There didn't seem to be anything definitive coming out of the chair segment. Different features about different chairs were talked about and that was about it. No real information was gained. The conversation started with the price range of 300 to $400 and before you know it were talking about $1000 chair. No pros or cons list or common misconceptions given.
I bought a KAB office chair over a year ago after many budget £100-140 chairs, replacing them after a year or so of 8hr daily gaming sessions. The KAB was around £480 and has all the adjustment you could ask for including lumber pump, seat base extendable and all the other common adjustments. The beauty of the KAB chair is everything is serviceable and the whole chair apart from the base is assembled in very high grade materials. It hasn't worn one bit! And is still amazing. Simply the best office chair I've ever owned.
Thanks for the review. I am really glad you brought in Melissa Afterman because, to be honest, I doubt most reviews because they didn't have someone who was creditable doing the review for ergonomics. This stopped me from underspending on my chair. I really like the idea of the moving seat pan. Thank you!
ok...i cant disagree with this more. For one you can get very good chairs for around the 100 buck mark. You dont need to spend no 3-4 hundred or more to get a decent chair. Secondly the woman says at the beginning that chairs are heading into the more plastic and stiff backings and how our bodies need more cushion etc, but yet every chair she said was good was a big piece of plastic with no cushion at all. I cannot stand this whole trend of plastic board chairs, give me a nice comfy, plush leather chair any day of the week.
You can get more-less adjustable chairs at the 100 buck mark, sure. Just don't expect them to last very long. The critical point for adjustable task chairs is around 300 bucks, anything below that and there's been some compromise in materials - usually that means substandard padding that loses shape really quickly, complemented by cheaper plastic compounds. i'd say the gain in quality and ergonomics is pretty linear from about 300 to about 1000 dollars - the more you invest the more you get. Past the 1000 bucks mark it's really all about brand name, fabrics/leather and designer quirks that you pay for. The high end chairs tend to last for 10 years in good shape so i'd say the cost of sitting comfortably is better than on cheap Walmart chairs. As to the thin padding and plastic back - at least the Gesture (ain't sat on the others) does not need more backrest padding - the backrest itself is flexible enough - it's fixed at two pivot points and the rest adapts the curvature of your body. The world goes on and even chairs are becoming more and more clever, time to catch up.
+Shadownian a plush leather chair isn't going to support your back for as long as these higher end ones. When she said cushion she meant a chairs ability to minimize pressure and maximize support on your back. Honestly you just sound but hurt because of the pricing lol.
You just reminded me that I literally started with one of these milk crates when I had my first computer (which was very weak), now I'm sitting on my Pulselabz Guardian and my Gaming setup is great.
I think Melissa made great points, it's incredibly important and she clearly knows all about it. But 'Guide to gaming chairs' should have more information about DxRacer / Seat and such chairs as those are the ones that are most mentioned in the gaming space.
I found an old lay z boy in a dumpster, after 3 hours of steam cleaning i found it's the best chair ever. Supports lumber, neck, head. Lifts my feet. super cushiony. I have to use my KB in my lap and my mouse on a sliding table just over the right armrest, but this somehow didn't affect my game play whatsoever. If you want to go on 16 hours gaming binges with a break only every 4-6 hours, lay z boy is for you+^_^+ I don't know if i can go back to office chairs and their need to use neck muscles to hold up your head... On a side note, a good bucket seat from a high end car in a junkyard can sometimes be near free and is really comfy. Though you have to DIY casters for it. Who would have thought luxury car seats intended for hours of driving could be really comfy in the living room?
The Dx racer is a perfect example of stylish but uncomfortable I had back problems using mine. Switched to a regular office chair and am doing much better off
Thanks guys for this video, it will be very helpful whenever i manage to get 1000 dollars to blow on chairs. >.> Seriously, you'd think they'd throw in some budget options as well.
Padded arms are very important for me. For many many years before getting my current chair i was putting cushions or old clothes on the plastic armrests because if i didnt my elbows would end up red raw. Gotta have those padded armrests
Can't vouch for Herman Miller chairs enough, Aeron is about £600-£800 RRP. Picked mine up from eBay for £175 best chair I've ever had for any occasion. Genuinely upsets me to see people giving these 3rd rate "gaming" chairs any attention.
