera, and without any additional work to be done in post. In this tutorial, I'll walk through the process of setting up S&Q mode to shoot slow motion with my Sony a7 IV, though this same process can also be used with other newer Sony cameras like the a7S III, FX3, a1 and the a7R V.
    Furthermore, though the available resolutions and frame rates may change, and the menu names and locations might slightly vary, this will also work with Sony's cameras with S&Q mode that utilize Sony's older menu system, such the a7 III, a7C, a7R III and a7R IV, and Sony's APS-C bodies like the a6100, a6400, a6600 and more.
    If you have anything else you'd like to see covered on Sony cameras like my a7 IV, let me know in the comments below!

    Whats the issue? I've got a v90 card on my slot 1 and v30 card on slot 2. When i swap to s&q it says to upload to a higher sd that v60, even tho I've got the v90 into slot1.

      Is this on the a7 IV? 4K 60p is always in an APS-C crop (1.5x) on that camera, and has the highest requirements for memory cards. V90 card should work fine with all of the different options, might just need to make sure you're not doing redundant recording or proxies to the 2nd V30/V60 card.

    Hello Andrew, I still didn't understand what means "P" in the Rec Frame Rate setting. If I shoot a timelapse with the interval function and produce a clip with 30FPS Framerate then I need 30photos to have 1second in the clip. But what does it mean in the S&Q Mode. Do I have now 1FPS or 24/30/60 FPS. I don't get it at all! Does the 180 rule apply to the Rec Frame Setting or the S&Q FPS Setting. For example if I have 30P in Rec Frame setting selected (even though I don't know what it means) and 1FPS in the S&Q Frame Rate selected, do I need to choose then 0.5sec exposure or 60sec exposure?

    • @andrewsaraceni
      @andrewsaraceni  Год назад

      Rec Frame Rate is what you want the frame rate of the final clip to be in. e.g. If the timeline of your editor will be 24fps, you'd chose 24fps. S&Q Frame Rate is how many frames are captured a second within the Rec Frame Rate. So you'd choose 1fps for a time lapse, or 60fps for slow motion, etc. What you set as the exposure - so shutter speed, like you mentioned - is entirely up to you, and how much motion blur you need. So in your example (30p, 1fps), I'd start with 1/60 as the shutter, and see if you need more motion blur for what you're shooting, and if so, stop down and adjust. If you're doing slow motion though (i.e. not a time lapse), 180 rule will almost always apply.

    • @fouuladvand48
      @fouuladvand48 Год назад

      @@andrewsaraceni Hey Andrew, thanks for your fast reply. Now I understood what Rec Frame Rate means, actually it has nothing at all to do with my recording frame rate. It is the playpack or editing framerate I want my final video to be in.
      But what I still don't understand is the choice of shutter speed for a timelapse (quickmotion). Usually I never care about the framerate of the final clip because I adjust my shutter speed by doubling it according to the frame rate of the actual sequenze that I'm recording in this moment. Let's say my final clip has 30FPS but the sequenze I do record has 120FPS I willl use a shutter speed of 1/250s . And so why I cannot just choose while recording a timelapse which final clip will have 30FPS but the sequenze that I'm recording is 1FPS, not just a shutter speed of 0.5s. 0.5s is the double of 1s. Like 1/50 is the double of 24FPS and 1/60 the double of 30FPS.

    • @andrewsaraceni
      @andrewsaraceni  Год назад

      @@fouuladvand48 You can choose your shutter speed to be low (up to 1 second), but it's separate of the S&Q settings. Again, it's all about the motion blur you want. Lower shutter speeds (i.e. below the 180 rule) actually look best for time lapses, but they require stopping down your aperture, using an ND filter, etc. to compensate. Try different shutter speeds and see what works best to your eyes/situation. I may do a follow up video at some point on some of these situations folks use S&Q mode in.

      There is supposedly a slight quality difference between regular Movie mode vs. S&Q (even using the same resolution, frame rate, codec, etc.), but in my testing/use I would say it's not really noticeable, or anything to worry about.

      It depends on the camera; ISO minimum would depend on the PP/gamma you're using, not S&Q mode specifically. You should be able to change ISO like in any other camera mode (e.g. photo, video).

      Nessun problema. Riprendi in 4K a 60p (o 50p in PAL), usa la regola dell'otturatore a 180 gradi e S&Q se vuoi che venga rallentato direttamente nella fotocamera, e questo dovrebbe essere un buon inizio.

    I just dont see the appeal of s&q. It’s just better to shoot natively and slow down in post. You have more control like that. I find it’s just useful for beginners who are new to editing but then again, a7iv is not really aimed at this audience, it’s prosumer. What wouldve been nice was to use that mode only to record high fps, 120 or 60 without slowing down in camera. Effectively it becomes another custom mode (like the 1,2,3 on the dial).

    • @andrewsaraceni
      @andrewsaraceni  2 месяца назад +1

      It's a preference thing - I also prefer shooting natively and slowing down in post (and having the ability to use audio), but there have been a few occasions where having it slowed in camera (delivering footage to someone) is convenient.

      This is a V90 Sony Tough Card (G series)? On what camera model? I would double check your firmware is up-to-date on the camera, and possibly contact Sony. I think they did have an issue with some of their earlier V90 cards in supporting the full range of video specs in their cameras.
