    Small note on the Lewis, later in the war it had a 97 round capacity thus fewer changes.

  • @SirKittalot
    @SirKittalot 7 лет назад +11

    The aircraft-mounted version of the Lewis Gun usually was equipped with a larger 97-round pan magazine, as opposed to the infantry version with the barrel shroud and the 47-round magazine.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  7 лет назад +6

      On some aircraft but not all, The problem with the 97 round pan was it was larger and harder to handle. This means that it takes up much more space in a small cockpit and it was much harder for a pilot to change while also flying the aircraft. This is why the standard 47 round pan was used in the DH.2.

    • @SirKittalot
      @SirKittalot 7 лет назад +7

      But even the in-game model is a 97-round magazine. Had it been a 47-round type it would have been much flatter. I haven't counted how many shots can be fired by the DH.2 from a single magazine, but it seems to be a lot more than 47. The magazine also has a fabric handle on-top for easy manipulation while wearing flying gloves, a feature that was not present on the 47-round model. This feature was initially added by a British pilot, Lanoe Hawker, who first created the 97-round magazine by combining two standard 47-round magazines. Later this was standardised by the manufacturers when the 97-round magazine became official. This means that the 97-round magazine would actually have been easier to handle than the 47-round one, a theory that is supported by the fact that the 97-round magazine was invented by a British pilot who had to use the Lewis Gun. Had pilots preferred the smaller magazine, it is likely that the Brits would not have made the larger one the standard aircraft armament. Finally, the magazine-retention hub had to be extended on the Lewis Mk II for it to take the larger magazine, which as far as I have found out made the 47-round magazine incompatible.

    • @sugarnads
      @sugarnads 5 лет назад

      MagzTV based on the on screen view thats a 97 round drum. The cooling system was also deleted on the air version.

    • @NefariousKoel
      @NefariousKoel 7 лет назад +5

      Correct. The Germans studied a downed plane that had it, realizing the guy had been rather successful & then discovering that was why. So they decided to go to the next level.

    There was another problem with Gnome engines, although this mostly applied to later models which DID have a throttle of sorts: they had a frighteningly high tendency to catch fire when opening up the throttle, which was because, rather than restricting the fuel flow like a normal throttle, the throttle on later Gnome rotary engines worked by disengaging and reengaging individual pistons, which allowed fuel to build up in them at lower engine settings, so when they were reengaged...

    I've seen pictures of DH.2's with racks outside of the cockpit (2 each side) so they could carry 4 additional Lewis drums. The DH.2 was also better than the Eindecker because it was one of the first WWI aircraft to have ailerons for roll control in place of the much less efficient wing warping.

    The magazines used by aircraft Lewis Guns were of a higher capacity than the standard infantry ones, up to 97 rnds. I think the aircraft Lewis guns also removed the barrel shroud

    • @shocktrooper2622
      @shocktrooper2622 7 лет назад

      They removed the Barrel Jacket, mainly because you had air cooling that didn't require the Air cooling jacket

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  7 лет назад +1

      Some did but not all and not the one in the DH.2
      The problem with the 97 round drums is that they are twice the size and twice the weight. In the DH.2 the Lewis is right in front of the pilot, the 97 round drum actually prevented the pilot from moving easily while also being quite difficult to change while flying the aircraft so the standard 47 round infantry drum was used in instead.

    Mags, a little help if u will please. I play RoF a lot and love the career mode, but when im on combat patrols and find observation or bomber aircraft. I usually leave them alone. Im terrified of its gunners. Can u please make a video or just explain in the comments on how to take down a plane with gunners?

    • @b212hp
      @b212hp 7 лет назад +1

      Those observation planes should be your primary target. They are there to find targets for the artillery and to map your army's trenches. I haven't played RoF yet, but as a guess hitting them from below would afford you the best protection. A head on pass at, or slightly below, their altitude would also protect you from the gunner. Good luck!

    • @thenoobinator3508
      @thenoobinator3508 7 лет назад +2

      tKestrel a few tips:
      -dont attack from the rear (it gives the gunner to much time to fire and you are flying in a straight line)
      -use high speed diving attacks
      -minimize the amount of time your opponent has to fire on you
      -Always aim for the center of the plane (youll hit the crew or engine)
      -Exploit enemy gunner's blind spots

    That was a surprising amount of fun and information to watch for me. Not that big on WW1 aviation, so yeah, thanks for it. Enjoyed it. One question, I guess you flew with headtracking, right? Bet that makes lining up a shot not all too easy, since the sight picture tends to wobble all over the place.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  7 лет назад

      indeed, you have to follow the tracers a bit and hold your head to line up the shots when shooting. Makes it hitting the target a little bit more of a challenge but it pays back with the ability to look past the rear of the aircraft or around the wings to see who is trying to kill you.