I have the bucket seat an its awesome, I had a big leather office chair that cost a lot but the bucket chair is more comfortable for long gaming sessions.
i think my good old wooden kitchen chair is better. you completely dont feel your lower half of your body after ~2 hours of gaming so you can focus on the game fully. but to be honest if would paying more than $100 for a chair i would want a rally car type seat belt too. it is important otherwise you just slide down to chair
***** Right we are ultimately talking about purchasing a comfy chair over something like a cheap laptop, somethign just aint right there lol. I refuse to believe fancy fabrics and ect, somehow are more expensive than computer parts.
I upgraded from 150€ normal office chair to AK Racing Nitro (290€) lately, and I can say it is worth it. The chair is much more comfier, looks better and doesn't give me back pains, even if I sit +10 hours on it.
I was hoping to see different comparisons to a variety of different gaming chairs. This video was disappointing. Too much of this time is spent talking about obvious points.
I think the whole "I'd rather see them go for something completely new instead of another " is very much a gaming journalist thing that doesn't really represent what the average gamer wants. If I had to play every big release for my job then yeah, I'd probably get sick of sequels too. But the average gamer? I think most of us would take another entry to our favourite franchise over a new ip any day of the week.
Fantastic tips, the most amazing and professional Gaming Chair guide I've found so far. Not a Single BR RUclips Channel have something near this. Thanks a lot..... thumbs up and shared.....
Sampling Reality Because the Ikea Markus is still considered to be a cheapo chair in the ergonomic chair realm. I've sat in one before. Sure, it's amazing for the price, but nothing compared to the $800+ chairs.
Ok I purchased a chair that is EXTREMELY comfortable for my PC gaming, and guess what... It's unbranded and bought on Ebay (new and I put it up myself) for around 40 pounds (70-80 us dollar). Also Fallout NV had good survival elements on Hardcore Mode which made the game harder where you'd need to control hunger, thirst, radiation, damage, and inventory (as in this mode everything adds weight including bullets) so maybe a MMO (like H1Z1 and DayZ) for the franchise is not to far fetched, but I really hope it'll never see the light of day considering the disaster that is ESO.
Hey everyone, I could really use some assistance finding a chair that's right. I'm purchasing one as a gift for my physically disabled brother. He's short - 5'3" or 160cm - but he's also heavy (due to his disability, mostly) - 120lbs or 146kg. Most of the chairs that can support his weight seem to be made for taller people. Which can be a problem. The chair needs to be comfortable for him. He spends a lot of time on his PC and loves the idea of owning a gaming chair. So I've been trying to find someone to suit his needs (which seems nigh on impossible). Any suggestions or advise that could be provided would be of major assistance as I am at my whit's end.
PC Gamer I was thinking...Since you got LPC to play on every single game you can imagine, how about sending me your old PC? I'll send you a book on Ecological Management that I've finished exam from just recently, a potato (real one), and a cookie. What do you say? Can't pass on a deal like that
ended up with everything correct just by doing whats comfy, which will answer most questions in life. just need a new chair cause well, this one is literally falling apart as i type.
as important as having a good chair is, the thing is I don't think every body has $300 to spend in a chair. it would have been nice if they included some good budget options rather then telling people to just go drop 3 to 4 hundred dollars on a chair.
+Vongola X I figure this is a video targeted to the sort of people who spend $200 on a keyboard, at which point getting a chair is likely going to be a better use of that money.
Mustard Tiger do you rest your elbows or forearms on the arm rests? do you have a keyboard wrist rest? are you typing with your wrists on the desk? is your desk up too high, or too low?
@ 14:18 in the Q&A, dude says multiplatform work is only 10% more work for the developer and they make a ton more money! where on earth did he get that "10% more work" figure?? i'd bet alot of developers would completely disagree with that!
i remember when you could find really simple but good for your back chairs for less than 20 bucks, now you cant find something good for less than 500 or your back will come back to haunt you
have to love the tutorial part on how to sit in desktop chair. i hurt my back if i sit the way they want to for more than one hour. the idea on having any kind of tutorial on how to be comfortable is stupid. figure out yourself how to sit, you are the only one who know what is comfortable for you. if you take away that part, that its a okay video
