well you have another one coming home now called Alex so pay him some what respect because i will Not every ENGLISH PERSON DENIGHS SCOTLAND OF THIER FREEDOM I DONT
Never heard this rendition before. Simply breathtaking! It brings a tear to my eye! Even after 45 years, Sir Alex never fails to both surprise and delight me!Alex, you are truly missed but the magic and mirth and mayhem shall live on for generations.
I saw him do this live mid 70's at Leicester DeMontfort Hall & WOW, the audience was just mesmorised throughout & I swear to this day I've never seen such pure blissful theatrical talent, as that man had. that even comes at all close, Man he was a Pure GOD on stage & I still adore his every song as I know that many many do too the world over!! God Bless Ya Alex, we all miss you mate but you're still more than ALIVE in all our hearts mate so RIP Indeed Sir!! ;-)
Up there! Melody, gravitas, power, tone, guitar licks, the hymnic quality, the soulful scream, the tightness of the band, the dynamics silence vs. sound. Up there.
This brings tears to my eyes. I spent every penny I had on buying the albums and going to see Alex and the band in concert. I worshipped him like a god. Zal is still touring in the UK (without the makeup) and I don't live in the UK any more but I get regular updates from a girlfriend who knows him well.
"a fender telecaster is a much more dangerous weapon than an AK47, its got better penetration, it's a killer. and it's got better communication. you see, the trouble with an AK47, is there all dead. but if you've got s fender telecaster, and you play Peggy Sue like Buddy Holly did, how many people you going to get with that? and they're going to live, and it's going to live forever. i guess thats what i like about rock and roll..." - Alex Harvey 1975
I'm speechless every time I watch this video. According to Google, this is the video I have watched the most, ever. I have no idea how this film got made, meaning Wha? Wha? And then bagpipes? The lyric helps me understand why they wrote this song, but the rest is beyond my understanding. Zal's guitar break is what I heard first on a radio a long time ago, and it's what keeps me coming back to hear it again. McMillan, tnx for letting me hear and see this for over decade. Well done.
Love this! I saw them play it live in Bern, Switzerland in 1974, when I was aged 20. They were supporting Deep Purple and were superb. To add to the experience, my friends and I dropped what turned out to be my final LSD trip. One thing that sticks in my mind that night was the local motorcycle gang, Broncos, who seemed to be everywhere and carried white whips. Can't recall any trouble occurring though. A great night at a great time of my life. Thanks for posting.
A couple of mates at school went to the concert in Slough and made a bootleg tape. They played it at school and we all became fans and went to see SAHB at every opportunity.
Saw Alex twice in UK. Totally originally and brilliant. Zal C an amazing guitarist and Anthem was their Anthem. Check out the Soldier on the Wall. That was the real Alex. The juice ended him and took him away in the end. An amazing talent lost but not forgotten. .
Magnificent work on the coda. That part was always going to be tough to get right playing live but that lady carries it off magnificently. Great touch having the pipers onboard too.
SAHB never really caught on here in the US. I guess he was just to out there to fit in with Styx, Boston and the like. This clip is just amazing. Thanks for digging it up and posting it.
They only ever toured once maybe twice in the US. I saw then on a late night US show called "In Concert" early 70s and I was hooked forever. I am told they also opened for jethro Tull on a tour that I missed, but once I had heard them i began turning as many people on to their music as I could through radio and just word of mouth and I am in Canada and used to play this on my radio show in the late 70s as much as possible, and learned of Alex passing from the editor - Greg Quill - of a big music magazine I had just begun writing for called Music Express, in Feb. 82
I think SAHB is to Glasgow what Lynyrd Skynyrd is to Jacksonville, FL, USA. Beaming with Pride for our boys! I just discovered SAHB and I'm totally captivated!! Par Excellence!!!
Alex's vocals superb - better than the studio version. I'm not remotely Scottish, but by God I FEEL Scottish when I hear this. Incredible. (Or maybe I should say Sensational).
Such an iconic and paradoxical band. Without the gimmicks, how would they get noticed? But when surrounded by the likes of Led Zep and Pink Floyd, how can people see past the schtick? Still amazing work - all Zal IMO.
Sounds a bit too much like Mulligan's Tyres to me. Give me Next, Faith Healer and Midnight Moses. They define Alex Harvey and his bands unique contribution far better.
Probably the best ever band to come out of Scotland.
Stone the Crows eh! Big Country. Trio, Lyall/ Gallagher/Gallagher/Lyall.
@@goneby100 And your point is ?
AC/DC
@@wullieg7269 Not all of them were Scottish.

lord Alex
Alex will have been gone 40 years this coming February and he still has the magic in songs like this.
Zal Clemonson is one of the most under-rated guitar players of all time!
Love Zal Cleminson.
What a performance! I got into the SAHB after seeing them on In Concert in the mid '70's. What a shame Alex passed away so young.
Unquestionably, the most prolific, most unbelievable piece of art Alex ever imparted to us. A prophet.
I so agree. This is my favourite SAHB song.
Every song that got the Alex treatment was ... in modern terms.. a Banger! Better than!
This should be our next Scottish National Anthem!!

rock on alex . . zal what a great guitar player. .

Way up!
Throw in some pipes and a great female soloist and you truly have an Anthem

I remember seeing this live in Philadelphia back in the 70s.
To this day it is one of the most memorable and moving performances I have ever seen.

Alex Harvey - 1980.
...and Vicky Silva: what a beautiful and touching voice!
I so agree.
Could this be the best song of all time? Aye..well maybe!
Young gun here, I was born in 2000 and I love SAHB
Thank you for posting this piece of sublime, bollock rocking, utter, shear, awesome, brilliance.
Still sensational after all these years.... Make your skin pores lifted
A message song that has no sides left or right.Take it for what it is ....
Who else would bring a female vocalist and 2 pipers onstage in the 70's . . .??? Nobody but Alex Harvey and the SAHB, that who!
This is by far the best SAHB song ever i have had this song put into my Will to be played at my Funeral. Tomahawk kid for life

He was very popular hear in Cleveland, I only got to see him once, but once was all I needed
The Dead End Kids were a New Jersey bar band and magical incarnation of this spirit on some nights.
One of the best songs to come from the British Isles (Scotland) hands down .... just listen to those pipes!
i saw the band live in the 70's at newcastle city hall amazing performance
I mean honestly, this is a brilliant song and Zal is a master of his craft.
Absolutely beautiful.
Very nice
Love the lyricist and the pipes too . . . Defo the cat's pyjamas, bee's knees, dog's bollox, nuff said.
I love this song...I think is wonderful...I'm listening to the various versions here on you tube but I can't decide what's the best one...
😢 So very much missed.
Wish I had the pleasure of seeing him live ,seen the band 5 years ago and still amazing although nobody could replace Alex.Zal awesome as ever.
+John Milloy I saw him with the WHO at Parkhead
The only time I saw them live was at that gig... amazing!

That was spine tingling.
Goosebumps.

Who even thinks to write a solo like that? Oh aye, Zal !!!
Brings back memories of sitting in a good friend's basement spinning some of the very best music created. while shotgun tubbing.

Original, not like Zeppelin who nicked music for nearly every track.