    No throttel? No wonder so many pilots died.

      darkblood626 funny thing the Eindecker also lacked any form of throttle control. I have made the mistake in RoF several times with cutting the engine and waiting too long to start it up and having to emergency land. Not the best thing to do when kn the middle of a fight

      It's a thing with rotary engine designs If i'm correct?

    • @tkestrel2100
      @tkestrel2100 7 лет назад

      Super Étendard im not sure about that. Maybe really early rotary engines but other ww1 aircraft eith rotary engines did have a throttle. It could have just been because of such an early design and the demand forced them to rush the design but thats just a guess

    How do you get your AIs to behave like that bc when I play rise of flight and I fight bots all they do is turn in a circle the whole making the dogfight boring and uneventful

      Turn the difficulty off low, I play on only the highest or second highest difficulties.

      MagzTV also when I plugged in my joystick and got in game my plane just freaked out.It just went into a spin with out me doing anything I have tried every thing it's like my sensitivity is at 10000

    DH2's speed and turning rate are worse than that of much bigger and heavier F.E.2b, also pusher...

      It makes sense when you consider the disgusting amounts of drag that the tail assembly adds. Having all those tubes and wires facing the wind will hold a plane back pretty severely.

    What are the chances of pilots survival on those crashes? They look rather soft, maybe even softer then a car crash

    Who needs a throttle, eh? They are for losers. The DH2 was also very cold to fly, but the engine did provide a bit of protection for the pilot. Another reason for the French engine that that the French produced more aircraft engines during WW1 than either Britain or Germany.

      YOu would be amazed how many WWI aircraft had no throttle control, was a crazy time for aviation.

    I really prefer RoF business model to lets say BoS/BoM or war thunder. Would love to see expansions for it at least up to Korea era jets. No grind for vehicles and the modules to unlock are really extras and not necessary equipment. Also instead of having so many vehicles, the different modules we could install would be what would give the version of the plane, lets say you start with a spitfire mkIa and as you install/uninstall modules you could building all other spitfires. Just a thought.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  7 лет назад +4

      RoF is made by the same people that are making BoS/BoM/BoK and uses a very similar business model. All the grind that was in the original release of the IL-2 series has been removed. It's now just buy the expansions that you want and go. Unlike RoF however each aircraft comes with all of it's upgrades so no need to buy them extra.
      Personally I would hate to see them develop outside of the time frame they are aimed at.
      Your module idea also wouldn't work, there are a hell of a lot of difference between each spitfire model regardless of how similar they look and it's the same story with pretty much every aircraft series.

    • @eloipreto
      @eloipreto 7 лет назад

      MagzTV I know they are the same people, what I meant was that I would like to see everything in one title, for example make the BoS, BoM and BoK be expansions for RoF, kind of like DCS where you have all different games inside one. Regarding the different modules/versions of planes I probably didn't explain it well, if we would compare it with the WT tech trees it would be more of a estetic difference, it could still have all the different flight models for different versions and all but the way they would be presented would be like instead of the mods that we have in WT to unlock we would have the different versions for each plane, making for a much cleaner tech tree and unlockables for planes that make sense to exist instead of what we have there. In the end maybe its me going back to an old vídeo of yours when you showed the mouse aim in il2 saying that it could be the competition WT needed. Btw, love the editing of your vídeos and you make me watch games that I'm not able to play, example cold waters, its like I'm watching a movie. Good stuff and thanks for your work.

      BoS/BoM/BoK are also part of the same game, pretty much like DCS. It's just a single game and your account gets cleared to use the content you have bought. You just buy one, download everything, and then you can use more if you buy the content expansions. You can have all the planes from all the expansions as AI, fly in the servers with all the maps and all the people flying all the planes around you (as long as they are available in the mission). You can even fly in MP server missions that have maps from expansions you don't own.

      Super Étendard now that is something I didn't knew, I only bought CoD and stopped there because it was already more than my computer could handle. Good to ear that and I'll defenetly pick those out when I get the hardware for it (full of il2 1946 nostalgia).