$50 Walmart chairs suit 99% of the population just fine and have done so successfully for years. Myself included. That being said; now that I am older and my wallet is fat.... Nothing has changed. Yes I now sit on a $200 chair and it is nicer in that it has a high back and adjustable arms but not necessary because gamers SIT LEANING FORWARD!. Therefore nothing other than a comfy ass pad really matters.
Adjustable chairs are stupid. Just offer chairs in three different sizes. Small, medium and large. Simple solution that is not expensive. The only reason to have an adjustable chair is if you don't know the size of the person who will sit in it such as for office or public use. A chair you buy with your own money you can choose to buy small, medium, large. Simple. But they probably make more money selling you an adjustable chair. Some companies may not even make all three sizes, but between all the chair companies you should be able to find one your size.
$1000 chair just because it has movable armrests, buy £26 desk armrests and your done ! or better go for Herman miller embody chair if you really want comfort, it's still 1k too tho :))
So uh.....don't buy a 1k chair for its arm rests..........but then buy the embody (a 1k chair)? I think it's not soo much about the arm rests, it's more about the whole chair. I've never heard someone say that it wasn't a dream to sit in a gesture chair. Unless they were like 6'6. The gesture is somewhat better for average to shorter people, primarily because of back length differences. 6'6 is not by any means average. On top of that it's built like a tank. Solid, smooth transitions, no creaking or squeaking. A chair is more than a soft bottom. If I wanted just a soft seat, I could literally buy one of those 10 inch thick foam beds for $600 and turn it into 10 chair seats and backings, but they won't have the same ergonomics in the long run. Also the embody is just hideous.
C North ik, but when I went on their site (If it was like this dunno can't remember) without armrests was like 400-600 can't remember (will look when I got time) and just by adding those arm rests it went up to 1k. I have a mesh chair for 150 gbp and it's really good.
I absolutely hate people who spend so much on a chair. I've had the same $80, heavy office chair for just over 3 years. And there's not a rip, scratch, or blemish on it. The height adjustment still works great, and it's still very comfortable. You don't need to spend the price of a high-end GPU for a chair.
i love how you guys barely touched the "gaming chair" gave it 10 seconds ahahaha. these "gaming" chairs are fucking stupid and no one will call these companies out on it. over priced garbage. dx racers sell for up to 760 dollars here in canada. at that price you are looking at some of the best chairs available on the market. for 760 dollars i can walk into a car dealership and buy a real replacement seat for a car and just attach it to an old computer chair base
That expert is somewhat stuck in the nineties as far as the "desk setup" goes: 90-degree angles and pulling the keyboard closer to the desk's edge... uh oh, seriously? I get the point that dynamic sitting (that's the thing where you unlock the tilt and let your body find the best position) might not be a gamer thing but that "setup" is bad for your circulation, your neckline and your wrists. If you need to have one fixed posture, open up a bit more to about 135 degree angle at both hip and knee to improve circulation. Also, that thing in the video can't be called a desk - a real desk has some type of height adjustability and enough depth to allow you to rest your wrists/elbows on the desk top.
What? Fallout is overdone? We barely scratched the surface. New Vegas was a bit of a disappointment, a rehash of F3 introducing nothing really new, but with the new engine, I hope they can refine the gameplay and avoid the immersion-breaking cRPG-esque moments I had in F3, which really felt like a limitation of the engine.
I have to say the camera work was like really annoying when you were talking to the ergonomist, like there was only one camera that was held in place and one more shaking around looking at her. Honestly it was so disorienting and noticeable I had to comment
Pc gamers latest jounalism and stuff is a bit saddening... The maximum chairs come with an integrated lumbar support now, and are a HELLUVA lot cheaper than the crazy priced chairs you talked at length about... I spent 300£ on the commander bwe from need for seat and it's the best chair I've ever had. Go on casuals. Spend 1k on a chair cause some ergo nerd told you to.
Stephen Padgett, so you spent close to 500$ on a chair and you are complaining that they say you should start at around 300$? What? And talking at length about a 1000$ chair is probably what you will end up doing since it'll have more features than the 100$ chair and there needing to be a justification for it.
There didn't seem to be anything definitive coming out of the chair segment. Different features about different chairs were talked about and that was about it. No real information was gained.
The conversation started with the price range of 300 to $400 and before you know it were talking about $1000 chair. No pros or cons list or common misconceptions given.

