I can't help playing this video at least once a day. It is SO POWERFULL, the way Frank Black Francis is screaming is tantalising. I knew the audio version for years and already found it terrifying, but watching it is... something else. This performance is the ultimate Rock'n roll moment as far as i am concerned. And yes, the PIXIES are the greatest modern AND contemporary rock'n roll band. What was happening there was raw, beautiful and true.
Cobain said he was apprehensive about releasing "Nevermind" because he was afraid people would realize he had lifted the Pixies' loud/quiet/loud dynamics. He also said that "Gouge Away" was basically the template for almost all of the songs. Apparently, when "Doolittle" came out, he quit his job & rode around all day on public transit listening to it on headphones and had some sort of epiphany. I dunno- whatever it takes.
"If you know the words you can sing along", yeah right ! There's nobody who can sing along with this version. I've seen this clip, I don't know how many times...and every time I go like :"That's awesome, unbelievable, indestructible" Lost for words !
one of the reasons that explains my love to the pixies is that they do exactly what they want to do with their music... to how many bands could i say the same? not too many i guess....
@SirCinnamonBoots I just checked out Rites Of Spring. They certainly don't sound like what most people call "Emo" These days, I can't say whether I like them or not right now though because I like to give bands time to grow on me. Thanks a lot.
@Gloriamagnificens people will remember the indie artists fondly in 10-20 years, just like they do with the pixies, rather than remembering the popular music in the 80s. You realise thats how this works right?
One thing that always amazes me: Though the screams were loud, perfect, and scary, he somehow never got a nodule in his throat, so congrats, Mr. Francis!
I love watching the Pixies when they were younger...they had a fierceness to their music that was truly awesome. Oh yeah...and Kim Deal NEVER looked hotter than she did at this concert...
Holy HELL! Why are they putting out DVDs of the last tours when THIS is not readily available!? This BRixton 91 show looks legendary and I've only seen this and Into the White. PUT IT OUT!!!
@WesSideCali Sorry, no. Thompson explained the song meaning in an interview long ago. According to him, he was making fun of girls who try too hard to be sexy and fail at it. BTW, Thompson had a live-in girlfriend when he wrote this. According to the people who were around the band at this time, it was Kim who appeared to have the hots for Chuck, not the other way around.
@bentrend lmao that's hilarious and that shit is so true. When I first saw them this is when they started to tour back in 04 when they came out of retirement he started to do this song and I had to cover my ears for a moment. Because that dude can still fucking wail lol
i've never seen a singer have so much presence on stage with such minimal movements
1:00 is probably one of the most thrilling moments ever caught on tape between an artist an it's audience. Look at that young fellow go!!
When he starts holding the mic down and doing his really guttural vocal at the end, some of the crowd stop moving, presumably in sheer amazement!
That scream or yell or whatever is the most impressive singing I have ever heard.
holy shit this is so good
unbelievable. what a performance. i've watched this a thousand times and it kicks my ass every time.
such stage presence look at those groovey moves haha
i can listen to this over and over. just now, i've done it like 8 times in a row!

The Bass is sooo groovey in this song I love you KIM DEAL!!!
saw them live three times this tour.... my soul is at ease from screaming tame.
Good lord! They captured the feeling of psychotic rage, I'd say.
This song is so primal it makes me emotional.

There is no better yell in rock history than this specific "TAAAAAAAME!"
"If you know the words you can sing along", yeah right ! There's nobody who can sing along with this version. I've seen this clip, I don't know how many times...and every time I go like :"That's awesome, unbelievable, indestructible" Lost for words !
