6:28 I think that’s half the issue. But you must remember. The super soldier serum can make anyone superhuman, no matter their physical condition. Erkstein isn’t worried if the candidate can survive the process, he’s worried who he will be giving super powers too.
hell, the literal first person he used the serum on was the fucking Red Skull, a nazi so evil he felt the nazis were too weak and soft to bother with anymore and he wanted to make his own nazi group, with blackjack and hookers
That's also one of the reasons most of the other "super soldiers" in the Marvel comics aren't as good as Cap. Yeah, sometimes the formulas weren't as good, or as concentrated and whatnot. But at the end of the day... They're not Steve Rogers.
@@mrmxypltkproblem was that process and formula was lost, so new formulas actually has been driving the new recipients insane. Also, having Serum was not a condition to becoming Captain America. I'd heard that its an ongoing bit of national self-recrimination to focus on ww2... y'all gotta let that go for real instead of acting like you're all Isildur's legacy.
The Super Soldier Serum they used on Captain America, gave him peak human physiology, and thanks to the Super Soldier Serum, it actually infused itself with his biology so his body continues to generate it, even if he lives an unhealthy life he would still look like he does
he kinda already did. During Avengers Age of Ultron in the party scene Steve is hanging out with some old veterans from the war adn Thor kindly shared his drop of alcohol mix (not sure if its HIS special one but probably as good for Norse god) that he warned van knock out mortal man. Needless to say Steve shrug that like it was nothing, probably the best alcohol he had since then
I don't remember how long ago it was, but there was a Marvel/DC crossover comic where the villains from both franchises were discussing teaming up. When the Joker learned that the Red Skull was a N*zi, not only did he refuse to team up, but the Joker was ready to throw down on the spot because, "I may be a violent psychopath, but I'm an AMERICAN violent psychopath." Even villains have standards.😂
The movie The Rocketeer has a similar moment when Eddie Valentine and his gang find out they were working for a German spy and Eddie has the line of: "I may not make a honest buck, but I'm 100% American."
This was actually a historical reference. When a CIA spokesperson testified before Congress on Saddam Hussein’s violence toward civilians (I think in the 198-81 war with Iran), he said “He may be a murdering bastard, but he’s _our_ murdering bastard!”
2 of my favourite scenes between Cap and Red Skull "I am the superior man, I embrace it proudly without fear!" "Then why are you running?" and "What makes you so special?" "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn."
I think part of what makes Captain America such a delightful film is the fact that it's so old-fashioned in terms of its themes. In an age where cynicism and negativity is the default, Captain America represents a shining beacon of optimism, a reminder that we were once good and can be good again. We just need to be willing to stand up to bullies, no matter where they're from.
The whole "touring" scene is a masterpiece. He's wearing his original (goofy) outfit and recreating the iconic scene from the cover of issue #1 where he's punching Hitler in the face. (Which was pretty provocative when the US was still on the fence about joining the war.) And to top it all off, it perfectly explains how his charisma changes after the serum. He learns to perform and give heroic speeches *in universe*.
What makes Steve special isn't the Super Soldier serum, a lot of people get that. It's his character and that even if the US itself doesn't live up to its core values, he will. I love how this and future movies portray that perfectly.
9:31 even more to the point is that Dr. Erskine’s accent is more Austrian than German (he sounds like Donald Duck’s non-billionaire uncle Professor von Drake), which means that he talks like Funny Mustache Man. Fortunately the Austrians have been able to repair their reputation post-war, so that now their most famous native is Arnold Schwarzenegger.
And in some stories, they were the ones who saved Magneto from a concentration camp. Blade also lead a version of the Howling Commandos, one that had supernatural characters in its roster.
"So what happened to Red Skull? He disappeared with the Tesseract, right?" "Oo-oh. You'll see ;)" "Oh boy. I'm so excited :)" "In about 7 years from now." "What?"