(for a chair) "expect to spend $300 to $400" the milk crate at the grocery store is sounding more appetizing by the minute
You just reminded me that I literally started with one of these milk crates when I had my first computer (which was very weak), now I'm sitting on my Pulselabz Guardian and my Gaming setup is great.

Very useful video! Thank you guys for looking at this!
If i Can spend $200 on a keyboard i might spend $300 on a chair
if i spend 5$ on a keyboard and mouse combp i think i dont need a chair the carpet is just great

It is seriously insane what some of these people are asking for a chair.
Why is it so unreasonable to spend 150 dollars and get a decent chair? ffs
I know right fucking 300 for a chair gtfo 100 bucks is enough for an awesome chair.
+Wong Not 300 bucks tho

Woah, chairs.
You guys don't really go too much into the dxracer style chairs... Are they any good? Will they support my back?
DXRacer chairs are tacky garbage. They're ugly gimmicks made to appeal to 20 somethings who are fooled by the ~$300 price tag.
Description says Far Cry 4 instead of Fallout 4.
Thanks for the catch! Just fixed it.

Where can i buy the gesture in the uk? The only places i can find are suppliers to companies not individuals or 2nd hand.
is that power armour in the background like a cardboard cutout because I really can't tell?
I know you were going to do a europe based one, I was wondering if you could do an Australian version as well, please :)
Why didn't you compare any of the "EU chairs"? For example the Ikea Markus should be available also in US.

What about the herman Miller embody?

Last time I saw Tom was in a documentary about quidditch - seeing him here seems really weird to me now! XD
A World of Difference
this is great
jesus what monitor is that...i want one.
should i put my elbow on the side of chair srry for my english
anybody have any insight on why my wrists start to hurt after some time on the pc? would it be a chair thing or maybe desk?
Mustard Tiger do you rest your elbows or forearms on the arm rests? do you have a keyboard wrist rest? are you typing with your wrists on the desk? is your desk up too high, or too low?
8:50 and good .. play the game with your mouse next to your keyboard : D
Are dx racers comfortable?
Instant subscribe!!!
Hahaha thanks for the steam key, can only one person use it or can several?
Hahaha thanks, it's the kind of thing you only get if you happened to look at youtube at that time.
What was it?
Apotheon
I was surprised I got it because it said 7 people had already viewed the video.

I don't mind spending some money on a comfortable chair, but It seems like there aren't many good options under $500 which is disappointing.

all of a sudden NOW my chair feels uncomfortable..
seriously who took that steam key and what game was it????
did not learn much here!!
Cool vid!

What was that thousand dollar chair called?

"Steelcase Gesture" I believe.
Rip off
I've got a folding chair and it rules.
How am i soposed to sit down when trying to go tryhard

can I just say, if our bodies can't tolerate the kind of "contact stress" you get from sitting on a hard surface, we as a species are royally fucked.

3-400$??? He said chair not regal throne! O_O
I could pick up Zyzz's chair, we're shaped basically the same
Why would I spend $400 for something to sit my ass on?

to be a pro body builder in the future with a perfect 10 out of 10 ass

Why do I feel as though Hal and Oats is going to sue the people who made this video...
i use a recliner
i love how you guys barely touched the "gaming chair" gave it 10 seconds ahahaha. these "gaming" chairs are fucking stupid and no one will call these companies out on it. over priced garbage. dx racers sell for up to 760 dollars here in canada. at that price you are looking at some of the best chairs available on the market. for 760 dollars i can walk into a car dealership and buy a real replacement seat for a car and just attach it to an old computer chair base
Anyone? What does that key redeem? 3:23
+siloPIRATE Probably nothing right now considering that this was posted more than a year ago.
so don't buy a chair at a garage sale for a dollar? yes, I've done that...
6:06 :0 She nearly said iPhone.
Go home iSheep, crapple sucks.
Also, that thing in the video can't be called a desk - a real desk has some type of height adjustability and enough depth to allow you to rest your wrists/elbows on the desk top.
couch + usb extension cords = profit
actually that might not work for ppl who dont use a trackball mouse like me
awesome video
you can tell Melissa definitely isn't a gamer...
Angelo Merte "Posted by PCGamer" soo uh usually someone with gaming experience is on the show???
That's sexism.
The only difference between gaming chairs and normal good office chairs is the premium you pay for the gaming title and the colours.
D-did she say she was a gamer?
Im sorry, i just don't know english. And racist was the only word that came to my mind.
But can you do this?!
I have to say the camera work was like really annoying when you were talking to the ergonomist, like there was only one camera that was held in place and one more shaking around looking at her. Honestly it was so disorienting and noticeable I had to comment
plastic cafe chair from ikea... xD
Sounds like common knowledge to me and nothing you need an "expert" for ^^
kill the music bed over the q&a, dont need to fluff the conversation
Pc gamers latest jounalism and stuff is a bit saddening...
The maximum chairs come with an integrated lumbar support now, and are a HELLUVA lot cheaper than the crazy priced chairs you talked at length about... I spent 300£ on the commander bwe from need for seat and it's the best chair I've ever had.
Go on casuals. Spend 1k on a chair cause some ergo nerd told you to.
indeed, bought a chair off ebay for under 100 looks pretty comfy to me :P
Stephen Padgett, so you spent close to 500$ on a chair and you are complaining that they say you should start at around 300$? What?
And talking at length about a 1000$ chair is probably what you will end up doing since it'll have more features than the 100$ chair and there needing to be a justification for it.