I'm sure someone may have mentioned it already, but I love the acknowledgment of the original Captain America costume, which was used for his "performance" look. Also, beer.
the 1/1 ratio of Alicia having a favorite character, and that character meeting an unfortunate end has been consistent since she started reactions. also BEER! ~
I’ll say this: There are a lot of characters that people call “Marvel’s Superman,” like Sentry or Hyperion. But I firmly believe that Captain America is Marvel’s Superman, not because of his powers, but because their ideals and morals line up so well.
It’s the Ahnenerbe (the Nazi section looking for mystical historical artifacts) stuff. This was actually Himmler’s baby (Hitler cared less and had much bigger fish to fry) but everyone says “Hitler” for the name recognition.
This movie's director also directed a very fun 90's movie The Rocketeer, which is very similar in plot to this movie. Both are fun period pieces really.
yeah, Joe Dante was just such a perfect choice to direct this one. he just absolutely knows how to nail that adventurous big hero vibe that Cap needed.
This movie is such a comfort movie for me. I can turn it on and always feel good. Dr Erskien’s line about the weak man knowing compassion really drove me when I was young to being a better person.
I saw this in theaters when I was 11 When Steve jumped on the grenade, and then after seeing him in the suit for the first time Captain America became my third favorite superhero next to Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man
One of my favorite fan theories that I've read about this film is that at the end, when Steve wakes up in SHIELD's 1940's recovery room, he actually notices something's off because the agent who greets him is wearing a style of bra that was invented until well after he was frozen. But, Steve's too polite to point out that he knows something's off because a woman's chest looks weird to him, so he points out the baseball game on the "radio" instead. I don't think that was the intent of the scene, but it's a theory that's stuck in my head for years. And it always amuses me to think about Steve having an existential crisis over a bra, but being too polite to call her out on it.
when Chris Evans stepped out of the machine and Hayley Atwell reached for him and stopped herself that wasnt planned. that was her instincts and she suppressed them. they just left that part in lmao.
Steve Rogers/Captain America’s super power isn’t the strength, shield, or his durability, it’s the fact he’s a good person with the will to stay good no matter what happens.
22:10 Those are the Howling Commandos, all of whom possess superhuman physical abilities in the comics. However, some members are missing, such as the original Human Torch (who makes a cameo at the Stark Expo), Namor the Sub-Mariner, and finally James Howlett, aka Wolverine.
No, the comic WW2 _Howling Commandos_ was just relatively normal soldiers like Nick Fury Sr. and Dum Dum Dugan. The WW2 super team with Cap, Namor, and Jim Hammond/Human Torch was _The Invaders._ And Logan wasn’t affiliated with either in the comics apparently.
Black Widow in comics is actually similar to Captain America as they were both given the serum and older than they look, the films however ignored this part of her origin.
WHAT? They ignored the reason she’s able to keep up with other enhanced people? That’s some shit, because the only people she can do any real damage to in the MCU is regular Humans.
Aye, same with the winter soldier. In the movies he did get a serum but they really are vague about it and just show his arm but it is beyond just the arm. MCU kinda ignores the fact that a lot of the super heroes are from science and serums, from scientists all trying to recreate Captain America in their own way. Hulk was a failed gamma serum test Winter solider was the Russian version Same with black widow.
Wrong. Super soldier serum is super unique, but does not turn injected person eternally young. He grows old normally. Black Widow, Winter Soldier and Nick Fury Sr(the ginger white badass) were given different serum, designed to keep in peak human condition and prevent aging, making them essentially immortal. Still not super powered though.
@@Karthig1987Bucky was child soldier who lied about his age to get into military and was assigned to Cap as sidekick. There was only 1 successful serum before Erskin was assassinated. Bucky was just a guy. Then, when Bucky and Cap were trying to disarm missile, Bucky was less fortunate than Cap and got picked up by Soviets, who gave him the serum after brainwashing and training him. At least that's how comics go.

If you want more of the Peggy & Howard show, definitely check out the Peggy Carter series that ran for a couple seasons--it picks up shortly after the end of WWII, and deals with, in part, how those two characters move on in a post-Steve world.
Steve Rogers falling on that fake grenade is a defining moment showing the audience what his character is all about. One of my favorite scenes in the MCU and makes me want to crack open a beer.
This is one of my favorite MCU movies to date. Also fun fact: I believe that when Steve got the super soldier serum and Peggy went to go touch his chest but stopped herself, I believe Hayley Atwell did it on accident but they left it in
I still maintain that the most impressive special effects work Marvel has ever pulled off is making Chris Evans look like he isn't the buffest man in the room for the first 30 minutes. Also fun fact: that moment at 12:43 was not scripted. That was Hayley Atwell's live reaction to suddenly standing about a foot away from shirtless Chris Evans.

The effects of making Chris Evans looks small, very skinny and weak looking really hold up even today. The first time I saw this, I thought they had just gotten two different actors. My mind was blown learning they were the same person!
If you'd looked closely, the comic book cover with Cap punching Hitler in the face was the actual cover of the first Captain America comic book cover. It came out a few months before america entered the war, and when the creators got death threats from the big pro nazi group in the US, the mayor of NY personally told them "Don't worry, we'll make sure you're safe." (He was a fan.) Thing is, the original comics actually ran a few years after the war, shifting Cap to a more Jingoistic red scare "Stop the commies" setup that the readership didn't feel so the book was canceled. Then when Cap was brought back into the avengers, they created the retcon that he was frozen before the end of WW2, and just ignored the whole "commie smasher" era. Though that version of Cap was eventually given an actual backstory as someone who was so much of a Captain America fanboy that he had plastic surgery to look exactly like him, and after finding a source of Super Soldier serum, took it, did the whole Commie Smasher arc, then got put in suspended animation by the government when his bootleg serum started affecting his mind. He periodically gets brought back when writers want to do a dark reflection story, often getting put in charge with expy's of the KKK that cap has to fight.
There were actually three characters who were used to explain Steve’s stories from after he got frozen in ice, the one you mentioned William Burnside was the only one to take a recreated serum based on old notes from Erskine, missing the key part of the process, causing him to lose his grip on reality alongside his stupid Bucky stand-in, as such Burnside Cap was a racist jingoistic super cop attacking people for being ‘anti American/commies’ before being awakened years later to be part of, and lead various far right hate groups committing acts of domestic terrorism.

Cap respects dp cuz he knows his heart is in the right place
It's understated a lot, but that last scene where Cap sees through the fake recovery room in an instant shows that he's not just physical. Captain America is brilliant, able to grasp a situation and act on it no matter how strange it may get.
Cap is my 2nd favorite hero. Cause he stands for being good and typically what's best for the people of the country and not necessarily the government. The original Civil War comic was so jarring cause it was Steve vs USA government which sounds backwards but he disagreed with what the country was trying to do.
@2ndlegend125 what's funny is i agree. I love Cap for his positive attitude and how he will always do the right thing... and yet I can't stand Superman but that's more cause he's just so overpowered.

One of the best things Germany got is an acknowledgement of our past. The values of my grandfathers who fought against the Soviets are very different from mine and thats good. And it is good that we acknowledge our past and try to prevent it from ever happening again. America has still work to do with the whole "killing almost all the natives". Same for all the ex-colonial powers. I as a German believe it is better to not love your country and idolize it and hang flags in our Gardens. They're far from admitting a single historical failure because they're still riding the wave of their hatred. They're still racist to the core, they defend their invasions and interventions (the way they defend the use of the nuclear bombs even when theres multiple sided proof it was an unnecessary barbaric attack is sickening). They can't admit any mistake because they'd be forced to acknowledge they're still the same. Look at how they're paying for the Palestinian genocide.
There was one powerless human who took up Cap's place when OG got missing in ice. He deserves every bit of the title, winning respect of Revengers and thankfully he was never injected with flawed formula to become a raving psycho like the rest.
@@mrmxypltk The closest anyone has ever replicated the Super Soldier Serum in the comics was probably Norman Osborn with the Green Goblin Serum. Its effects are so potent, anyone injected by it can stand toe to toe with the likes of Spider-Man... sadly, the side effects include driving the user absolutely batshit insane, lol...

The Super Soldier Serum they used on Captain America, gave him peak human physiology, and thanks to the Super Soldier Serum, it actually infused itself with his biology so his body continues to generate it, even if he lives an unhealthy life he would still look like he does

That "I had a date"-line has to be one of the best endings of all Marvel movies. So raw...
I don't remember how long ago it was, but there was a Marvel/DC crossover comic where the villains from both franchises were discussing teaming up. When the Joker learned that the Red Skull was a N*zi, not only did he refuse to team up, but the Joker was ready to throw down on the spot because, "I may be a violent psychopath, but I'm an AMERICAN violent psychopath."
Even villains have standards.😂
It was the Batman/Captain America crossover comic in 1997. An oldie but goldie with that scene you pointed out being one of many reasons why.
There's something deep in the soul of good Americans that makes us go

"I am the superior man, I embrace it proudly without fear!"
"Then why are you running?"
and
"What makes you so special?"
"I'm just a kid from Brooklyn."
Puts YET ANOTHER checkmark by Alicia saying, "This character is my favorite!" and then... WELP... looks like we have a new running gag...
Awww 🥺
Which is not a conservative value, since they only _truly_ care about fudging over the working class and minority groups.
The whole "touring" scene is a masterpiece. He's wearing his original (goofy) outfit and recreating the iconic scene from the cover of issue #1 where he's punching Hitler in the face. (Which was pretty provocative when the US was still on the fence about joining the war.)
And to top it all off, it perfectly explains how his charisma changes after the serum. He learns to perform and give heroic speeches *in universe*.
"Is the shield magic, well no, but actually yes, but actually no.
beer
What makes Steve special isn't the Super Soldier serum, a lot of people get that. It's his character and that even if the US itself doesn't live up to its core values, he will. I love how this and future movies portray that perfectly.
I think my favorite thing about Cap is that he represents America as it should be, not necessarily as it always is
Well, no cuz captain america exists...so it does'nt represent America as it should be
"Your country appreciates your loyalty, Captain."
"I'm loyal to nothing, General, except the Dream."
"as it always is"? It has never been like that.
Captain America’s squad has a great name: The Howling Commandos, in the comics Wolverine was one, if I remember correctly
So was Nick Fury Sr.

I’ll say this:
There are a lot of characters that people call “Marvel’s Superman,” like Sentry or Hyperion.
But I firmly believe that Captain America is Marvel’s Superman, not because of his powers, but because their ideals and morals line up so well.
I loved Captain America, it reminds me of Raiders of the Lost Arc, in a way
Thise damn nazis can't stop digging up those damn magic relics
Believe it or not, the quip about "searching for trinkets in the desert" acknowledges that franchise
Old school hero movie that was not about deconstruction of heros.
Hope she can react to that movie someday.
I love the Rocketeer!
yeah, Joe Dante was just such a perfect choice to direct this one. he just absolutely knows how to nail that adventurous big hero vibe that Cap needed.
This movie is such a comfort movie for me. I can turn it on and always feel good. Dr Erskien’s line about the weak man knowing compassion really drove me when I was young to being a better person.
I saw this in theaters when I was 11 When Steve jumped on the grenade, and then after seeing him in the suit for the first time Captain America became my third favorite superhero next to Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man
Any character as soon as Alicia calls them her favorite: "My time has come"
One of my favorite fan theories that I've read about this film is that at the end, when Steve wakes up in SHIELD's 1940's recovery room, he actually notices something's off because the agent who greets him is wearing a style of bra that was invented until well after he was frozen.
I WOULD try to point out that Scooter has a southern accent.
But 96% of the United States IS south of Canada, so...
PERSPECTIVE
Steve Rogers/Captain America’s super power isn’t the strength, shield, or his durability, it’s the fact he’s a good person with the will to stay good no matter what happens.
I can't wait for Captain America 2. I can't wait to listen to Alicia's nerdy rants about that masterpiece
The WW2 super team with Cap, Namor, and Jim Hammond/Human Torch was _The Invaders._
And Logan wasn’t affiliated with either in the comics apparently.
Hulk was a failed gamma serum test
Winter solider was the Russian version
Same with black widow.
I agree with black widow and Nick fury but wasn't Bucky also a super soldier?
@@Karthig1987Bucky was child soldier who lied about his age to get into military and was assigned to Cap as sidekick. There was only 1 successful serum before Erskin was assassinated. Bucky was just a guy. Then, when Bucky and Cap were trying to disarm missile, Bucky was less fortunate than Cap and got picked up by Soviets, who gave him the serum after brainwashing and training him.
At least that's how comics go.

@@johnking2740 Ah, apologies, I was attempting to pivot to the DnD character alignment.
Lawful Neutral here would mean that one would follow the letter of the rules, whether or not it results in good.
Neutral Good would mean that one prefers Good (as opposed to Evil) outcome, using any means necessary.
@@StorymasterQ I did understand the DnD connection, however the adding of 'neutral' to either good or evil would mean that they are neutral first and foremost with their inclination to either good or evil.

The effects of making Chris Evans looks small, very skinny and weak looking really hold up even today. The first time I saw this, I thought they had just gotten two different actors. My mind was blown learning they were the same person!
There actually are two actors it's just a head replacement on the smaller guy.
If you'd looked closely, the comic book cover with Cap punching Hitler in the face was the actual cover of the first Captain America comic book cover. It came out a few months before america entered the war, and when the creators got death threats from the big pro nazi group in the US, the mayor of NY personally told them "Don't worry, we'll make sure you're safe." (He was a fan.)
Thing is, the original comics actually ran a few years after the war, shifting Cap to a more Jingoistic red scare "Stop the commies" setup that the readership didn't feel so the book was canceled.
